Koteri Kollege Lesson 2: Legs

Welcome to the second lesson of the series! This week we'll be going pro at drawing legs. Legs are very similar to the arms when it comes down to the bones. Like the arm, there are 3 bones that comprise the leg. We have the femur, tibia, and fibula. Similar to the humerus, radius, and ulna. However, the fibula does not rotate around the tibia like how the radius does with the ulna, thus you don't rotate your feet from the knee. Instead, to ch...

Koteri Kollege Lesson 1: Arms

Welcome to lesson 1 of Koteri Kollege. I hope you've gotten a chance to watch my Youtube video, if not, check it out now! (unless it hasn't been uploaded yet). This will be the first of many. This lesson will help you to draw the arm with all of its muscles and bones. One day, you'll be able to draw it from memory, and from any angle. That is only if you take this seriously.  So let's begin.

PART 1: DRAWING FROM REFERENCE

Patreon glitched for me and only posted 1 page. So I guess I'll share the next few pages as their own posts.

How I use Reference

I was talking with some good folks over on my discord about using reference. There are several reasons as to why you should be using reference photos, and there are right and wrong ways on using them. The example image above shows how I used a Google images photo as a point of reference. My characters are different sizes and wearing different clothes, however, I can still see where the clothes fold and pull. When you begin using reference in this way, your brain works harder to calculate and ...

Hard Ink Brush (Patreon Exclusive Video)

Well whaddya know, I made my first Patreon exclusive video. I hope it gives you a clearer insight into how I make my comic. For those interested in getting my brushes for Procreate, visit my post from January 22.  Enjoy this long ass vid!

These two prisoners make a break for it. I filmed myself working on the last panel of page 117. I'll be posting the video soon so you can see how I use the brushes. It's quite long so it'll take some time to edit and render out.

Kings of Nowhere V2 page 105 Timelapse

This is a continuation of yesterday's post. I will be reiterating my process, especially the process on perspective. Unfortunately, procreate time-lapses don't show the grids.

First, Draw a rough thumbnail of the image. Use reference images to help you along the way. For example, I used images off Google maps Toronto, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. I did my best to place in a horizon line for each panel. Using the reference, I filled up space with things such as traffic lights, ...

Using Perspective

Sometimes, you gotta test yourself. You might just like drawing characters, but there is a joy from creating background environments that can't be beat. First off, you'll need reference if you haven't built the memory for it yet. I used streets of Hong Kong from Google maps.

The Shadow Takes Over

These 3 pages are from chapter 6. After a devastating end to chapter 5, Dante is overcome by anger. The darkness in him shuns away any hope remaining. In the final page, the borders go black; one, to show that we're moving into a night scene. Two, to signify the change in Dante's heart. The remaining 122 pages will have a black border until the finale.

Update

You all have been asking me for a color tutorial, so I've decided to make a video in it. My 12...

Oh my Goodness😴

The final chapter has been storyboarded. 52 pages in chapter 8 alone, making the page count for Volume 2 a healthy 222 pages. I'm exhausted from storyboarding everyday. Back to inking and sharing some clean pages with y'all! I'm 50% of the way there, and we're gonna get there before this year ends. I can't wait to see this fight scene get animated one day!

Chapter 7 entire storyboards

Hey peeps! Sorry for such a long time without any posts. I just moved and once I finally had time to work again, I went straight back to Kings of Nowhere. Now that I'm kinda back on schedule, I can start focusing on you lot once more!

Chapter 7 was a tough one to storyboard, and it will surely be a tough one to lay clean lines over. Half of the chapter is a car chase sequence, and the other half is an epic showdown between Bass and Jo. Physical strength vs Telekenesis.

Creature Anatomy

This is an older post, but I decided to revamp it. All land vertebrates share practically all the same muscles with a few exceptions . Apes and birds have clavicles unlike most other vertebrates, so morphology changes slightly, but a horse, human, and dog share 99% of the same muscles, just in different shapes and sizes. How did I get good at drawing creature anatomy? It all starts with humans.

In the first year of animation college, we had to memorize all 206 bones. We also had to mak...

How to Create Anthropomorphic Characters (Faces)

Now that Beastars has released and is actually doing well, the Beastie art scene is expanding. However, there is much an artist needs to grasp before venturing into the art of anthropomorphic animals. The most important thing is to really obsess over an animal, drawing it from all angles so often that if some dude on the street yelled "Yo my fellow meatsack, can you do a homie a solid and drew em an anteater on this tissue right here?" You're response can be, " Ew, it's used, but no worries, ...

Chapter 6 Storyboards

The climax of Volume 2. This is a part of the book I'm so proud of. I can already imagine it, music building up as each scene seamlessly blends in together like an orchestra of visuals and storytelling. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the finale. I know you can't read what the caption boxes say (I break down the script into smaller bite sizes) but you should be able to understand the characters and their intentions through visuals alone. I'm at a point in the book where I've r...

Creating a Figurine

As some of you may already know, I teamed up with Level52 Studio to create a collector's statue. Little did I know how much goes into the planning of such a thing. My initial drawing above was the concept for the statue. The first issue that they faced was that Bili on the traffic light was going to be too heavy for the lightpole, and he would most definitely snap off. I needed stronger points of contact. So I redid it.

Cars for Chapter 6

This was good practice for drawing some of my favorite cars. As much as I like drawing up made up cars, I love drawing cars I've admired since I was a kid. Instead of calling them by they're actual names, I took the GTA route and made up some new ones.

Cars are some of the toughest things to draw. There's many methods to drawing them such as using grid and perspective lines, but to be honest, every time I use those I never get it right. Personally, I find that paying attention to the d...

Introducing Captain Hookstag

A wise man once said, "Those who spend time looking at feet for penguin don't see giant anchor flying at head". Also, you might be wondering why I put that last picture in there. I drew that April of last year and wrote the dialogue to go with the image. That image became the epicentre of this chapter. Alot of my story ideas come from me thinking of one particular moment and then I create a story around that. When I have a bunch of key moments thought of, I string them together until I have s...

Sketch + Color Tutorial

Disclaimer: The Brush used for this piece is available in a post from January 22.

So, I finally got around to making another video for ya'll, plus this time I'll also explain my colouring method. First, let me explain my sketching phase. As you can see from the video, I don't have a rough and clean layer for the sketch; rather I lightly outline the forms I want to go over later.  The reasons for this are, one: time. I don't want to spend so long working on one dra...

My days have been spent drawing out pages. It's become my therapy, my coping mechanism, a catalyst for a dream to one day get into the gaming industry, as well as my hobby. I wanna do more tutorials, but I've been feeling very calm just doing these pages. I watched a Kim Jung Gi livestream and I feel like I clocked into overdrive. I decided to let loose some more, lines don't have to be straight and clean all the time, I don't need to strive for perfection. I just need to enjoy the process an...

The Blue Beach Boys

Ever stuck with colors? Well do not fret, simply use complementary colors. In this case I used warm yellow and a bluish purple. For the Charizard piece, I went with a dark reddish orange against a dark blue background. The way I do it is rather than go full complementary, for example when I have yellow, rather than go full purple, which you can, I choose a more blueish or a more redish tinted purple. I call it sidestep complementary. Try it for yourself!
