The Expanse S3E8+9 It Reaches Out - Intransigence

Funny how you mentioned it should be a roleplay game..Because that's kinda how The Expanse came about..The writers were originally going to make it a roleplay-like game but after a few test plays with some people they felt it was better or too 'expansive' for just a game and turned it into a book series instead..So the first bits of the first book is actually inspired by their roleplay sessions.. For some Book changes: You may feel like Naomi is always switching sides because she is absorbing a bit of a book character who is supposed to be the chief of security on the Behemoth and if I recall correctly, Tycho's engineer Sam (Samantha\Samara) is now the engineer on the Behemoth and is only seen very briefly in the 1sr season of the show..TV Drummer has by now absorbed most of what Sam was in the books, except for the engineering expertise and Naomi is kinda taking Sam's place as Engineer, because in the book Naomi never leaves the Roci like she does in the show..And because of that, they needed a way for Naomi to go back to the Roci, so they have her feeling at odds with her Belter comrades and 'defect' back to her Inners.. (There's a lot of little character absorptions like this, especially in this season because they crammed the entirety of book 3 into this last half of Season 3..Which is also why it feels like it's going at a break neck speed (Literally for certain Belter racers)..

That’s kinda true it’s just that she’s never even had that accent when she was around belters previously. Also i just don’t like her so most of what she does annoys me

James

Someone having a stronger accent when they go home or are surrounded by their people is totally normal, though.

So What We Doing Wednesday. 3rd Episode Of Dexter Just Kidding.

I’m happy you brought up Naomi’s accent, it feels fake like she’s putting it on to fit in, she also makes me very uneasy I’m not really a fan of her. At least we got another 2 episodes of Amos being my favorite character in the show, I NEED HIS BACKSTORY!

James

Totally. It also reminds of japanese a little in that you can something like "No sasa" and it would be "You don't know", but like "No sasa ke?" and it would be like "You don't know?" sort of like having 'desu' or 'desuka' at the end of some statements in japanese changes it from a statement to a question. I know that isn't exactly how it works but the language from the show and the books together make for an interesting little constructed language. I have found over my numerous, probably too many viewings, of the show that I just understand Belter and it feels rad. I probably couldn't translate but I would understand.

The Belter language is so interesting, and I love how you can kind of see how some of their words derive from Earther words we can recognise. Like how ‘Ke’ seems to mean ‘understand’ as in ‘sasa ke’ and how they end their sentences with ‘ke?’ to say, ‘you get it?’. It always makes me think of the way the Scottish use the word ‘Ken’ (as in ‘I’m tired, ye ken?’ meaning ‘I’m tired, you understand?’) and I wonder if the writers deliberately came up with a play on that word for the Belters to use (seems like too much of a coincidence otherwise). There are so many words like that that the Belters use and it’s fun looking for words that mean the same thing in different languages and cultures in our world.

I love how they do Miller here - the combo of Thomas Jane's twitchy performance and the post-production "glitches" make him so eerie. (Also did anyone else notice when he looked in the mirror...his reflection suddenly appeared a second or two late, as if he's some kind of AI populating slightly slower than real time...never noticed it until now). Also, if it wasn't evident before...you don't cross Amos...

Michael Celia

Indeed, I think they did an admirable job of keeping coherent while also watching the axe coming down. Still a small miracle the show came back.

James W.

Yeah especially this part of the season. The creators thought it was going to be canceled... And well it was canceled! So they stuffed a whole book into the end of a season so the story could reach a satisfying stopping point. Stuff gets spend up and a proper explanation gets cut to save time

Cody Taylor

On another note, I don't think you guys are shitting on it. I have seen reactors miss waaaaaaay more than you and gave up on the show. Everyone is allowed an opinion but not liking The Expanse is one I can't get behind, to me it just means they have a shallow meter for what is "good". Part of me feels they are wrong a little dumb, unfair but fight me I guess. This show is dense all the way throughout. Lots of us who love it are huge nerds where a lot of the jargon and story beats are familiar from a life of reading, watching, and playing content with similar threads to the Expanse, so it comes easier. I have only recently finally started reading the books and I am kinda of glad to have seen the series first. If feels like the difference between watching a movie like "Saving Private Ryan" or or reading a book that is an account directly from a soldier that was there; it is different but the same. Some of the worst offenders of the Expanse's "Um, actually...." contingent have also obsessively digested the show and novels to the point where they can't seen to fathom someone who misses things that they may have misunderstood on their first watch or even their first read. Those people are also a little wrong and dumb as well, they can also "fight me". Keep em coming, I literally have a little fist pump every time you folks upload because I know it will be a good watch.

Naomi switching her voice when she’s around belters is called code switching

Mo

my favorite ep this season is 3x08. just pure chaos

Mo

I feel spoiled, Daredevil and the Expanse, and eventually Arcane ssn2. We don't deserve the bounty y'all are giving us. Edit: "Sasa" and Sasa Ke" are belter creole, it means to know something (to know a fact / know how to do something) In the way Naomi was saying it she was telling Drummner "To sasa im!" means "You know him" as in Drummer knows Jim and he isn't capable of that. There are a lot of Belter terms that are defined. Pampa is alike slang for old man or uncle, it is like a term of respect. I am african american and I might call someone Unc' or Auntie that isn't related to me to show they are like family or in some way, or maybe in a mocking tone to indicate they are acting like an old head. Not sure if links work here but here is a reddit thread about about Belter creole. https://www.reddit.com/r/LangBelta/comments/f6ffnd/englishlangbelta_dictionary/
