[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 105: Settling Down

“Are you secretly a cultist?” Raiko asked Lenal bluntly the next morning. “You have to tell me, if you are. That’s… the rules? Yes, that sounds right.”

The elf hesitated, put on the spot. Who would expect a question like that after all?

Basically, are you secretly an assassin or what?

“N-no, Sage Raiko,” she answered nervously. “I would never—”

“Good enough for me. Don’t worry, you’re welcome here. Just… couldn’t help myself...

[Shrubley, the Monster Adventurer] Chapters 6 - 10

Chapter 6 - Say “Aloe” to my Little Friend

The adventurers stared in stunned silence as Jorn’s club was shattered by that toothpick of a sword. The monstrous shrub took a few steps back and squared up again as if he was human.

“That does it!” Konko yelled, pulling out a bottle of [Firesap]. She launched it at the creature, but it was so small and so nimble that it merely avoided the spreading pool of flames that licked across the road.

Frederick, however...

New Series: Shrubley, the Monster Adventurer!

Hey all, James here! We're back at it again with a fun new series featuring a lovable little magical shrub that some of you may remember seeing briefly toward the end of Beastborne Book 3 (hint: he was fighting some spooky skele bois).
This was initially intended to be a short story Sohmer and I wrote for fun, but we enjoyed it so much that it got out of hand and well, here we are!
We hope you enjoy it.

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 104: So a Guy with One Arm and No Hands Walks into a Bar ….

For the second time that day, Kale opened his eyes to realize he wasn’t dead. The pain from his many wounds was gone, and that surely seemed like a bad sign.

You didn’t just get better by lying there bleeding out.

Didn’t I do something?

The memory was fuzzy, but he clearly recalled one last act of defiance. He gripped the red commander’s ankle. He could have shaken him off.

Kale realized why a moment later when his brain caught up with cur...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 103: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

We said you would be vulnerable, and yet you persist in this folly!the Dagger screamed into Simon’s head.

He had no idea why he was doing this, but for once, he felt sure of himself. Sure of his standing. Sure of purpose. It was liberating.

And it didn’t hurt that he was doing something the Dagger didn’t want.

It was one little rebellious act to remind the magical artifact that he was in control here.

Simon poured on the speed, usin...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 102: Red Menace

Kale wiped the blood from his eyes and ducked under a slicing headsman’s axe aimed at his neck. He came up, double axes swinging in tandem at his assailant.

The axes bit into the man’s lacquered armor, their shimmering enhancements fading slightly as a single charge of [Slice] was used up.

The warrior’s axe fell from numb fingers. His eyes stared in shock at Kale’s grimacing and bloodied face. “I wish you better in the next life, brother,” Kale told him as...

[Beastborne: Voracious] (Book 5) Chapter 28

Tristal watched in complete astonishment as Hal used a Gold Founder’s Mark. He completely fixed the Kinslayer as if he was a fairy godmother granting a wish!

Is this the power of the Gold Mark? she found herself wondering.

Gold was the highest Founder Mark and rarely granted at that. The Shard was not known to be very giving.

Tristal had seen the extent of the woman’s injuries. Even the surface level that she understood was so far beyond he...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 101: Hobbit Hole

“It would be all too easy to drop Matt down a twenty-foot hole and leave him there to complain to nobody but himself,” Raiko muttered, guiding Kai through the mixed bamboo and hilly terrain encircling the Tree.

Lenal trailed after them at a distance, unsure of where she belonged. It seemed clear on her face that she was at least a little worried over a split in the Incarnates.

Earlier, Komachi had given Lenal her [Flamewool Cloak], so the elf was at least warm and...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 100: A Time for Rest

“I think it’d be best to wait until morning,” Sam said. “Just… in case. The Skyshard is largely undefended, and we have no idea what sort of things might be lurking out there where we can’t see. Our defenses—such as they are—are already spread pretty thin.”

“I should secure us shelter.” Raiko turned her attention to one of the hills peeking out between the bamboo. “It’s taken time for the energy I expend for Sculpting to recover.”

“That w...

[Voidknight Ascenion] Chapter 99: The Gifts of Copper

With Sam’s Max HP now at 1,515 and MP at 503, Sam felt comfortable enough to drop the remaining points into his Strength. His highest stat scraped an even loftier ceiling.

The familiar heady swell of his muscles expanding to accommodate his added Strength suddenly felt quite restrictive in his armor. For a moment, he worried whether or not he was trapped in his armor like a hermit crab in a too-small shell.

It passed a second later when Sam could feel the armor read...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 98: Clean Up Duty

The rest of the day passed uneventfully.

Once it became clear that Raiko’s Sacred Tree could alter the course that the Skyshards were following, with Sam’s maintaining its position above, Lenal had nothing but questions for the Sage.

Though there was an entire Skyshard to explore, nobody was really in the mood for it after a night full of fighting flying beasts.

Sam was the first one who went up to the supposed Field of cliffs. He didn’t want anybody watching him Break...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 97: Core values

“What do you mean by that?” Sam asked Lenal.

“Simply that, in the 32 Skyshards that I have come across, none of them possessed a so-called ‘Settlement Core’. None of them were able to do the things Sage Raiko’s Sacred Tree can do. It is, without a doubt, something that is connected to you as Incarnates.”

Raiko seemed to know something that she wasn’t saying. Nobody else appeared to notice but Sam.

“Couldn’t it just be something few people hav...

[Beastborne: Voracious] (Book 5) Chapter 27

I’m not actually considering this, am I?

Hal watched the two Kinslayers like a hawk, then snapped his attention back to Tristal. All the time he was being distracted by this, he could be using his Copper Kol’thil to finish the word he’d started. He didn’t know how long the free use would last, it felt temporary, like a surge similar to when his Monster Core went up in Rank.

Enough power to wield and use if you did so smartly and quickly, but all too s...

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 96: Chester Chompers the Third

Before Komachi could elaborate, Kai emerged from the screen of bamboo trees. “She is awake.”

Sam bent to scoop Komachi up, but Chompers had a different idea in mind. His dozens of paws sprouted once more, with a complicated execution of movements, he turned around and marched after the dumbfounded Kai.

“Should I be worried?” he asked as they made the trek toward the Tree.

“Nah, it’s a cutie,” Sam said. “Kind of like a dog, but a box. Komachi seem...

Updates on Updates!

So the poll came back with 58% wanting daily updates back, and 21% on either side for the other options with 25 respondents. Granted, that's 25/176 at the time so we also need to take that with a grain of salt and consider the silent majority.

That being said, Voidknight Ascension will be going back to daily chapter releases M-F until the end of the 2nd book. We'll assess where its popularity is at the end of each book and if it falls below a certain metric, we'll go back to bundling we...

Chapter Posting Poll

It's come to our attention that patreon's app doesn't remember your place on mobile, causing some annoyance for our readers that prefer to use the app.

Our goal is to make the patreon as easy to use as possible, while alleviating the extra work and time that the site now takes from us. Unfortunately, this is especially germane since the initial influx of patrons/readers for Voidknight has dwindled and the patreon itself has shrunk considerably.

Which, given the new update, l...

Posting Schedule Changes

This was touched on a bit in Ch25 of Beastborne, but I felt this was important enough to warrant its own post.

Some of you may have noticed that Patreon has decided to do an update to their site. This includes quite a substantial change to the creator section which, while totally manageable, is annoying as all hell. Patreon has never been that great at the best of times especially for authors due to the way their editor handles copy/pasting (ever see something "likethis"? That'...

[Beastborne: Voracious] (Book 5) Chapter 26

The large face that looked down at him was definitely Giel and yet… there was a vacant look in his eyes that Hal didn’t like one bit. He kept up his guard, but found it surprisingly hard to press any further into Giel’s massive sword.

The lamora who had sacrificed his life to save Mira and Elora from the Shoggoth beneath Murkmire… he should be dead. And yet Hal could sense the corruption in him. It wafted off the man before him like a miasma. Hal didn’t nee...

Author Note: Apologies for the wait, all the issues with patreon should (hopefully) be sorted now. They've played merry hell with my workflow so it won't be terribly out of place if a few chapters are up at a later time than usual but there shouldn't be any out-and-out interruptions from here on. We might make some alterations to posting to ease the burden since what once took about a minute per post now takes upwards of 3, and doing that 5 times a week adds up to less words written....

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 90: Big, Big Chicken

You could say a lot about Sam. He was brash, not exactly the smartest person, and his growing love for combat bordered on the concerning.

But what you couldn’t say about him was that he would stand around, paralyzed by fear or indecision, while a monster calmly descended as if it were a princess at a ball.

A princess preparing to slaughter them all.

As soon as he spotted the creature, he began moving to the side until he was out of the way. Music stop...

The chain launched itself toward the [Zuu’s] home with staggering speed, carrying Sam with it. For as slow as it was in reeling in, it more than made up for it in the launch.

Sam’s eyes watered from the blinding wind that threatened to peel him off the chain.

If he had thought about things beforehand, he would have used [Void: Smother] on the chain to nullify the Wind mana, but there was no time.

Author Note: Hey guys, sorry about the issue with this week's posts. I generally have this all set up a month at a time but it looks like Patreon's recent update borked everything up on top of making it take three times as long to post anything as a creator. [Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 85: Glyph Magic

Memories flowed through Raiko, joining the past to the present as she soaked in the recuperative waters of the Sacred Tree. It was reminiscent of wielding a Dungeon. Overwhelming, but more than manageable for an Incarnate like her.

Dream’s moniker was a bit of a misnomer. The purview of her domain extended far beyond the sleeping mind.

Magic and creation were both well within Dream’s scope. Though perhaps the strongest, and the worst, was the ambition.

[Voidknight Ascension] Chapter 84: Magical Mahjong

Back on Sil’mara, Sam sat beside the [Sourcestone] in all its glittering splendor. The [Dune Tile] had been pulled all the way into the Skyshard and was simply awaiting his approval before it was socketed.

Apparently, since his Skyshard was so hilariously small, he could socket—that is, place—any Tile in any direction.

In keeping with the practice of his Settlement Core being at the center of his Skyshard, Sam originally figured he would place the Tiles in a cro...

Sam hurried to the next Tile on his list.

The [Forest Tile] had been a close call, but the others were farther from the edge. And yet, Raiko’s Skyshard seemed to be speeding up its demolition efforts.

With the addition of all the Tiles he was harvesting, Sam bet that Raiko’s island would still be significantly larger than his, but no longer several orders of magnitude.

He knew she wouldn’t want anything to go to waste, not when his Skyshard could make exce...

After selecting [Source Chain], Sam stood at the edge of the island looking over the crumbling Skyshard below.

He didn’t need to be anywhere near the actual [Sourcestone] to use its abilities or even access any information about it. He had full access wherever he was on the Skyshard now that he had established a connection to the [Sourcestone].

Whether he would retain that connection when he was on another Skyshard was something he intended to find out. For now thou...
