Miscellaneous art

Another small painting share! First a texture/style/shading study (I finally figured out how to make metallic/glass objects), a lineart practice (trying to do shell shading and thick, neat linearts for the first time), a painting based on a photo I took on a walk (I'm no good at photography, so I simply had to paint the view afterwards to get the proper vibe of the view) and another thick lineart practice, and toying with shading.

The Cyclist

Picking colours for non-regular fox characters can be challenging sometimes, I opt for pink, orange and yellow a lot in order to contrast to Blue and Green. Also I have nothing against cyclist, but they can startle you with how vulnerable but fearless they are.

The Birds

I had to pace this one in the queue a bit, as I feared the punchline is too similar to the citrus cloud one, but this one was 100% based on a real situation. We stop to observe birds a lot, and paused to look at a crow that didn't seem like it was able to fly properly. It was almost adult-sized, but we were worried it was sick, wondering if it'll be okay out there all alone.

An Angel in Rose Gold - another re-draw

Decided to do another re-draw of an old pic - two years' worth of progress in digital art, from 2020 to 2022! While making the new version and comparing it to the old one, I started noticing all the little mistakes that I'd done with the first one, and immediately remembered the critique I received on it, and how frustrated I was with either not seeing the flaws, or not being able to figure out how to fix them. Progress in digital art

I found an old doodle from 11 months ago - a frog falling into a vat of acid, for some reason - and decided to try to re-draw it to see if I've made any progress with digital art. Though it's still also rough and not as finished as I'd have done it if I was trying to do serious work, I'd say the new one is better.

Dogsitting

Have you ever been in charge of looking after someone else's pet for the first time, and spotted that exact moment when they realise that you have no idea what you're doing? If you've ever told someone's cat or dog "stop complaining and help me" when I couldn't figure out where their kibble is stored or how to put their harness on, you know that feel.

I'm a big fan of people watching, eavesdropping, overhearing life and altogether observing people in public when they're not expecting to be oberved. I try not to be creepy about it.

Rusalka - a study in pattern detection and colour

I wanted to try something, where I started with a randomly rendered cloud of colours, see what it looks like - the orangish-red blotch in the middle looked like a head, so I decided to make it a face. Unfortunately, GIMP wouldn't offer me options on how to increase the image quality, so the creation animation is kind of a blurry mess.

I try to keep "no puns" as a rule in the comic-making, but considering that scientific terms in latin are fairly universal, and this conversation was too funny to pass up, I had to draw this.

This was going to just be another painting progress animation -exercise, but I ended up having too much fun with it and making it a whole painting!

 I've got the steps saved, though, and will make and share the animation of the creation of it later. I stayed up past my bedtime to finish this as it is!

TV shows

We have a different taste in shows and movies - there is overlap, but while I'm willing to watch something campy and no-budget and loathe excessively cynical and mean-spirited works, my boyfriend mainly prefers stuff with cool guns in it. He's not a snob about artistic value, looking cool is the key thing.

Painting process animation - phone

Another one! Making these is too fun, and I still haven't been able to mentally wrangle myself to going back to drawing Caesar. I'll figure out how to get over that road block eventually, but meanwhile, I'm painting still life and animating the results.

This is just a practice/doodle I decided to animate - saving a picture of each step as I went on, and then slapping them all together. I think the next time I'll do that I'll need to take more midway-pictures!

Shower temperatures

I'm a Hot Shower Enthusiast, while my boyfriend can't stand hot water. I don't understand how anyone can enjoy lukewarm showers, but then again he generates his own warmth.

Resting dadface

There's a certain quirk that older finnish men do, that I don't know for sure is just finnish men or universal with 50-something and up men in general, which is that their sense of humour consists of occasionally saying absurd things as a joke with a completely straight face and the same intonation as when they talk about serious stuff.

The Flu

I had already been feeling awful for like a week, figuring that this is just how I normally feel nowadays, when the buckets of snot started. I figured that that was just from street dust, or at worst I'd be developing allergies. Then I got a fever.

Covid test came back negative, this is just something else.

Rescuing items from the grocery store

I'll sometimes grab products in the store that someone else left in the wrong shelf, just because I don't know what'll happen to them if I don't.

Dinner plans

Confession: we usually eat separate meals. I would like to cook for two, but bf feels like our tastes are too incompatible to come up with a compromise every single day.

Processing

The cool thing about my bf is that when he's talking in his sleep, he sounds just as clear as when he's awake and the only way I know he's not is because he's asking me about the condition of a vehicle that doesn't exist and which we don't know.

But when he actually wakes up, he spends the first hour looking like one of those babies who was born 3 minutes ago and isn't entirely sure yet about whether they're happy with being involved in a conscious existence.

Noble Steed

I've been having a bit of an artistic burn out/art block - more than a bit, actually. After finishing the first volume of A Friend of Caesar (which is being processed by the publisher now!), I couldn't make myself create anything anymore, save for the foxes, which are mercifully simple to draw. But I had my first session with a new therapist today! She seems really promising and I'm hoping to get back on the wagon when it comes to art - going back to working on volume 2 next week!

Big helmet

The new helmet my bf got for Airsoft really is massive - the original punchline was Green wanting to use it as a fruit bowl, but I couldn't think of a way to write it that wouldn't feel needlessly mean-spirited.
