[EARLY VIDEO] Metro tunnel test train!

Here it is! A tour of Parkville, plus a ride through the tunnel to Anzac and back. Enjoy!

[EARLY VIDEO] Metro tunnel test train!

Comments

Going fully driverless wouldn't have really been possible, because they're still running on conventional suburban lines at both ends, unlike Sydney metro which is a fully closed system. The trains are going to operate automatically (but still with a driver present) between West Footscray and Westall. Looks like our driver was driving manually however on this occasion.

Beautiful, love the cavernous stations. How did Melbourne Metro decide not to go driverless?

The trains run on CBTC, which is fully electronic signalling with instructions given to the driver in the cab (and the trains can also operate automatically in some circumstances). It allows trains to get much closer together, because they only have to be separated by their braking distance + margin for error, whereas with traditional signals you're always separated by the lengths of the signal blocks. The metro tunnel has a page about it here: https://bigbuild.vic.gov.au/projects/metro-tunnel/about/high-capacity-signalling And the much more indepth wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications-based_train_control

Was wondering about the signalling to allow that reverse run, then you said conventional signals aren't used... Can you expand on that? 🤔

They’re building a Munnel under Melbourne! Can you believe it?
