This was a really fun piece to pick up and continue! I actually had the base sketch for this done a while ago, but really struggled to put together the rest of the scene, until about three days ago. Something about perspective clicked (just a little bit more!) and I was able to sort of cobble together a scene that I think works.

Hey everyone! I wanted to try out a simpler, more direct presentation format for this episode, just jumping in and explaining the topic while drawing. Where usually I would have the good ol' powerpoint slide lecture first, followed by a prepared set of examples, here I tried my hand at starting it off with a live demo while talking.

The process steps for this month's works are up! It's definitely interesting and eye-opening to look back on the pieces, and how they progressed with a refreshed perspective.

This was a really fun piece to start off with as a attempt, and I had a pretty ambitious plan! Sadly, it seems my skill is still lacking in many ways.
I really put all I had into this piece, but (as its becoming a pattern of late), I feel like I hit a wall again.
The complexity of the pose also allowed space for a lot of tough questions to pop up as I progressed, and I feel I couldn't answer all of them despite trying my best. (Full discussion in this month's process video!)

I wanted to tackle a more complex pose this time, and hoo boy did I bite off more than I could chew!
I've been in a bit of a slump honestly, having been rejecting a lot of pieces that were WIP, and ending up with precious few that can even make it to the end. The process for this month's works are up! These were two really tough ones when it came to the detailing, with the composition giving me trouble all the way to the end. I had quite a bit to mention with the first piece (Cathedral), especially when it came to figuring out what lighting scheme to use, and for the second piece, it was all about the setting!

I'm in a "hands yet to catch up with eyes" phase recently, and it has been so hard to draw things without feeling that something is not quite right. Still, it was good challenge trying my best to finish this piece to the best of my abilities.

It was such a process to finally put this piece together!

This month's process steps are up! I haven't been too happy with some recent WIP's, so I've been spending quite a bit of time trying out a whole bunch of new compositions (I show a peek at the end of this video!).

It was nice to revisit an overcast-style of lighting along side more fantasy themes! The armor and pose took a while to figure out, but I'm glad how it managed to come together in the end. The BG was also quite a bit of a challenge - I internally debated whether to draw it fully, but honestly ran out of energy to take on the daunting task of planning and implementing proper architecture in the middle of the workflow.

Process steps rundown for this month's pieces is up! I recorded this with a bit of an ulcer/sore on my lip so do excuse me if it sounds a bit weird in terms of voice and pacing.
The highlight for this set was probably trying to figure out the daunting task of drawing the jacket's back view with the design - looking back now I feel it could definitely used a couple more passes to add further detail, but honestly it was still a great learning experience!

This was an interesting set to paint - plenty of familiar angles and lighting, but with some extra attention to costume design. Her jacket was really tough to draw! In the end, I'm still quite happy with it :)

Finally we're done!
It has been a really fun but tough process working on this big tutorial, showcasing as many aspects of making an illustration as I could during these 8-9 hours. Happy 2023! This one was a really challenging set to do and I think it's a nice way to start the year. I've been deliberately avoiding more "standard" portrait shots unless I've got a really good narrative/compositional reason, and so ended up with these.
The middle two pieces were definitely the hardest to get a handle on, but were still fun to attempt :)
