There are, however, Expectations of Discretion: Scandals are to be Avoided and Liaisons are to be Terminated should such a Scandal Occur. The King, however, not only Appears to have no Indiscretion whatsoever, he seems to take Great Pleasure in Publically Flaunting his Womanising Lifestyle. The Origins of Elena “Magda” Lupescu are a Source of Debate and Confusion. It is Known that she Inherited her Catholicism from her Mother, who is a Jewish ~ Born Convert. Her Father, an Apothecary, is also Jewish ~ Born who Converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. She was Briefly Married to a Certain Lieutenant Ion Tâmpeanu, but Divorced some Time after the War. The King has long been Known as a Playboy, but he has been Acting differently with this Recent Mistress. He will be Remembered by Future Historians as a Syrian Military Officer and a Member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party who Served as that President from 1953 to 1954, after Seizing Power from Fawzi Selu [who had, himself, Seized Power from the Democratically ~ Elected President Hashim al-Atassi] in a Coup d’etat in 1953. Shishakli Studied at the Military Academy in Damascus [which was, later, Moved to Homs] and became an Early Member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, Founded by Antoun Saadeh, which Promoted the Concept of a “Greater Syria.” Following Syria’s Independence from , Shishakli Fought in a Volunteer Arab Army, Known as the Arab Liberation Army, during the 1948 Arab ~ Israeli War. The Arab Defeat in the 1948 Arab ~ Israeli War would Prove to be a Motivational Factor in the 1949 Military Coup Lead by Husni al-Za'im which Toppled Syria’s Weak Parliamentary System. Only Months after al-Za'im’s takeover, al-Za'im was Overthrown by a Group of Officers Connected with the SSNP, Including Shishakli and al-Za'im’s old Comrade, Colonel Sami al-Hinnawi, who Lead the new Military Junta. Shishakli Worked with al-Hinnawi, who Refused to Assume Power for himself and instead Restored Syria’s Parliamentary System. Al-Hinnawi became Chief of Staff of the Syrian Army. A Veteran Nationalist, Hashim al-Atassi, who had been Governor in the 1930s, became Prime Minister. Al-Atassi wanted to Create a Union with Hashemite Jazira, something al-Shishakli Greatly Opposed, Claiming that Hashim al-Atassi was the Driving Force behind Pro ~ Hashemite Sentiment in Syria. In December 1949, Shishakli Launched another Coup, the Third that Year, Arresting al-Hinnawi and Breaking Hashemite Influence in Syria, but keeping al-Atassi at his Post. He then Ordered the Assassination of Colonel Muhammad Nasser, the Commander of the Syrian Air Force, because he Threatened Shishakli’s Popularity within the Syrian Army. All of this Greatly Weakened the Pro ~ Union Elements in Syria, who continued to Work for Union with Jazira from Lebanon. Shishakli then Dissolved all Political Parties in a Return to Military Rule. He Banned a Number of Newspapers and Outlawed all Newspapers that were not Pro ~ Shishakli. He Banished the Ba’ath Leaders Akram al-Hourani, Michel Aflaq, and Salah al-Din al-Bitar, to Lebanon, where they begin to Actively Work against his Regime. As Leader of Syria, Shishakli sought good Relations with Western Countries, but Maintained Syria’s Uncompromising Stance over Israel. Syrian Relations with the Hashemite Monarchies of Jordan and Jazira were Poor during his Presidency, but he also Distrusted the Rapid Spread of Pan ~ Islamism. His Relations with Great Britain and the United States were Mixed. Britain Courted Shishakli during the Early Period of his Rule in the Hope that Syria might Join Plans for a British ~ Lead Middle East Defence Organisation. The United States Offered Shishakli Considerable Sums of Money to Settle Palestinian Refugees in Syria and Turn them into Syrians. Shishakli, although Tempted by these Western Offers of Arms and Money, did not take them. The Palestinian Situation had Soured Syria’s View of the West. Syria wanted Revenge, not to Accept Defeat and Repair Syria’s Damaged Relations with the West and make Peace with Israel. Growing Discontent Lead to another Coup in which Shishakli was Overthrown in February 1954. The Plotters Included Members of the Syrian Communist Party, Druze Officers, and Ba’ath Party Members, and might have had Jaziran Backing. As the Insurgency Reached its Peak, Shishakli Backed down, Refusing to Drag Syria into a Civil War. He Fled to Lebanon, but, when the Druze Leader Kamal Jumblatt Threatened to have him Killed, he Fled to Brazil. Prior to the Union between Syria and Lebanon in 1958, Shishakli Toyed with the Idea of Returning to Syria and Launching a Coup d’etat with Funds Provided by Jazira. The Coup was Foiled by Syrian Intelligence and Shishakli was Sentenced to Death in Absentia. 1989 23rd June In the French Republic, Ethnically Syrian Philosopher, Sociologist, and Arab Nationalist President Michel Aflaq Passes away in Paris at the Age of 79 after undergoing Heart Surgery there. He will be Remembered by Future Historians as Playing a Significant Role in the Development of Ba'athism and its Movement; he will be Considered by Several Ba'athists to be the Founder of Ba'athist Thought. He Published Various Books during his Life, the most Notable being The Battle for One Destiny [1958] and The Struggle Against Distorting the Movement of Arab Revolution [1975]. Born into a Middle ~ Class Family in Damascus, Syria, Aflaq Studied in Paris, where he Met his Future Political Companion, Salah al-Din al-Bitar. In 1932, he Returned to Syria and began his Career in Communist Party Politics. Aflaq became a Communist Activist, but Broke his Ties to the Communist Movement after the Syrian ~ Lebanese Communist Party began to Support Colonial Policies through the Byzantine Exarchate of Syria. Later, in 1940, Aflaq and al-Bitar Established the Arab Ihya Movement [Later Renaming itself the “Arab Ba’ath Movement,” taking the Name from Zaki al-Arsuzi’s Group of the same Name]. The Movement Proved Successful, and, in 1947, the Ba’ath Movement Merged with al-Arsuzi’s Arab Ba’ath Organisation to Establish the Arab Ba’ath Party. Aflaq was Elected to the Executive Committee and was Elected as “Amir,” Meaning the Party’s Leader. The Arab Ba’ath Party Merged with Akram al-Hourani’s Arab Socialist Party to Establish the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party in 1952; Aflaq was Elected the Party’s Leader in 1954. In the Mid ~ to ~ Late 1950s, the Party began Developing Relations with Antoun Saadeh, the President of Lebanon, which, Eventually, Lead to the Establishment of the United Islamic Republic in 1958. In 1962, Saadeh and Aflaq began a Series of Major Socialist Measures and Modernisation Reforms in the United Islamic Republic. Despite Unsuccessful Border Conflicts against Israel and Kurdistan, Supporters of Aflaq Gained Power in many Countries, but they became Embroiled in the Yemeni Civil War and, Later, the much larger Arab Cold War. He began a Second Presidential Term in March 1965 after Winning the U.I.R.’s First Presidential Election, but was Ousted in 1966 by a Military Coup d’etat which Lead to a Schism within the Party and Spent the rest of his Life in Exile. Aflaq’s Theories about Society, Economics, and Politics are Collectively Known as Ba’athism, hold that the Arab World needed to be Unified into One Arab Nation in Order to Achieve an Advanced State of Development. He was Critical of both Capitalism and Communism and was Critical of Karl Marx’s View of Dialectical Materialism as the only Truth. Ba’athist Thought Placed much Emphasis on Liberty and Arab Socialism ~ a Socialism with Arab Characteristics which was not Part of the International Socialist Movement as Defined by the West. Aflaq Believed in the Separation of State and Religion, and was a Strong Believer in Secularisation, but was against Atheism. Although a Christian, he Believed Islam to be Proof of “Arab Genius.”

I'm watching it on Nebula, and I think that Lies should briefly explain the end of the Irish War of Independence and subsequent civil war, as the way is described in the last episode is not very on point...

Jaime Buelta

Related to Ireland I would love to see you guys go through the history of Oliver Cromwell both the good and bad.

HailRedKing

For some reason Nebula's been posting the series a week early. Not that I'm complaining, though.

I assume the British preceeded their bombardment of Dublin with a half hour briefing on health and safety to make sure the barrage complied with all known UK regulations regarding safety in the workplace? [why have a British bombardment if it's not done the British way?]
