SOME FOOTBALL COMICS - going out to ‘Zine Club members

I got copies of my newest ‘zine, SOME FOOTBALL COMICS, back from the printer’s today and will be immediately sending them out to ‘Zine Club members. 16 pages, full color. It’s about NFL football but of course it’s not really all about NFL football. Members look for this showing up in your mailbox soon!

Are You Ready For SOME FOOTBALL COMICS??

I wanted to share this cover image for the new 'zine I am in the process of finishing up. SOME FOOTBALL COMICS is filled with cartoons having to do with America's Actual Pastime, watching NFL football. I should be getting this out to the printer's at some point next week, which means copies will likely be headed out to mailboxes at the beginning of November.

If you aren't yet a member of my Almost Monthly 'Zine Club, today's a great day to sign up. I'll immediately send you a copy of th...

Newest ‘zine going into the mail this week

I’ll be dropping copies of my cartoon response to the novel “Now Is Not The Time To Panic” by Kevin Wilson into the mail for ‘Zine Club members this week. Keep an eye out for that!

Also, inspired by a Chris Schweizer Patreon post about Bluesky, I’m offering an invite code to whichever five Patrons send me a DM requesting one first. I’ve been sitting on these five invites, not sure what to do with them, and this seems like a good way to send them to good homes. I wish Bluesky...

PODCAST: TCJ Talkies - Julia Wertz on CAN’T WE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING MORE PLEASANT? and SPENT

With the news of Joe Matt's death, I was reminded of an old episode of the podcast I used to host at The Comics Journal, TCJ Talkies, where Julia Wertz and I discussed two autobiographical graphic novels, Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast and Joe Matt's final book, SPENT.

I went to listen to the episode on The Comics Journal website and realized that none of my old podcasts are available anywhere online anymore. I've been kind of mulling bringing a podcast ...

'Zine Club Update - Now Is Not The Time To Panic

Announcing the late-September 'Zine Club comic, a cartoon essay entitled Now Is Not The Time To Panic. 12 pages, full color, I'm sending this out to the printer's this weekend, so am anticipating being able to start mailing copies to 'Zine Club members towards the end of this month. Digital 'Zine Club subscribers will receive their copy of this next week

A Year of Making Comics - Update #16

It's been a little while since I've posted one of these "Year of Making Comics..." updates. My thinking with these semi-regular posts is that I could document how things are essentially going for me in terms of, well, obviously, a year of making comics. However, for a couple of reasons I lost a lot of steam.

The first reason was that it's getting much harder to write short cartoon essays and f...

Barbie!

I did the Barbenheimer this weekend, and I 1000% spent more time dwelling upon and turning over in my mind and struggling with the movie about the toy than I did thinking about the one about the atomic bomb.

I think Barbie will end up having a lot in common with The Last Jedi. It's definitely going to be divisive, it is in my opinion uneven, with with moments that are absolutely sublime, and it's a fantastic example of a filmmaker working with the most corporate of IP using the mo...

New FUN TIME Cover Reveal

Here are some images from the next issue of my FUN TIME 'zine series. The cover is above, and an inside cover image is below-

This page will carry all of the indicia, etc, it's still in progress, but it's a nice drawing on its own, I thought, and I wanted to share.

A Year of Making Comics - Update #15

A sneak-peek at an upcoming piece.

Recently I submitted this cartoon essay to The New York Times Book Review. Happily (because I put quite a lot of work into this pitch draft!) I heard back from them this week that they love it. I am guessing it will run in a few weeks, after some revisions and copyediting. This is the strip as I pitched it, it will be slightly different once it goes to print.

What is the 'Zine Subscription Anyway?

A nice thing about self-publishing new 'zines and mini comics regularly is that you get the thrill of "unboxing" a freshly printed comic every couple months. Seeing how it all turned out, getting to turn the pages, this is probably like 40% of why writers write. Additionally, I very much enjoy getting to take a photo of a nice stack of envelopes, brand new 'zines, about to go out into the mail, on t...

HOT SPACE MINI-PREVIEW

Been wrestling a tiny bit with whether or not to post my new HOT SPACE cartoon essay online. Part of me very much likes the idea of this being a comic you can only read in the 'zine format (and the way it's been coming out as I've been working on it, I think that format is really the ideal one for this piece). Like, I'm wondering if it may be more fun for 'Zine Club subscribers to have to wait for the print issue to show up in the mail to read the whole thing...
