I watched this story live when I was 11 in 1989 and I really loved it. I recorded it onto VHS and watched it several times at least! I was a bit of an Arthurian legends fan already, so the idea that the Doctor was/will/may have been Merlin in his personal future was really cool! My only prior exposure to the Brigadier was the Target novelisations of Day of the Daleks and Inferno, which I had read in the school library!
