1) I am pausing the billing cycle for this month - so no one will be charged in February. I had a nice routine going and then I went and got a puppy and everything was thrown off and now I'm finally getting back to making stuff.
2) I appreciate any feedback from anyone regarding what I can do to make the Patreon feed more engaging. Should I do dirtier content? Would the 12 Inch comic pages released weekly be enough? Should I start posting different stories? I would like to get a n...

I am a little behind this week... I thought I could keep on schedule after I got a new puppy but - and I'm sure anyone who has ever raised a puppy already knew - that didn't happen.
I am halfway through coloring the next 12-Inch comic page and will have it up on Monday. But I did get some sketching done, mostly from reference.

This character (above) used to be named Skull-Zar, he used to be taller, he used to have longer legs and bigger feet and his skeleton head used to look more like a traditional skeleton. He used to wear something that looked more like overalls and then a mechanic's jumpsuit - but with a medieval twist - and none of this was "right". Skull-Zar didn't "work" for me. I had a lot of little ideas that were correct by themselves, but did not work together.
But I put Skull-Zar away and started ...

I cannot stress enough how much importance I am putting on grouping my character designs together as I am working on them.
While toiling away in the vacuum that is designing a single character I tend to get to a place where I "nail it" (even if its just for the time being) but then... put them next to another equally "nailed" character from the same concept and think: "Well, this doesn't work after all..."
Above, are some of my Jockstrap Academy crew - a mix of gene...

In terms of artistic direction, one of the big differences between Disney's Aladdin & Disney's Beauty and the Beast is that, in the former the background characters were designed in advance. I cannot verify this anecdote, but it makes a lot of sense to me, because Aladdin's minor characters are far more distinctive and consistent. By comparison, they look like someone planned ahead.
In my years of making comics, I am definitely guilty of making up a minor ...

This new promo image is my personal favorite. What do you think?

My plan for my general use 12-Inch Roommate promos are to create three that speak to its 1) sitcom nature 2) character relationship and 3) theme of the story. And then after a short period of time: re-do them.
I always made promo art pieces and never really loved the result so I didn't use them a lot, but I've decided now that it's best to lean into that. Make on you like, use it for a little bit and then make a new version - even if its the exact same promo - just draw i...

My character design cycle has been:
STEP ONE - Dig out all that reference material you've been hoarding.
STEP TWO - Apply ideas from the reference to an existing idea
STEP THREE - Sit back and like the result
STEP FOUR - Realize the result does not line up with other characters you've worked on for the same project
So after edging a character closer to what I think I want, I then line them up with their peers and try to find ways to unify the designs. Usually its adjustin...

I really enjoy projects with fake worlds and not just like, "Here's a city on an alien planet" or "Here's a post-apocalypse Earth society", but like "Here's a setting in the past, but [insert historical event] never happened..." or "Here's two things mashed together to make this other kind of familiar thing..." When I worked in animation, if you would've asked me what was my dream project, i would've said Verdi's opera Aïda.
That was years ago and the ideas are just sitt...

After drawing 8 or so pages of the new 12-Inch, I've been going back and refining my model sheets to remind myself how these characters should actually look. I probably take model sheets a little too seriously - I blame it on my animation background - but I really enjoy the result even if I continue to break my own rules moving forward.

I've have this SFW project for years that started with my love of Disney villains but quickly grew to encapsulate larger ideas around sci-fi/fantasy in general. All the characters are both popular archetypes from these sources but also analogs for marginalized communities.
Over the years I've drawn and drawn each one but never really feel like I've nailed any of them perfectly - but I always feel like I am close to the target. Above is a character named Mrs. Boodler, who I've always en...

I've spent the last week going over the first 8 pages of my new 12-Inch Roommate book looking for small revisions and laying down color. I've learned a lot about how to draw these characters and I'm trying to make note of it before I move on to the second part of the first chapter.

This week, I broke away from my larger 12-Inch story to work on some smaller ones. This has turned out to be very helpful in solidifying character designs and jumping right to the fucking. They also feel like less of a commitment - like, I'll work knowing full well that I can go back in an re-draw a panel that isn't working even after its been colored.
I think these mini-stories will be sent to Patrons via Dropbox link. Does that sound good?
A NSFW re-visit of a storyline from my book collection: "Attack of the 12-Inch Roommate".

After a day of running around my office packing and moving shit and checking items off a list, I came home mentally exhausted and emotionally drained but made myself clean my apartment anyway. It's funny how much accumulates when you're just in and out all the time, things staying where you dropped them as you enter. Piling up. I figure it's best to try to stay on top of things best I can for my own sanity.
For the move (my office is going into storage) I've been trying to things in wi...
I've been brushing up on my storyboard skills lately, I've only had a little experience with it when I worked in animation studios. One of the things I've taken from this research and been applying to my comic work is working on the X and Z axes - which is just a drawing nerds way of saying draw in 3-dimensions. This sometimes involves foreshortening - which I was never particularly good at but sometimes you just gotta or everything comes out flat as shit.
I have a whole file of photos...
Have you noticed the amount of gay memes that focus on top-bottom identity? Like a photo of a yard decorated for Halloween with a two story skeleton - "6'4" Bottoms terrorizing the gay community" or a blurry picture of a twink - "How Tops take pictures of their bottoms". I find them quite amusing - usually for their crypticism.
This morning's drawing session was rife with my usual reminders that storytelling is all about relationships and that needs to be built into the foundation. And ...
