Early release of Oprah episode (pre-edited version)

Hi everyone,

Heading into the weekend thought you might enjoy early access to the Oprah episode. We have not finished editing, only made minor edits for clarity so if you notice any artefacts, insanely long tangents, or intrusive background noises then let me know.

We will edit down a bit more before general release.

I’ve listened to your episode on Oprah yesterday and I love how Matt recovered actual life advice from the spiritual nonsense. Being from outside of anglosphere I’ve never watched Oprah and I just don’t get her charm or her message, any time I hear clips of her speaking I’m instantly annoyed

What people think and what actually happens are not the same thing. ;)

Christopher Kavanagh

And after Max Tegmark maybe Richard Dawkins and then maybe Francis Crick

Kirsten Greed

How about Max Tegmark? Lots of food for thought with him at the moment. Maybe the Gurometer can help us worked out whether we are destined to become slaves of our zombie overlords.

Kirsten Greed

Can I throw in a vote for decoding Stephen Wolfram…dude wrote a book called “A New Kind of Science”…that’s got to warrant something

Thomas Jones

A kind analysis methinks. I've increasingly found her irresponsible and frustrating due to platforming and supporting those who have gone on to become really dangerous in the health/ spirituality world such as Christiane northrup or John of God. When the shit hits the fan she never makes any public statement or officially retracts support rather just moves onto enthusiastically platforming the next hot mess 🙈 this episode reminded me what people find charming about her

Eleanor curry

Oh and if Godwin comes on for right to reply- no more soft soap- please (look at Chris Williamson and Jamie. Both think they walked away unscathed I fear…)

Brainbiter

Think she also helped launch Eckhart Tolle ….one for the future? 🤔

Brainbiter

As you know, I never finish a thought with just one comment, so I just wish the two of you enjoyed making these as much as I enjoy listening. There, I said it, and I won't apologize.

Jennydiver

But, but, they are Nazis though.....

A great episode. It made me wonder whether we should cover Maya Angelou. I heard Brene Brown was influenced by her too.

Kirsten Greed

I'm more of a hystEric

Maarten Wesselius

The queen of woo, the child of destiny, the cosmic aligner ... yikes. Hard to listen too, I let it be after an hour.

Protagonist Science

She is as much an enabler as she is a guru herself. From Tony we can all be rich Robbins to Deeprak Chopra. Or the platform she gave grifters from the secret like James Arthur Ray and the damage he did. Go listen to Seek Safely podcast. The words of Gabby Bernstein, the universe has your back, used by my wife who wants to live a more spiritual life, a selfish life.

loving it so far! She's such a pro. She establishes a whole new genre mishmash of self help and popular daytime talk show, inspires a bunch of others that are heavier on the sleaze and cynically engineered, seems to outlast them all for the most part, and finishes on top as a tastemaker and career-maker for a couple of high profile medical grifters. It really puts the talents and aspirations of the current gurus to shame.

JustTheWorstEver

From the clips you hear how Oprah is savvy about being folksy at the right times to connect with everyday people in her audience. If the conversation gets either too heady or fawning she says something humbling, casting herself as an ordinary person.

Nice episode! Oprah's action+reaction to destiny framing is pretty simplistic, but is quite common among rich people, I believe. This idea also aligns well with Western individualism and the US's obsession with the American Dream, so it's not surprising that many resonate with her perspective. I am pretty sure humans as a species are not built to feel comfortable with luck as a parameter for their success. This is most obvious in interviews with nepo kids, but also in the case of Oprah, it's pretty clear. While she has undeniable virtues, there are likely thousands of women in the US with similar charisma and intelligence. Luck plays a significant role in why she, in particular, achieved her current status. It is more comforting to believe that one's own goodwill and efforts made the difference (the other side of the mirror is a bit toxic, however: it implies that others with similar abilities simply aren't thinking or acting with enough goodwill). Anyways, I'm excited about the Hitchens episode! My dark past includes being a Hitchens fan in my teens, which is a bit embarrassing now. In the beginning of his carrier he was pretty good, but eventually, he transformed into a Shapiro-like debate lord, where winning arguments became more important than the substance of the argument itself... PS: I am from the foreplay-gang, don't listen to the reviewer :D

I have another idea - Benjamin Boyce, the host of The Calmversations Podcast. Beware - lots of very loud breathing! 😬

Maruša MaaBee

It’s a joke 😉

Christopher Kavanagh

Great episode. I thought you were very fair and balanced and I agree with Chris about how that whole sort of positive thinking/prosperity doctrine stuff can actually be really problematic. Even though your right on face value it does sound like something that would be on a hallmark card, maybe with a 🌈 and a 🦄 . But I think in practice it often gets used to victim blame the poor and excuse the excesses of capitalism. Having come from a religious background I think the prosperity doctrine has had a lot to do with dragging the evangelical church to the heartless far right. In contrast to when I grew up in the church and there was less talk of 'God wants you to be rich' and more 'Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God'. I have been listening to an interesting podcast mini series about Hillsong Church which exposes how toxic this sort of theology can get: 'Faith on trial: Hillsong' by true crime Australia https://open.spotify.com/show/03rOjbEE2jOH7kNe6BPOjQ?si=Kxb1eVI4RSiEJEtytu25Eg

Chris “I watch Bluey, I know all about Australian life now.” 💯

Among Weinsteiniacs, I'm more of an Eric Freak than a Brethead.

Honestly I feel sorry for all the cultures in the world who have accents. It's so much easier not to have one at all, as I can attest from my own experience, in perfectly unsullied English.

Heather Geverding

You get an early episode! And you get an early episode! Everybody gets an early episode!

Heather Geverding

You've been taking Kurzgesagtizing lessons!

You guys need to learn the difference between desegregation and segregation

Klas Bergholtz

Wondered if I should listen to the work-in-progress but the opening theme washed away those doubts.

Robert Andrews

the Triggernometry brothers???????? Weinsteins on the mind

Diane Morrison

I have an idea for a guru - Phil Stutz (from the Jonah Hill Netflix documentary). He might be a good guru, and I liked a lot of what he said, but I did get some guru-ish vibes in the syncretic approach which had some newagey-ness to it, and the awe in which Jonah holds him. He sees a lot of celebrities as patients. He said he had been being seen as a therapist since he was a young child and that people would come to him for help. Anyway, I thought it would be an interesting topic; therapists as magical healers

Diane Morrison

I'm sorry but how is Matt suggesting Chris is the one in a glass house when it comes to accents? Maybe he lacks the culture to appreciate the mellifluous lilt of a Belfast accent. The Australian accent is the valley girl accent of the world.
