Clocktower

This was a really fun piece to pick up and continue! I actually had the base sketch for this done a while ago, but really struggled to put together the rest of the scene, until about three days ago. Something about perspective clicked (just a little bit more!) and I was able to sort of cobble together a scene that I think works.

I'm also making it a personal mission to get back into creating more "sets" again :) It's been a while and I think those are always a good way to make things m...

EP28 - Designing Better Drafts

Hey everyone! I wanted to try out a simpler, more direct presentation format for this episode, just jumping in and explaining the topic while drawing. Where usually I would have the good ol' powerpoint slide lecture first, followed by a prepared set of examples, here I tried my hand at starting it off with a live demo while talking.

It was a lot harder than expected, but I think it flows a lot better as well with being able to demo everything live. I think I will definitely have to kee...

EP27 - Designing Better Poses (Homework Review)

The homework review for last month is up now!
Thank you very much as always for participating - the exercise this time round is definitely a bit more technical (and potentially really hard), so I'm really happy that many of you gave it a try :)
As always, feel free to ask me any questions regarding your submission here as well, and I can answer them to the best of my ability.

Thank you again for your support and watching as always!

GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP28 (Process Steps)

The process steps for this month's works are up! It's definitely interesting and eye-opening to look back on the pieces, and how they progressed with a refreshed perspective.

I also talk more about how each piece came to be, and find out areas early on in the process where I might have encountered difficulties and mistakes. This definitely has been one of the tougher months of late, but I'm still committed to keep trying my best to make better art!

Thank you as always for your a...

In the Fog

This was a really fun piece to start off with as a attempt, and I had a pretty ambitious plan! Sadly, it seems my skill is still lacking in many ways.

I really put all I had into this piece, but (as its becoming a pattern of late), I feel like I hit a wall again.

The complexity of the pose also allowed space for a lot of tough questions to pop up as I progressed, and I feel I couldn't answer all of them despite trying my best. (Full discussion in this month's process video!)

I wanted to tackle a more complex pose this time, and hoo boy did I bite off more than I could chew!

I've been in a bit of a slump honestly, having been rejecting a lot of pieces that were WIP, and ending up with precious few that can even make it to the end. This one was also close to being abandoned - and I think there are still plenty of mistakes, but I felt it was worth trying to finish with what I had!

I liked the overall setting very much - playing an instrument in an...

GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP27 (Process Steps)

The process for this month's works are up! These were two really tough ones when it came to the detailing, with the composition giving me trouble all the way to the end. I had quite a bit to mention with the first piece (Cathedral), especially when it came to figuring out what lighting scheme to use, and for the second piece, it was all about the setting!

As always, I hope you will find it helpful, and thank you so much for your kind support!

EP27 - Designing Better Poses

This month's tutorial is up! I wanted to focus more and narrow the scope of these, and in line with that new "philosophy", today's tutorial is very compact and concise, demonstrating one very key technique that I would encourage everyone to try.

As with last month there is also a homework component that you can submit for review next month (if you so wish), on Discord under the thread for this video! Submissions close 20th June.

EP26 - Designing Better Costumes (Homework Review)

Thank you all again for participating in last month's tutorial! Here's my review of all your submissions - I did them in order of earliest submitted to latest, so feel free to scroll through to find yours if the video is too long! It was really fun to look at all your hard work, and heartening to know there are so many people of all skill levels eager to learn.

I hope you will very much enjoy this one, and find it helpful for your own drawing process!

Thank you all of you amazing...

Drawing is hard!

It's also been a little quiet from me lately, so I wanted to give everyone an update as to how things are going. Tutorial, homework review and process video is still coming along, and I'm still working on new art as always!

I also wanted to show you guys a batch of drawings that made it pretty far down the pipeline, but had to ultimately give up on. My instincts tell me I just don't have the skill level to properly complete them yet.

I thought this was a good chance to share ...

Spooky!
I'm in a "hands yet to catch up with eyes" phase recently, and it has been so hard to draw things without feeling that something is not quite right. Still, it was good challenge trying my best to finish this piece to the best of my abilities.

Small things here and there just look unfinished, but not in the good way, and no matter how I try, it seems really impossible to solve! It's hardly my first rodeo when it comes to phases of learning like this, so I'm taking it in...

It was such a process to finally put this piece together!

I had quite a few goals going into this, one of them being a different take on lighting as compared to the previous one depicting this character - I struggled through several iterations making a whole lot of adjustments finally arriving at this result.

Even the surroundings took quite a while to nail down, constantly finding myself needing to "up the game" with regards to actually thinking about the proper details rather...

UPDATE: Homework review has been uploaded here!

What? A new thumbnail design?!

I'm trying a new format here! - it was really great having the interactive 2nd anniversary event last month, and I think it would be something really valuable as a mainstay here on the page.

So for this month, I consciously made a more bite-sized tutorial that you can actually follow along, and I'll review you...

GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP26 (Process Steps)

This month's process steps are up! I haven't been too happy with some recent WIP's, so I've been spending quite a bit of time trying out a whole bunch of new compositions (I show a peek at the end of this video!).

Sadly, that means only 2 completed pieces this month - on the bright side, it also means I'm able to go a lot more in depth for each of the processes, compared to the usual highlight-style of explaining things.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think down b...

Knight

It was nice to revisit an overcast-style of lighting along side more fantasy themes! The armor and pose took a while to figure out, but I'm glad how it managed to come together in the end. The BG was also quite a bit of a challenge - I internally debated whether to draw it fully, but honestly ran out of energy to take on the daunting task of planning and implementing proper architecture in the middle of the workflow.

Still, it was fun to draw armor and knights!

It's been awhile since I've got to do some more fantasy-themed stuff! It's a nice break from the more contemporary/realistic, but I'm definitely feeling the rustiness on my part. Still, it's nice to be able to make up details as I go along, something of a luxury indeed!

It took quite a bit of effort to think up a workable composition for this scene - I finally settled on something with a mix of realism, but with a bit of added abstraction. Feel free to let me know what you think!<...

Process steps rundown for this month's pieces is up! I recorded this with a bit of an ulcer/sore on my lip so do excuse me if it sounds a bit weird in terms of voice and pacing.

The highlight for this set was probably trying to figure out the daunting task of drawing the jacket's back view with the design - looking back now I feel it could definitely used a couple more passes to add further detail, but honestly it was still a great learning experience!

2nd Anniversary Special

It was really fun looking through all of your submissions, I'm super thankful to everyone who participated! I wanted to keep things more compact, but the number of submissions made it quite impossible :)

As always, I hope some of the advice and tips I share in the video will be helpful to your own work! And thank you very much for your kind support here on Patreon.

p.s. this month's process video will be up tomorrow as well!

This was an interesting set to paint - plenty of familiar angles and lighting, but with some extra attention to costume design. Her jacket was really tough to draw! In the end, I'm still quite happy with it :)

As always, the process video for this will be up soon, and please look forward to the special video this month (check out the previous post!)

Participate in the 2nd Anniversary special video!

Seeing as it's the 2 year anniversary of this Patreon, I wanted to do something a bit more community oriented!

Coming off of a giant tutorial series, I feel it's a good time to do something a bit more engaging as less technical, and much more fun! For this month, instead of a regular tutorial video where I ramble on by myself, I would like to invite everyone to submit a pair of artwork - one when you've just started, and one that you made the most recently.

In the video, I'll t...

Just a quick update to let you know that if you've got a Discord, you can access the server for this Patreon with no extra steps beside linking your accounts :) For those unaware, it's sort of a chatroom/forum type platform that's really useful for communities to discuss and interact - totally optional of course!

I don't plan to migrate any content away from here at all, so if don't want to go through this extra step, it's completely fine.

EP24 Character Mega Tutorial P8 (Finale)

Finally we're done!

It has been a really fun but tough process working on this big tutorial, showcasing as many aspects of making an illustration as I could during these 8-9 hours. From the sketch to painting, to redoing everything, to painting more, and finally finishing, I've hope you've found some insight and helpfulness in watching me struggle through this particular piece!

Next month onwards I want to switch things up just a little, since it's also the 2 year anniversary of...

After Work

I've been really hard at work on this new set for the past 3 weeks, I hope you enjoy it!
It was quite challenging figuring out how to compose a series of scenes that not only describes the ongoing narrative, but also showcases a variety of angles. Surprisingly, I've also seemed to have gotten a bit more competent and confident at more closeup shots - especially on things with smaller details and different materials :)

Happy 2023! This one was a really challenging set to do and I think it's a nice way to start the year. I've been deliberately avoiding more "standard" portrait shots unless I've got a really good narrative/compositional reason, and so ended up with these.

The middle two pieces were definitely the hardest to get a handle on, but were still fun to attempt :)

The mega tutorial continues! I had to compress things a little bit more this time to make sure we cover a bit more meaningful ground. It's a  bit of a compromise, but hopefully I'll still be able to achieve my goal of showing everyone a full "slice" of each stage in the process. As always, feel free to ask any related questions and tell me any feedback you have :)
