Matt on 'Embrace the Void' discussing AI with Aaron
Added 2023-05-05 02:10:18 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
While we are busy catching up on things you might enjoy Matt's recent appearance with friend of the pod, Aaron Rabinowitz on his philosophy themed podcast 'Embrace the Void'.
I've embedded it above or you can go to the website: https://voidpod.com/podcasts/2023/4/27/gpt-4-with-matt-browne
Or subscribe if that tickles your fancy.
It's a discussion about chat GPT and AI in general and not a Chris in sight!
Enjoy!

2023-06-11 09:29:21 +0000 UTCGreat chat. I thought GPT was just an advanced search engine until hearing Matt’s experiments. Inspired me to use chatgpt for work for the first time today. Got it producing tables of data for me. Nailed it with the first prompt. Impressed .

2023-05-08 10:39:05 +0000 UTCIt was an interesting discussion for sure, but I did think that Matt was a little too casual or blithe about all the time that can be saved for him personally (and for others in secure jobs) thanks to ChatGPT. For a lot of people, especially those in the gig economy, this will of course mostly mean job insecurity or job losses, not more time to go to the beach. And it seems like this might soon happen so quickly and at such a scale that I think it warrants some concern, even from those who are personally enjoying or benefiting from AI. Of course, the job market will always change due to changes in technology, and yes, it has happened before, but surely this change might lead to some serious problems, at least in the short term, if not more? The tone in the discussion was a little too cheerful for me, and didn't really address the potential problems. ("I don't know" is an honest answer, but after a while it came across as a little flippant!) Side note: In danger of sounding like a luddite, I'm not sure I would personally get any use out of AI to kickstart a writing project. I'm a novelist and literary critic, so I know all about struggling with the blank page, but it's also through that struggle that the genuinely worthwhile ideas really force themselves through. I don't know, I guess creative writing might be a different beast than certain types of academic writing, and God knows we all work differently, but I can't help thinking that using AI as a shortcut is not a helpful idea for most writers. Maybe I'm romanticising the struggle here?? But I don't really think so. To state the bleeding obvious: I'm definitely biased here, being in the creative industry and knowing how much other artists worry about this rapid development. And I know that this wasn't exactly the focus of the talk on the pod. I guess I just bristled a little at the "time being saved" comment, because of course big companies are going to "save that time" by simply outsourcing as much as possible to AI. I'm not at all worried about being replaced by AI, but I'm worried about the whole creative economy, which is pretty reliant on a big network of jobs and tasks - not just the "ivory tower" ones like writing novels and plays or whatever. Anyway, rant over. It was interesting to learn more about how ChatGPT works, there was lots I didn't know. Will be sure to check out the Embrace the Void pod too. Love DTG and listen to every episode! Definitely one of my favourite podcasts.
