As his father's companion more than his son, Julien is thrust into a premature maturity, striving to maintain their bond and understand the world around him. His primary goal is to preserve his relationship with his father despite the challenges it brings. He lost his mom the year before, and it has significantly changed his father, who has given him no room to mourn.
Secretly, Julien is more aware of his father’s deteriorating condition than he admits, which influences his desperate efforts to keep their family united. Over the course of the story, he matures significantly, forced by circumstances to handle responsibilities far beyond his years.
Julien's sense of humor remains typical of a boy his age, providing some normalcy to his otherwise unstable environment. His days are largely shaped by his dad’s decisions, leaving him little control over his own routine. Ultimately, Julien represents a resilient spirit facing overwhelming odds with a mixture of childlike hope.
Julien is still very childlike, and while often facing stressful moments, he is an optimist and often finds himself smiling and laughing when he least expects it.
