Yeah you're mistaken. The dad in this movie was such a bitch throughout. The wife had to do everything because he was afraid to stand up to McAvoy's character. From beginning to end, the dad was useless. Even in the end, the little boy had to be the one to kill McAvoy because the dad was so spineless.
