New year, new stuff! Land of Lions chapter 2 is nearly all done and I'll soon be starting chapter 3. 

But on top of comics, I want to work on some other things this year! Namely, I want to tackle drawing Furry characters. It's something I never really explored before but Land of Lions has the Can Ui which are a furry race (and I suppose Murin count too?) so I want to get into it, practice, and enjoy drawing something a little different. ...

Here is the process for my latest art! I kept adding more details as it went but sometimes I don’t notice until after coloring that an image is looking particularly sparse or plain.

Baby Murin

Mosskat wanted to know what a baby Murin looked like… so I drew it!! So teeny tiny and bite sized. Keep them away from wild animals 💕

They hop around on all fours before learning to walk upright.

I love doing this sort of reference for characters. And I needed to quickly decide how Muna’s bag would look for the current page I am working on… so by quickly I mean “got totally sidetracked designing the unnecessary”

And we are back with new pages! Thank you for putting up with me while I made so many illustration posts last month… but new year, new Land of Lions!

Garden Dragon

And the set is done!!! 8 total dragons! I fell just shy of finishing the set before 2023 but I didn’t want to rush the coloring yesterday and end up with something I wasn’t proud of. The garden dragon is different from all the others. Hes smaller, friendlier. And its an interior instead of an exterior shot. I worried it might stand out from the rest of the set too much but decided different is good sometimes.

Garden Dragon : Process

Not too many changes between start and finish on this one, but I did change the angle of his head since the profile wasn’t doing it for me

River Dragon

Number 7 in the series! Nearly there! I am trying to finish before 2023 💦 I am trying very hard to draw vastly different settings for each Dragon, and for each dragon to look and feel different. Some dragons look fast. Some are vicious. Some are big and slow. The river dragon is of the chunky variety, but don’t let your guard down! His eyes are intelligent.

River Dragon : Process

I initially planned for the lighting to be brighter all around with a few dark shadows. But then I decided I preferred the idea of a dark jungle with just a little light breaking through the dense trees.

Water Dragon

I never really liked the ocean because I know there are creatures out there in the deep and under the surface that are beyond my comprehension. Water isn’t really the human element so when you go out there, you’re like an outsider in a world of aliens built to live in that element. 💦

Water Dragon : Process

The process for the water dragon! This one was a much more straightforward process than the Mist Dragons because I had the idea of exactly what I wanted already really solidly in mind.

Mist Dragons

Number 5 in the Dragon set! Featuring Bryn! The other dragon images all involve facing them on the ground, in the water, in the forest. But I wanted to draw one where someone was brave enough to head up into their domain in the sky. Where people are pretty helpless. Hes going to have to rely heavily on his steed to catch him and his ropes to tether him to the dragons before they can fly out of his reach. Mist Dragon : Process

Ok so this one has a hell of a process. I sketched the drawing, intending to take it one way and it wasn’t until it was nearly finished that I finally admitted I was unhappy with it. I kept hoping that I would be more satisfied once it was done but… nope.

I just wasnt happy with the composition and the stiffness. My drawings often have a kind or “calm” to them, even if it’s a dramatic scene but it was just a little too stilted.

Tiger Forest

A different kind of tiger, but still! Kohei and Akamori with some surrealism. I like dreamy images that don’t really make sense but they look like, in their own context and world, as if that is their strange sort of reality.

Ruins

More flooded ruins, my favorite 💚. My take on the concept of a “snake charmer”. I hoped that with the painting on the wall warning of a dangerous snake guardian (bloody fangs) and the disrepair of the sanctuary that it would give off the feeling of a place that had long ago been feared/worshipped but had now been ignored for a long time.

Knighthood

I learned about the french knights who would pledge loyalty to their king. The king would clasp their hands, seal the ceremony with a kiss, and take the knight as “his man”. When I read about that, I had to draw it.

So romantic…

I would like to redraw this series at some point, fix it up. I’m content with it as is but I don’t think it’s perfect yet. I really want to to push the romance and that lovely moment.

Follow Me

This is a series of illustrations featuring my character Amun and Mosskat’s Dursus. This is my favorite series that I’ve drawn, I’m just so happy with how all four came out and the first one is probably the image I am most proud of.

Each image is titled:

Medianoche

I don’t think I mention it much, but I was born and raised in Miami. Medianoche sandwiches are comfort food and if you’ve never had one I recommend giving it a try! I wanted to draw a picture that felt like miami. Warm and neon and awake at all hours. Whenever you say “Miami” people imagine the beach, but I always think of the old neighborhoods and the zoo. (Metro zoo had the best aprepas ever made)

Space Terrarium

I know I keep saying it, but I really do want to try drawing more scifi. I always lean more towards fantasy and older architecture but I want to try my hand at futuristic locales that don’t look boringly pristine.
