City Builders Breaking the Mold

Do mechanics limit our understanding of genre? Or can we re-invigorate and reinvent genres without harming the core of what players expect?

There is quite a significant faction of fandoms that are, to be honest, elitist jerks that would rather kill their own genre (or, in quite a few cases, their fandoms) than keep it alive out of sheer spite of anyone new. This is most common in genres that didn't undergo a system unification regimen (i.e., make the games as similar in systems to increase accessibility) in the late '90s/early 2000s (basically, everything NOT shooters in general), in my experience. Coming from a guy who started his gaming experience with games like Lucas Arts's Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, iPanzer '44, the original Panzer Elite, and later Homeworld (and its standalone expansion Cataclysm/Emergence), the Anno series (although, as an Annoite, I protest that Anno has no lose state, it certainly does, usually in terms of bankruptcy, though there are additional loss conditions that vary in each Anno game) in general, Rise of Nations, Sim City 3000, among others, this is probably the most STUPID thing that they could do. I'm glad genre mixing is getting talked about, though the discussions on it will inevitably go into a flame war. Please note that my personal opinion is: mechanics is a tool, and genres are part of the recipe. You need both to make a game.

I'm surprised Frostpunk wasn't in the list of high-stake city builders The amount of times I screamed at the frostbites getting worse! ๐Ÿ’—

I'm sorry to again be the one giving the hint that the wallpapers are missing. Just a question, would it be possible to have consistency in the filenames? Something like this "EH411_JohnBrown04_Wallpaper4K_01.png" is very useful, but this one "005-JB-Wallpaper4K_04.png" less so. There are around four or five different naming conventions which makes looking for the wallpapers for specific episodes or even series annoying. Love all you do

The Tropico series had a degree of risk and RP as well. As you build your island nation you had objectives and tasks to complete in a certain amount of time to keep your population happy and voting for you.

Oh, Against the Storm ! I just happen to buy it a few days ago ! I was shocked by its rogue-like aspect, especially when they just erase your colonies and give you a blank map ! And funnily, I had the same reaction. City building and rogue like ?! What's the next step, FPS meets... I don't know. I truly don't. And yet when it will exists, I will say "Of course, it couldn't have been anything else !" It really showed me the limits of my thinking when I was reflecting on video games. We're bound to see new genres appear, that have been hiding in plain sight. I'm thrilled to see what awaits us ^^
