Just another day at the Department of Superhuman Affairs...

XENOBIOLOGY FILE 0069420

This is a followup report clarifying the recent reports of unusual cephalopod-like alien incursions into our material reality. Colloquially these creatures are often referred to as “tentacle monsters”. Though like “vegetables” and “fish” this is a wildly imprecise classification. Indeed while some tentacle monsters resemble octopi or squids [See Subject L008 Codename: H Squidward], others bear more in common with plant matter [See Subject 2324 Sap Sipper]. Others meanwhile have appendages that themselves resemble entire snakelike creatures fused into a gestalt hive-mind organism. [See Subject G612 Hydra and Subject J414 Orochi].

This specific example appears to be a creature with sophisticated muscle fibers and sensory nerves which facilitate both sensory functions and a form of physical communication. We enlisted the assistance of Metahuman Subject 8989 C-Hayden to examine the creature’s mind using her psionic abilities however results were inconclusive. The creature’s communication patterns and thought processes bear little resemblance to human cognition (we are still in the process of cross referencing available extraterrestrial linguistic data provided by MA’AT).

Agent Hayden was engaged with this entity for upwards of 17 hours during which she experienced numerous physical interactions and observed a variety of information-seeking behaviors from the subject. The creature would periodically emit a sweet-smelling fluid that, when unintentionally (and later intentionally) consumed by Agent Hayden, removed the need for meal breaks during the extended session, though chemical analysis of the nutrient fluid seems to include a significant amount of alien biomatter that, in contact with mammalian nerves and digestion seems to result in powerful hormonal effects, not limited to increased arousal and heightened mental acuity. The substance appears to be non-toxic and mildly addictive, further study is required.

And that's Round 8!! Beck scores a decisive victory over ActiRanger Pink! Unsurprisingly I ended up going a little crazy with this one. There's a lot of ways this could have played out, but I hope y'all enjoy this set!

Monsters of the Week

Some extra Actiranger doodles including some old ones featuring ideas for Monsters of the Week might be like! I think a lot of them are based on children's games etc. With a classic tokusatsu (Brat's Cradle and Hopscorch were fun twitter suggestions.)

Meanwhile here's a drawing of Boss King since I almost never get a chance to draw him. He came up when someone asked who my Tallest OC was and at first I thought it'd be Gray but in a previous comic it's clear that he's only a little bit taller than Buster Rook, and Boss King is definitely bigger than both of them.

And finally a little PInk / Pawnathan doodle which came out of someone asking if there's any character who I didn't expect to be popular. I figured people would like Pawnathan but he really got his own dedicated fanbase VERY immediately.

And that's Round 7! A narrow victory for Yellow in this one, but it looks like Sunshine Friend will come out on top of the Gloomy Friend! (Still a little bit of shadow tentacle play though.)

BECK
A fierce tomboy warrior at the heart of Rumble: After Dark, Beck was trained by their supervillain father to be a living weapon, but escaped after said villain's defeat and now Beck lives with SH0-T0, a refurbished experimental training robot, finding quiet work at a run-down local gym. Despite their better judgement, they both find themselves drawn into the underground fighting scene. Beck is a powerful and high-impact rush down character with a balanced array of approach options and high-damage combos. Beck's usually the type to leave opponent's breathless.

ACTIRANGER PINK
A wealthy heiress and sniping ace of the ActiRanger team. Her ActiRanger powers are centered on golf (The Sport of the Wind), allowing her astonishingly precise long-range shots and remarkable evasive abilities. Pink is cool and composed loner with a prickly personality. Fitting her personality, she doesn't like to let people get too close, (friend and foe alike) relying on powerful ranged attacks and even in melee she uses the exceptional reach of her golf clubs to keep fights at a favorable distance.

NOTE: Throughout the tournament when one side has a slight lead, the other side seems to have an advantage in the polling. This could lead to a somewhat dull final round so Round 7 and Round 8 will be voted on SIMULTANEOUSLY! You can find the other round by following this link.

NOAH
A mysterious student at Rival City University, Noah is a practitioner of shadow magic and has been seen investigating strange occurrences around the city. Noah is quiet, introverted, and sullen, with their literal Shadow as their closest friend. In combat Noah tends to let their shadow familiar do most of the fighting. The shadow has a wildly variable size and shape, and is able to mimic opponents to tease out their weaknesses. While Noah tends to remain stoic, the shadow expresses their excess emotions and subconscious instincts, both in battle and elsewhere.

ACTIRANGER YELLOW
The plucky and optimistic sunshine friend of the ActiRanger team. Yellow is bright, earnest, and a little bit mischevious. Her ActiRanger abilities are based on table-tennis (The sport of lightning) granting her super-speed and a ping pong ball-lightning projectile that she can ricochet off her opponents. Her fighting style relies on lightning fast speed and mix-ups to confuse and overwhelm her opponents with a relentless barrage of strikes. A side-effect of the ActiRanger powers is a heightened metabolism and increased energy levels leaving her often somewhat insatiable (in more ways than one.)

And Round 6 ends in another nail-biter! Pop Cap had a very strong early lead but slow and steady won the race with Blue securing another win for the ActiRangers!

Rumble vs Ranger R6: Pop Cap vs Blue

POP CAP
A syndicate assassin who traded her voice for evil mime powers. Pop Cap is a tricky and mischievous criminal who enjoys toying with her opponents. Though somewhat agile, she's not a particularly talented martial artist, relying instead on her mime powers and also this gun she found. In-game she features high burst damage and strong pressure, with her main weakness being her abysmal stamina. She has the lowest HP total of the entire Rumble After Dark cast.

ACTIRANGER BLUE
The steady and reliable Big Guy in the ActiRanger team. Blue is a kind, patient and gentle-natured Hockey-playing goliath. His ActiRanger abilities enhance his physical prowess even further and additionally grant him limited Ice Powers. His primary role is that of a Goalie, with appropriately strong defensive abilities, though his Glacier Check is a fast and powerful charge attack that can utterly demolish a cornered opponent.

That wraps up Round 5! Sophie took a solid early lead and Pawnathan slowly worked his way towards catching up over the course of the week. But at the end of the day, the Goat takes it home in a decisive victory, and she has apparently learned something about herself along the way...

SOPHIE
A nervous and self-conscious goat-demon maid who specializes in the sweet science of boxing. Sophie has served as Madison's bodyguard, maid, and sparring partner for the past several years. While she's somewhat clumsy in her day-to-day work, she is astonishingly talented in combat. Her fighting style is highly defensive, with elusive slips leading to precision strikes. She retains an orthodox boxing stance with an emphasis on peek-a-boo style counterpunching. (Though she has an unfortunate habit of apologizing whenever she lands a hit.)

PAWNATHAN
A nervous and self-conscious foot soldier / custodian who specializes in Trying Not to Die. Pawnathan has quit the villainous Gambit Gang to seek gainful employment doing odd jobs around town. Despite this, he still seems to find himself running into all kinds of trouble. Pawnathan's fighting style simple and unrefined, being one among many cannon fodder minions to be sacrificed en masse against the Actirangers. His body is crafted from alien technology granting him a number of modular features that he's not entirely sure how to use.

I'm not sure either of these characters knows how to top, so this will definitely be a learning experience for one of them!

Some of you may or may not have noticed that I quietly added Leona, Shaoxing and Sophie's ref sheets to the Rumble Character Profiles page. Probably should have had those in BEFORE starting the tournament but ah well.

Madison Rembrandt
A wealthy heiress, trained in a variety of martial arts by numerous bodyguards and assassins. Madison is a bold and free spirit who yearns for danger and excitement. Known in the underground arena as The Bloody Diamond, her fighting style is slippery, using graceful movements punctuated by brutal strikes. She's hot-blooded and yearns for excitement, often intentionally placing herself in harm's way, teasing and goading her opponents in pursuit of a more thrilling fight.

Rival Knight
Also known as Gray, a former ActiRanger, Rival Knight serves as a fearsome commander in the Gambit Gang. The evil robot space aliens have granted him numerous cybernetic modifications that enhance his combat prowess (among other things). These mixed with the remnants of his old ActiRanger powers to create a truly unmatched warrior. Rival Knight's fighting style involves fearsome, wide-ranging attacks and immense pressure. His Centaur form allows him to close gaps very suddenly where he can bring his armored and guard-breaking attacks to bear.

A special note! Madison and Gray have some shared history (along with their mutual friend, ActiRanger Pink). This will likely be her first time encountering him in his fully powered up form. Not sure of the canonicity of the whole tournament but still something to consider.

An incredibly close match but Helen managed to clutch it out in the battle of the doms.
Emphasis on battle, I couldn't help but add a quick action shot for the two of them.

HELEN REGAL
An office worker who spends her off-hours defending her title as the current Champion of the underground fighting arena. (We 're not supposed to talk about it.) Helen is a defensive zoner with the ability to generate clouds of acrid smoke during fights and punch with such force to generate shockwave projectiles. She's calm, collected, and rarely displays any emotion beyond stoic boredom. It's a little bit unclear what exactly is going on in her head at times, but her inherent charisma can often leave both her opponents and her coworkers rather flustered.

ACTIRANGER GREEN
The ActiRanger's second in command. Green plays Lacrosse and is a steady, sardonic wit in contrast to Red's earnest heroism. Green is all about control, capable of dishing out immense damage fast and without mercy. She sometimes spends her off-hours in self-indulgence, and while she has no interest in leadership, she's certainly able to take command when necessary. Her fighting style relies on Setplay, performing relentless combos and attack strings that force her opponent into lose-lose situations.

Both characters are known for their effortless dominance. And with the teams currently tied, 1-1, it's an open question as to which of them gets to come out on top.

The answer, of course, is up to you!
