Clearly, Ragnar needs to be intellectually stimulated. And his people can't provide that. They're too primitive and think only of their own short-term interests (always invoking the will of the gods). Ragnar wants to explore, discover, and educate himself. Saxon culture interests him because it contains interesting details. He realized that the Saxons had greater potential as a people in the long run. Killing people for fun and pissing on the Catholic religion no longer holds any interest for him. Because he realizes the limitations of his own people. To the point where he tries to save it by cohabiting with the Saxons.
