It's based on the book by Louis Sachar that so many of my generation grew up on, and it's an absolutely fantastic movie that, while being a family film, deals with serious topics like the way society treats "delinquent" children, racism, the prison system, and found family. It's one of my favorite movies of all time- plus Sigourney Weaver [the main character of Alien] has a fantastic role.
