Some election thoughts

I filmed this as a video but can’t get it to upload. So, we’re doing text instead.

I don’t publicly talk a lot about politics or current events. Partly because I don’t like to use social media any more than is absolutely necessary for an artist in the 21st century, and partly because if I commented every time some heart wrenching thing happened, every time I was disgusted by a politician or regime or ruling, it would be all I talk about. But I’ve never tried to hide my politics and I figured that someday something would happen that would compel me to make a statement like this, detailing my thoughts or concerns. So here we are.

Like a lot of people, I’m disappointed and angry by the results of the election. I have more words to share on that, but first I want to talk to the supporters of trump and the Republican Party.

I’ve heard a lot of you dismiss the biggest fears of the left. I’ve been assured that women won’t be imprisoned for miscarriages or regularly die waiting for care that’ll never come. That we’ll somehow be able to deport thousands of human beings humanely. That the world won’t become more dangerous, that things won’t get worse for the most vulnerable people. That we’re not heading down a very dark path. I hope you’re right. But please pay attention if you’re not. If you see your friends, your neighbors, your family in peril, pay attention. Whether or not you blame the administration or “bad apples” or whatever for any injustices that unfold or, let’s be honest, continue to unfold over the next four years, pay attention. And when you hear people on the left continuing to express fear and anger, do not dismiss them out of hand. Whether they’re loud or quiet about it, someone you love shares those feelings genuinely. They at least deserve your empathy and your support if it turns out they are right. Your neighbors are not the “enemy from within”. and I have to believe that anyone who is taking the time to read this agrees with that.

Now, I want to turn towards the left. Progressives, Harris supporters, liberals, etc.

It’s not great. And as much as I want to, I can’t tell anyone that you shouldn’t feel helpless right now or even paralyzed by fear. But for anybody with the time, money, and/or privileges of their identity or upbringing, the most vulnerable will need us. Progress happens in good times and in bad, and while we can’t change whoever’s crowned god king, there are genuine ways to affect change in your community. I personally am using this election as a real push to do more in my neighbor and in my city. I don’t think I’m alone. It’s not over. We are not approaching the end of history.

So please please please don’t fall into despair. Don’t give into hate and declare that America deserves whatever it gets. Because my kids don’t deserve the worst outcome. Immigrants and refugees who are just as much a part of America as anyone don’t deserve it. The voters who tried their best don’t deserve it.

A country is just an abstract collection of people; the president does not reveal our “soul”. We’re not facing judgement day. We’re just facing another day in which we’ve gotta do our best.

And as disappointed as I am by the outcome of this election, it doesn’t shake my views of humanity or America. I’m not going to pretend like both sides are basically the same and equally right sometimes. There’s a lot of disinformation and hate. Some people do see marginalized groups as expendable. But…

I still believe that most people are genuine in their efforts to make things better.

And I believe that one way or another, things will get better. Progress is not linear; progress is always possible. In the meantime, I’ll still be trying to make all of you laugh.

Alright. Fuck fascists. Choose peace whenever you can. Bye.

Thanks for this Neil. And thanks as always for your work, we all could use a good laugh right now and The Other End is as reliable a laugh-vector as I’ve found. You and Marissa are good people.

Hey Neil. As one Neil to another, I really appreciate this message. I’m not in the US, but this whole planet is going to be affected. Stay strong. - Neil from across the pond

Thanks for your thoughts. I’ve witnessed the use of commie nazi and fascist an order of magnitude more than I’ve seen self identification of that ethos or even strong alignment. For example I’ve been called both a commie and a Nazi to my face despite having little in common with either of those extremist philosophies. Most of the time I hear someone call someone that it is used as an insult rather than a proper label. I highly doubt even 1% of the nation combined has a belief and/or identity with those ideologies. The server I run is mostly financially focused and we predicted a Harris loss for the same reasons we felt HW bush lost his re-election. I live in a blue state and voter enthusiasm was at an all time low. Politics are cyclical and similar to how the neocons faced internal pressure after losing in 2008 I think Democrat establishment will face internal competition to realign with labor which used to be their most reliable base that definitely has splintered this cycle. I really appreciate your two replies and I’m glad you voted and are expressing your thoughts to your audience. The only way we have unity is if we all can feel safe to speak even when we are the minority opinion.

Thank you. He was oppressed in his birth nation of China and I’m proud of him for getting a near perfect score on his American civics exam and that he now can vote and call himself an American.

Kevin King

Couldn't agree more. The vote demographics have shown pretty conclusively that the blood on the Biden/Harris admin's hands didn't wash off that easily. It's always been ours, the people's burden and responsibility and always will be.

A Harris presidency wouldn’t have saved the world. There’s plenty we should be doing, regardless of who’s in the White House

Neil Kohney

A primary would’ve been nice. But I’m not sure if swing voters were the big issue. The problem was democrat turnout. I think if Harris had run as a progressive, as she has in the past, things would’ve been different. Instead they went with the Clinton handbook. You’re just not gonna get much turnout from the left based on Cheney endorsements. But I don’t want to just play Monday morning quarterback. There will be plenty of real insightful analysis over the next few months into what went wrong

I think it starts locally. People scream and threaten online, but it will change when their neighbors and family start to get deported. We can’t let people slip away and the stories fade. So I would look to communities. Whether that’s political action groups, clubs, your neighborhood, or just friends (online or irl). That’s the foundation we’ve all gotta build/maintain, and then work up from there

Neil Kohney

Regarding the whole “fascist commie nazi” thing, I have conflicting thoughts. I think fascist is not just a thoughtless insult. There are times it is warranted. But as we’ve seen, it’s unlikely to change anyone’s vote. I think this election, like most, boiled down to the economy generally, doubling down on continuity with Bidens administration in specific, and the democrats insistence on gaining just a few more republicans on the fence

Neil Kohney

I’m really sorry to hear about your experience, but that’s amazing to help someone work to become a citizen.

Neil Kohney

❤️ the complete and utter despair on Reddit took me by surprise. I understand feeling shocked and disappointed and even really fucking angry. But shifting to this whole “who should I hate most right now” is not the right play

Neil Kohney

I’m also in a red state. It can be frustrating to see my neighbors voting for policies on the left but politicians on the right. But people are complicated and politics isn’t a math problem (not a simple math problem at least)

Neil Kohney

Good thing I have therapy in 10 minutes 🥲

Thank you for writing this. It’s going to be very hard, but it’s all about keeping going.

Thank you for this. Very well said.

I did the exact same thing at 3 o'clock this morning. I realize that I could probably find a lot of solace there currently, but I cannot deal with even a whiff of toxicity right now-much less the generally large amount on Reddit on any given day. I'm not sure I'll be able to re-download the app any time soon.

Much love from a few of us in south Florida who tried our best. ((Hugs))

This is really what I needed to hear. I uninstalled reddit last night because I was hurting a lot and couldn't stand to be immersed in any more news. Little did I know that I'd get to read exactly what I needed from my favorite comic artist. Thanks for taking the time to write this out. I'm going to really focus on what it means to be a good neighbor and optimism leader for my wife and kids. Thanks, Neil ❤️

I ran a stream on the server I ran last night, had over 100 people watching, 10 guests on, and our straw poll was split pretty evenly. Most of us got along, but whenever terms like commie or fascist or nazi were used in chat, those people would often not be able to convince anyone on their positions. It's become a weasel word which strays from the definition and used to just mean "the other." What I found interesting from having several speakers on, from democrats to independents to republicans was that there was a consensus on inflation and on illegal immigration. I asked for clarity on immigration versus illegal immigration and there was a lot of nuance presented by the speakers, which I haven't been finding in the media. Take my situation, in which this year I was proud to help an immigrant finally take and pass his citizenship test after 13 years in this nation having gone through the legal channels. I was also assaulted by an illegal, from Europe, here in my home state of Colorado. There appears to be no consequences for this assault in which if my legal neighbors would have done it, they would have most likely faced legal and civil penalties and a follow up investigation. So Immigration is being talked about as a binary issue, when I think there's room to talk about how difficult it is to go through the legal path, and the negatives of the illegal path that has been both sizable and notable in my community. If there's one thing having voted in dozens of elections in my lifetime has taught me is that promises are rarely kept, and things don't change overnight. I hope nobody is in despair over last evening, and as someone who has lived in Blue States, Red States, and Swing States I've always found a lot of common ground with my fellow citizens. Thanks for your writeup Neil, I've always liked your writeups and comics!

I wish I had the strength in this moment to be as fair as you are here. My first thoughts as the results rolled in were of frustration and disgust. So much of our political rhetoric has become mired in hate that, as you point out we must realize that perhaps we are just a collection of panicky creatures trying to make the best of the chaos in this world. I WANT to believe that the visceral reactions we see today, tomorrow, but hopefully not every day over the next several years will subside and perhaps shine a light toward the progress that can be possible...but Theoden, King of Rohan, echoes in my mind at this moment: What can men do against such reckless hate? That is what I fear for now, as hate may be more enabled than ever to hurt those that we love. Despite any pettiness in my heart I don't want to see this hate visited upon the marginalized people who may or may not agree with this direction we find ourselves being pointed in. I don't know what the future holds for us...but I do want there to be some good that comes from this. For the moment I see no path that leads anywhere but deeper into this dark and twisted timeline...but maybe we can find that beacon together?

Christian Shoemaker

fucking love you

I think a big issue was harris...really turned off alot of swing voters, very unpopular...so the dems fumbled with that one and didn't have a primary... Regardless still was prob better than trump, but alas here we are...I already live paycheck to paycheck so I just hope things don't get more expensive...

The Senate

Amen. I've been in rough shape today, but I've also come out with a similar outlook as yours. I'm going to do more personally to create the world I want to live in, and the one that my kids will live in. Expecting the government to do that is not a reliable hope. My first stop will be to see what money I can scrounge up and where I can donate it to elevate the country's education system. I believe the smarter this country is, the easier it will be to improve it.

Eric Larson

This is such a comprehensive putting-into-words of the emotional spiral I've felt today that it really could have come from anywhere and been adressed at anyone and would have hit just as hard. Truth is the fight goes on in the background as it always does.
