Recent reads: Armed Insurrection by A. Neuberg

This is a great book to download and read if you would like to appear on an FBI watchlist. Earlier this year I was thinking of writing a fictional story about an insurrectionary communist group, and I read this in part as research for it (I swear).

It is in part a textbook and in part a manual, written under directives from the Soviet Union in the 20s, on how to organize workers' insurrections, how to form communist militias, revolutionary military strategy, and some of the theoretical...

Some new photo material

Just bought this huge German book consisting of an illustrated history of the German revolution. I want to make sure to have good photo material for my video so I got this in case it has some interesting photos that are otherwise hard to find online. Going to scan a lot of these for use in the video

Recent reads

I had the idea of occasionally posting about books that I've read relatively recently, as a way of staying active on Patreon, making recommendations and thereby hopefully also connecting to patrons. Please let me know if that's a worthwhile idea and if you'd be interested in posts like this.

This is The Roots of Romanticism by Isaiah Berlin. It was originally delivered as a lecture series (which you can actually listen to on YouTube) and later transcribed into a short book. I ...

Question about upcoming video

As you know, I'm working on a script about the German revolution (1918-19), and it's a big project that I feel very passionate about, and one that I think will make for a really interesting video, but there's something I'm wondering: should I make it into one long video or split it into a video series?

If I split it into several videos, I'll be able to include more details in each part, and you'd have to wait less for new content to come out, but my main concern is: would people be les...

Problems with my sound mixer

Started having trouble with my ProFX 6 Vr 3 sound mixer after traveling. Possibly got banged up on the plane? It seems to turn on fine and lights up, but isn't detected as a sound device by my computers, and the device manager gives an error message saying "This device cannot start (code 10)". Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

I emailed the company and hopefully they can help out. Otherwise I might end up having to buy a whole new mixer.

Researching the German revolution

Currently working on research for a video on the German revolution of 1918-19. This is such a fascinating and important topic that I really wanna do it right, so it's gonna be a big project. I hope you'll be as excited about it as I am.

I've been mainly drawing on 3 different books on the revolution so far, each from a different political vantage point:
Sebastian Haffner's Failure of a Revolution, perhaps the most moderate of the three, which emphasizes the lost possibility...

Audio has been recorded

Just finished recording the audio for the Schopenhauer-Hegel video.

For the occasion, I uploaded two new books to the Google drive: a Schopenhauer biography by David E. Cartwright and a Hegel biography by Terry Pinkard:

A movie list?

Another question I have regarding a future video: how would you feel about a video listing some of the best socialist/communist/leftist movies? I'm not sure if this is a good idea because it's so different from my usual format and maybe people would be too scared that I'm becoming Top Mojo. But on the other hand, politically conscious movies can be a great source of education, so it might be worthwhile?

Update

Just letting you know that I'm almost done with another script – on Schopenhauer's hatred of Hegel. It'll probably be a similar length to the last Nietzsche video. I hope you'll find it interesting.

P.S. If there are some essential philosophers/concepts/topics I haven't covered on my channel before that you think I should, tell me in the comments. (And of course, you're always free to message me in general any time you have a suggestion)

Thanks! Hope you're having a good weeke...

Video about the German revolution of 1918-19?

This is a question for the future: how interested would you be in a video that is really not about philosophy at all, but covers the German revolution of 1918-19? It's an extremely interesting, important, overlooked and tragic historical event that I think way too few people really know about, and I'd feel quite strongly about sharing it.

I'm already working on a script on Nietzsche, but asking about this for the future, because a historical video like this would take a lot of research ...

An update

Hey everyone, I hope you're doing well. I'm sorry that it's been taking me so long to get a new video done. The past months I've been trying to work on a script for the philosophy of freedom, but it hasn't been very successful. I'm struggling with executive dysfunction, and the topic is so general and abstract that organizing my ideas and working on it productively has been extremely difficult. Because, at least for now, this topic has been a dead end, I'm going to do a video on a different t...

Some notes for my "Killing Thatcher in Doom" video

Just uploaded the supplementary notes for my video on Doom and neoliberalism. It's really short as the video isn't very philosophically dense so there isn't as much to cover.

I also uploaded the book "Late Capitalism" by Ernest Mandel, and the essay "Atomism" by Charles Taylor on our google drive:

Hope you enjoy! I should have the supplementary notes for this video out tomorrow.

Audio finally fixed!

After a whole month of trying to record audio with bad results, getting frustrated trying to get it sound right, trying different recording spots and settings, buying a new pop filter and a mic shield, I finally got my audio to sound decent again. So, just so you know, that's the reason the video is late. I'm going to record the new audio now, and spend all my time editing, and then get right back to work doing my top 10 book video. Thank you for your patience!

Update

So I was planning to release a new (short) video on Deleuze and drum machines before Christmas, but then discovered that the audio I had recorded for it sounded really bad, and as I was away from home throughout the holidays I wasn't able to re-record it, and then started doubting whether the script itself is any good at all.

I attached the script to the post. I'd be really grateful if you read it and told me what you think - it's nothing special but is it good enough to make producing...

Additional poll

The video topic that won the last poll (philosophy of freedom) is the one I'd need the most time on, so given the results, which of these options would you prefer for me to work towards:

What should the next video be about?

Time for a new poll! I can't promise anything, but I'll try to release a new video before Christmas, as it would be a lot more difficult for me to record a new video during the holidays. Here are the options:

1) Old patrons will be familiar with this video idea as I've had it for a long time. Here I would use the movie Total Recall to discuss some postmodern ideas about memory as something prosthetic, and the relation between memory, authenticity and identity. I might also use Blade Ru...
