Our QAnon Friends In Government (E348)

In many sad cases, QAnon promoters suffer from broken relationships and derailed careers. But in fairness, QAnon promoters do occasionally end up in Congress or as Director of the FBI. This week Jake, Travis, and Liv check in with our QAnon friends in government. We chat about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s split with Trump and accusations that FBI Director Kash Patel is living large (while impressing his 24-year-old country singer girlfriend) on the taxpayer’s dime. We also discuss The Blaze’s bumbling attempt to identify the January 6th Pipebomber through “gait analysis” and Trump’s new involvement in the case of former Colorado County Clerk Tina Peters, who is serving a 9 year prison sentence for election interference. 

We don’t cover the newly released emails about Epstein, not because any of us have been tourists to Little Saint James, but because the document tranche was inconveniently released shortly after we recorded this episode.  We will however cover that, along with the spin conspiracy world, next week.

AGI Is a Conspiracy Theory (E347)

Have you been having fun with the new AI tools? Have you been doing research with GPT-5? Coding your projects with Claude? Turning pictures of your friends into cartoon characters from the Fairly Odd Parents using the image editing tool Nano Banana? 

Are you impressed with what they can do? Well guess what? You’re only impressed with them because you’re basically a naive child. You’re like a little child with an etch a sketch who is amazed that they can make crude images by turning the knobs, oblivious to greater possibilities. At least, that’s the impression you get when listening to tech leaders, philosophers, and even governments. According to them, soon the most impressive of AI tools will look as cheap and primitive as Netflix’s recommendation algorithm in 2007. Soon the world will have to reckon with the power of Artificial General Intelligence, or “AGI.”

What is AGI? Definitions vary. When will it come? Perhaps months. Perhaps years. Perhaps decades. But definitely soon enough for you to worry about. What will it mean for humanity once it's here? Perhaps a techno utopia. Perhaps extinction. No one is sure. But what they are sure of is that AGI is definitely coming and it’s definitely going to be a big deal. A mystical event. A turning point in history, after which nothing will ever be the same.

However, some are more skeptical, like our guest today Will Douglas Heaven. Will has a PhD in Computer Science from Imperial College London and is the senior editor for AI at MIT Technology review. He recently published an article, based on his conversations with AI researchers, which provocatively calls AGI “the most consequential conspiracy theory of our time.”

Jake and Travis chat with Will about the conspiracy theory-like talk from the AI industry, whether AGI is just “vibes and snake oil,” and how to distinguish between tech breakthroughs and Silicon Valley hyperbole.

Jason Shurka, the brains behind the multi-million dollar operation, used the funds to bankroll a brand new streaming platform, Unifyd TV,  whose offerings include documentaries made by QAnon promoters. According to the promoters of this quack cure, their work is approved by a secret society of powerful entities who are dedicated to elevating humankind called “The Light Systems” cabal or “TLS.” One member of The Light Systems, a figure called “Ray,” is regularly filmed while wearing a face-concealing hoodie and gloves in order to preserve his anonymity in interviews with Shurka. These interviews can be seen on Unifyd TV.

Dead Internet Theory (Premium E308)

A few years ago “Dead Internet Theory” was just some creepypasta. But thanks to the power of Artificial Intelligence, our most dystopian nightmares become more plausible by the day.  The theory reached public awareness after it was published on the small webforum Agora Road’s Macintosh Café in January of 2021. Pseudonymous author “IlluminatiPirate” posted the theory, which he claimed had developed earlier on the 4chan board /x/ and Wizardchan.

Becoming Candace (E335)

There isn’t yet a tariff on conspiracist narratives. So former Daily Wire podcaster Candace Owens imported one from France. Which is why she now finds herself the subject of a serious lawsuit filed by the French President Emmanuel Macron and the First Lady Brigitte Macron. 

Owens used Instagram influencer aesthetics to recycle a 2021 theory for American audiences that was originally promoted by a French spiritual medium and spread through “Yellow Vest” and antivax networks. For some reason, Owens wasn’t satisfied with the genuinely odd history of the Macrons’ relationship (they met when Brigitte was married with children and Emmanuel was just 14, despite most American sources claiming they met when he was 15.) Instead she picked up the convoluted conspiracy theory that Brigitte is really her brother Jean-Michel Trogneux who became a trans woman and proceeded to assist with turning Emmanuel into an MKULTRA-controlled “Manchurian Candidate.” In Owen’s ludicrous tale, the Macrons then killed anyone who started asking questions about Brigitte’s past, Clinton-body-count style. But since this nonsense is powered by crude bigotry rather than any investigatory impulse, the evidence is unsurprisingly weak. Owens’ method of argumentation involves ignoring the fact that Jean-Michel Trogneux is clearly alive and a separate person, looking at real photos and declaring them fake, and birthday numerology. 

Travis, Jake, and Julian unpack Owens’ past, the history of the conspiracy theory, how she promoted it through the 8-part series “Becoming Brigitte,” and the lawsuit that now threatens her independent media empire.

This week we are joined by Dr.  Olivier Jutel, a lecturer in the Department of Media, Film & Communication at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. His scholarly focus is in communication studies and media theory, particularly around populism, digital media, political economy, and critical theory.

Travis and Julian chat with Dr. Jutel about his iconoclastic take on the paradigms that have dominated U.S. technology and communications policy since 2016. 

Olivier argues that fear of foreign influence has been leveraged by a coalition of Silicon Valley firms, national‑security agencies and allied think‑tanks to deflect structural reform of platforms. Drawing on Cold‑War communication theory, this coalition frames all online conflict as “information warfare,” treating citizens as passive targets for behavioral manipulation while ignoring deeper political‑economic drivers of democratic decay. Jutel retraces the military origins of mass‑communication research, critiques Shoshana Zuboff’s “surveillance capitalism” thesis, and dissects the role of high‑profile disinfo professionals whose methods, he contends, don’t question the core assumptions of tech industry platforms and national‑security priorities. 

Olivier concludes that while this disinformation framework is past its heyday, its war‑like view of social life persists, empowering actors such as Palantir while sidelining antitrust and public‑interest remedies. The solution? A shift toward true democratic governance of digital infrastructure.
