SUSPIRIA (1977) *REACTION* FIRST TIME WATCHING!

We're sat for a spell-binding first time watch of Suspiria. This nightmarish movie took us on a whirlwind of unsynced lips, dancing hips, flips, dips, and colorful trips. These witches are working behind the scenes to make sure nothing is what it seems. 🔮✨🩰🗡️🪞
Also special shout out to "pumpkins" for really recognizing Joan Bennett.

This is on my top 5 favorite horror films. Fun fact Madame Blanc is played by the BRILLIANT Joan Bennett aka Elizabeth Stoddard from the phenomenal Dark Shadows. See Argentos Inferno, the sequel to this film.

If you guys haven't seen Deep Red (1975) yet by Argento you ABSOLUTELY need to see it, it's a giallo mastepiece and one of his best films overall.

My first comment as an official Petty Pumpkin! I have really been missing out on the full reactions. “Suspiria” was an early horror film for me, and it left a lasting impression. Here, we have the late, great Joan Bennett in her final film role. What’s interesting is the similarities between this movie and “Dark Shadows”, which Bennett also starred in. Victoria Winters arrived by train from New York to an eerie, Gothic house while carrying a letter sent to her under mysterious circumstances, and here Suzy Bannion mirrors that opening from the classic TV series. Bennett’s character, Madame Blanc, is very much like Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, and even has a creepy nephew!
As you can tell, I’m a “Dark Shadows” fan.
I’ve often wondered if Dario Argento wanted Cloris Leachman to play the part of Miss Tanner. The actress he employed strongly reminds me of her, only after being injected with a butch super serum.
I don’t know what they were spiking Suzy’s wine with, but I could use a double to battle my insomnia!
It’s rather amazing that Suzy, given the fact she is portrayed as a helpless damsel, manages to be a Final Girl. She definitely needed to put some wheels on them heels and ride on out of that school.
What really makes “Suspiria” work for me are the visuals, which are a feast for the eyes. The cinematography draws you in and absorbs you in the most unsettling way. I literally had an involuntary chill while watching y’all’s reaction. Oh, and Goblin’s soundtrack absolutely slaps the house down.

Italian Giallos are definitely a subgenre that not everyone is keen to due to the ADR. However, there are so many campy, colourful, and visually pleasing ones. If you are looking for more by Argento, I would recommend Tenebre. So 80s and fun!

Suspiria is part one of Argento's Three Mothers trilogy, along with Inferno and Mother of Tears. All three are worth watching, but Mother of Tears isn't as good as the first two. Also, Jessica Harper played Janet in the Rocky Horror Picture Shoe sequel, Shock Treatment. Oh, and Wes, that sweater is GORGEOUS!

Another 1970s movie you should watch/react to is “The Legend of Hell House”. Have a wonderful week, Petty Pumpkins!

I love the score of this movie. A remake came out awhile back and I snubbed it for awhile. That was a mistake. The remake was awesome, I was just so used to the 70s vibe.

I think maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind to watch this film. The soundtrack stressed me out, and honestly who needs more stress in these times. I have been one giant ball of anxiety and stress since November 6th. The movie didn't make a lot of sense, which admittedly was a me problem since I slowly stopped paying attention to anything except Chey's constant frustration with the characters. That was hilarious and the absolute best part of watching this movie. 😂

I had to Google the blue eyes storyteller, Udo Kier, and he’s been in a ton of movies and tv shows. I knew I recognized him.

Je suis le plus heureux des hommes. (I can’t never be happier) it was huge in all Europe at the time - I remember my mother turned off the television because the trailer of the movie running on I was only 5. I saw it later in the early 90s. Really made its mark. For me the film itself is witchy. It’s a real red celebration.

I’ve never seen Suspiria (I’ll watch it first along with y’all!) but another great Argento movie is Profondo Rosso/Deep Red. It’s a classic giallo with some really interesting visuals (tho I readily admit there are some scenes that have aged poorly and it’s not a perfect film). Still a really good movie and an Argento classic ❤️
