Three kings ruled in China. Three kings, each dreaming of ruling all under heaven. Three kings who rallied their armies for battle. The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide.

Researchers are beginning to learn that the makeup of the Union and Confederate armies in the US Civil War was a lot more nuanced and diverse than we had previously known. Here is an episode on the accounts of some of those surprising soldiers!

Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, Guan Yu--these were the men who would define the Three Kingdoms period. Even though the actual history of this period is often conflated with the events of the historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there was still a lot of compelling drama and intrigue we can explore--let's delve in to the Yellow Turban Rebellion, which really did happen!

Queen Nzinga is a woman who, despite being one of the best- documented rulers in early modern Africa, still presents a puzzle. Her record, from ambitious noble, to guerrilla fighter, to consummate diplomat and religious reformer is still haunted by myths conjured up by her enemies--and a few constructed by Nzinga herself.
Catch our Lies episode next week for behind-the-scenes on our research for the Siege of Vienna and Queen Nzinga series!

Welcome Cassandra Khaw, who guest-wrote this mini-series! (We will be doing a combined Lies episode on this and Siege of Vienna in a few weeks)
Queen Nzinga of the Ndongo and Matamba Kingdoms, a scion of the Mbundu people, will spend forty years standing between the Portuguese and their ambitions, using everything at her command -- her cunning, her ruthless intellect, her military acumen, even the bodies of her people -- whatever it takes to succeed.

A few of us from Extra Credits were in Boston a few weeks back for PAX East. Boston's certainly not a city that lacks for history. Big glass skyscrapers stand right next to preserved state buildings from the 1700s. We walked the bridge over the Boston Harbor every morning, right past the Boston Tea Party Museum. The number of plaques to read was dizzying. But this memorial, a block away from my hotel, stood out most.
Boston is one of the cities in America with the large...

Vienna had received an offer from Kara Mustafa—surrender and live in peace as Muslims or Christians, or resist and condemn yourself to death and slavery. The city’s commander, Starhemberg, chose resistance, and Vienna was on full alert at the start. But those days of initial panic were done, and now the siege was grueling, bloody routine.
