I have a lot of respect for Retro-kun after this episode! I was nodding and so with what he was saying this week! Good for him! That is really cool with the tie-in on Tsukuba, too! I hadn’t considered that! I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought that with Sudo. And yeah, I thought that, too; that you HAD to know Hokuo would have gotten close to the Final, if not in it! I’m 100% with you on that front! I love the Empress’s description of it! And Nishida’s sister as Retro-kun’s girlfriend was SUCH a surprise! I love it! I hope they’re everywhere and Nishida can adjust! XD Yeaaaaaahhhh, the girls have not made many excuses as to losing - or at least, not to the extent as Tsutomu and Taichi, so definitely projection in that moment! I love the concept of Chihaya combining styles! Yessss, and making it her own; I think that’s her next step, but we shall see! I agree on the combo working for her! I’m super hyped as well! Thank you for the comment!

Yes! It’s interesting the way that tone is emphasized so much with ‘relation’ to the speaker! That is a great point to bring out about that use of the wordage in the dialogue against Chihaya and Kana so good point through this - thanks for noting that in the comments!

I really don't want to pull the "cultural card" again, lol, but the whole "but" thing is a cultural thing. Well, it's also a linguistics issue too. In Japan, as you probably know, there is a casual way to speak, a formal way as well as an assertive and a submissive way of speaking. Unfortunately, because we don't have that here, when translating it to English you have limited options and it ends up sounding sexist when it is actually more of a maturity issue. It doesn't help that with women it has almost an opposite effect, where speaking in such assertive ways has other implications like loose morality. It's similar to the ore/boku/watashi pronoun use, were we translate it to male and female versions, but it's actually more of a formal, informal and assertive, although that also doesn't quite capture the sentiment or meaning of their usage.

I never thought I would say this, but Retro-kun was amazing this episode and gained all my respect. Retro-kun been the only one from Hokuo that wanted to take the match seriously, even if they were already garanteed a spot in nationals, and doing something about it was super cool. And I love how while it does parallel a bit Tsukuba always trying to change the order of players it really highlights what is wrong with the way Tsukuba does it; because Retro-kun, for one, did it out of a desire to make the whole team better and push them to do their best, and at the same time, he provided information that the whole team agreed on, even if that information wasn't as accurate as he might have lead them to believe; while Tsukuba, both times, has tried to change the order of players out of a selfish desire to either show-off to his brothers or improve alone without proper consideration to what was best for the team as a whole, and did it behind everyone's backs and without their consent instead of trying to convince them that it was the right course of action. It's an interesting parallel. No, I agree, the moment we realize that Sudou was going to be the reader for that last game I was thinking that Hokuo was going to have an unfair advantage. And it is sort of a premeditated thing, as Mochida says, when talking about the current president of the club, that he knew that he was going to take the game to relaxed, in a ways that, to me, clearly stated that he looked to bring Sudou as the reader to put pressure in the team and make them take the game seriously. Sure, maybe Mochida couldn't be 100% sure that Hokuo would make it to the finals, but Hokuo is also the best team of their area, so the possibilities were very high at the same time. I feel like Sudou reading that last game shouldn't have been allowed in view of that, and maybe he could have read another game, semi finals or something, if he really wanted the practice. Up to this episode I don't think that I had been able to really understand the appeal of karuta; I mean, sure, it seems fun enough, but aside from that I didn't quite get it. And then, the Empress described it in this episode with such awe, and it hit me square in the chest, just how beautiful karuta is and how amazing it must be to experience it live. Oh my, I laughed so hard at Nishida's sister being Retro-kun's girlfriend because I was NOT expecting that but it fits so well xD I need to see more of them now. Alright, I'll admit that Taichi saying that only the boys weren't allowed to use the word "but" anymore was a little sexist. And yet, if I make memory I don't think I can remember the girls making nearly as many excuses about their loses as the boys, except Tsutomu, have. I can't wait to see Chihaya finding her own style as a mix of both Suou and Shinobu's style! Making her own style, not a copy, that's what I really want for her, and I think being precise as Shinobu but having the keenest ear like Suou is the perfect style for her. Needless to say, I'm really hyped for the next episode and to see how this match ends.
