The Final HQ Update

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB0H731hNLI

This was the video I was yelling into the Twitters about. I experienced a lot of difficulty with rendering this, but it's all good now. Sadly I missed publishing this on Pi day, but I'l blame that on Premiere being dumb.

I've got a lot of info and a bunch of stories packed into this video, so it's ... long. But hopefully enjoyable! I rendered this with a lot of compression to save on upload time, so if you're noticing that the video stream is bad--it's me, not YouTube. Though honestly it doesn't look terrible to my eyes...

One thing to add: The connection is back up to 6 mbps! I had a feeling things were being weird temporarily because some of the speed tests I did had horrendous ping times, and upload speeds were all over the place, and thankfully I was right!

The next time I talk about HQ, the set will be there, the lights will be rigged, and it will be production ready!

I am very pleased to see you investing in your passion for making videos. New builds always present snagging problems and first-fix challenges, but you're very practical, so you'll get there eventually. As an ex TV Lighting person I reckon your "open" ceiling will readily lend itself to a versatile suspension grid system.

It's like they took the US layout, shoehorned in the UK return key... mirrored vertically... and then had nowhere to put the backslash key.

Thanks for passing on the tip about the powerbeam. I have a situation now where I needed to get ethernet out to a backyard shop 500ft away from the house, and the powerbeam did the trick!

Jason Dupree

Yep I tried that. It's not available in the area. Which is annoying!

Oh that was your suggestion! Thanks for chiming in. I bought the actual antennas back in December so I had no idea where to look for the original suggestion. It took this long to get them hooked up thanks to all the snow, but finally they're operational! And yes! It's back to 6 Mbps now. I noticed one of the connection boxes was open for a while in the rain, and maybe the lines got damp. It's shut now so I'll assume the ISP was doing work at one point, and hopefully that was the only cause

Nice to see that the new HQ is coming along. Regarding the outside trim, from what I could tell from the video, it looks like MDF. It's not a material I would ever consider using outside: it absorbs humidity like crazy. Paint helps, but as you can see, only a little... The crack in the corner that you pointed to seems to be caused by the trim warping (again, from what I could tell from the video), and again probably because it's made of MDF... Cedar would be a good alternative, but there are also plastic composite material that you could use, if you want to keep the same look... Also, when you were showing the top of the trim, I noticed that there is no "drip cap" on the top of the siding: You should definitively think about putting a "cover" on top of the wood siding, and not depend only on the caulking to keep the water out. Considering that the installer was willing to use MDF on the outside, I would check all windows/doors to make sure they all have drip caps too... From the videos that you've put out on this house, my feeling is that some of the sub-contractors used were not very experienced, or didn't care so much. This would explain some of the weirdness you see in some areas, such as the wood trim in the upstairs bedroom where your router is located (one big screw on each end to hold the board, and some of the board are even split... yikes...). Luckily for you, it sounds like the foundation and roughing were done properly... Also, regarding the outlets in the kitchen, just turn off all of the breakers except for one, and see which one still works, and repeat for all breakers... In fact, I would recommend doing this for all of the house before you move in so that you can get a good map of which circuit each outlet is connected to. Who knows, you might find a breaker that doesn't control anything (in my mind, that would justify tearing down drywall to find the other end of the wire!)... Good luck and keep the videos coming. BTW, you shouldn't be too surprise about the support you are getting on Patreon: The amount of work you put into every video is obvious! I don't think many people can talk about toasters, electric cars, light bulbs, and (gasp) pixels, and make it interesting. I consider myself knowledgeable, but I always seem to learn something new from every video... I'm sure I'm not the only one. Don't worry too much about quantity: I'd rather have a few quality videos and know that you are going at a pace that keeps things enjoyable for you... Good luck!

You've probably already checked to see but does AT&T not offer their "Fixed Wireless Internet" out there? It's got a 200GB~ cap and you get 10mbit out of it and its relatively cheap.

Thanks for the huge HQ update. Looks like great progress. I’m very pleased to hear my suggestion of a Ubiquiti link to somewhere with DSL worked out, even if that neighbour also seems to be marginal signal. Hopefully in summer it comes back to at least 6Mbps with drier lines. Good luck with moving the set! Ewen

This is the current American dream, have a successful YouTube channel that lets you afford a big enough house to have the studio in it. I don't know what the zoning is like where you are (I moved from McHenry County to Minnesota in 1970 when I was 13), but you should check to see if you can use the space just as a studio, or if you HAVE to live there as your primary residence.

Buying the house was a sound decision. Being close to work, in my experience, is so much better. But you need to segment work & fun for work/life balance. Looks like there's a couple of videos from this - your Beam solution, and wiring a 240V connection for your electric car (which I recently had to do myself). I hope the house doesn't have long term issues from sitting partially completed. I've found house inspectors to be almost worthless (they didn't spot the high water pressure on our current house).

Congrats on the progress at HQ. Hey, you got the Techmoan lights! Well, that's what I call them anyway. Someday, if you play your cards right, they'll be known as "Alec Lights." Enjoy the busy weekend setting up the studio, it sounds like it's going to be a wonderful place.

So at 28:28 you show the crappy keyboard with its crappy layout with the tiny backspace key. This is the kind of thing that's always made me wonder, and I have to ask because you're the type of curious person most likely to figure out the mystery. Why do you think it is that as an absolute rule, every garbage, bargain-basement keyboard you can find - as a universal rule - has this layout with a GIANT return key, and the backslash moved up to the top row, requiring a tiny backspace key. Every halfway decent keyboard on the other hand, always has a normal backspace, backslash beneath, and a rectangular return key. Is the bad layout a side-effect of where they're made, or something? Maybe it's a layout that's standard in China or something and they don't know/care that westerners hate it?

Daniel Pritchard

Techmoan also made a video about the same Neewer lights recently

As always, thank you for the excellent update. Makes me feel like I have a real stake in your Patreon campaign. Also *happy dance* for HQ finally coming online. Looking forward to the great videos to come :)

I love the progress at HQ! I hope the big move goes smoothly!

Kevin Kostka

Very much so!
