And if all people were incapable of forming hatreds over petty differences/happenstance/disputes then I think the world would be a much better place. I agree with you that single moments don't usually define someone themselves, but a few isolated instances of interaction can make the difference between people being amiable and hating each other.

We have literally never heard him state that in the whole series so far, the only reason we know is because we heard it in neko shiro which was from Hanekawa's POV. So when he just let that detail slip to Ougi randomly, it surprised even him himself. The fact that there was some big event that changed Araragi during his first year of high school is also something first brought up by Hanekawa in Neko Shiro and only now have we gotten to see what that was.
