Doctor Who 5x10 Vincent and the Doctor - Early Access CLEAN

Ooh, I loved this one. I mentioned in the outro that it is SO telling how good the writing, acting and stories are, if an episode like this - featuring a character we've only JUST met - can be so impactful, so emotional.

Doctor Who continues to surprise me constantly. Goodness... I know I adored David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and Donna, but can I just say how hugely IMPRESSED I am with Matt Smith and it's just continuing to grow. He's a wonderful Doctor and suits this role SO well.

What a wonderful episode. I love it.\

Doctor Who 5x10 Vincent and the Doctor - Early Access CLEAN

This is one of my top 3 favorite episodes of all time. I’m pretty sure I’ve cried every song viewing of it. The writing is phenomenal. Vincent is done so well and how they connect it to Amy’s pain.. I’ve been looking forward to you seeing this one because I thought it would be one you would also connect with.

I really love this one. It makes me so every time I see that scene with Vincent in the future seeing his work being admired. I find myself getting emotion at that part sometimes when I see it. Such a great episode. One of the best ones!

Larissa Reimer

What?! Come on.... That is ridiculous 😔 Thank you, Neil. It was such a beautiful episode. One of my very, very favourites 💜 Gosh, I love this Doctor. He's so gentle.

I just saw that those Just Stop Oil morons have targeted Van Gogh's paintings again. Because throwing soup at paintings is really gonna solve the problem right guys!? 🤦 Anyway, I love this episode and I also loved your reaction to it. Thanks Juliette.

💜 the mixture of humour and emotions is perfect! I am constantly surprised at what this show continues to deliver us. It's so, so perfect 🥰

Juliette Gaming

Honestly, it was beautiful. One of my favourites ever!!

Juliette Gaming

Told you this one would get you. A phenomenal episode with a wonderful turn from the brilliant Tony Curran as Vincent. Another entry in the list of many reason 10 and 11 is the best written era of Doctor Who.

The Rising Ape

This episode always makes me bawl my eyes out, but it definitely is one of my favorite who episodes! I also love that i can cry, and laugh at these episodes with you.

When the Doctor put his own image up on his viewer-mirror-thingy, the picture that came out was that of William Hartnell, the first Doctor. The second picture was the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

In 2013, a lost Van Gogh was found in Norway, three years after this episode aired. Link below to see it. In particular, look at the top left corner. There, right there, is what looks like a small blue house. A small blue box, if you like. Yeah, it gave me the shivers too. https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/lost-van-gogh-painting-unveiled-in-amsterdam-54109

I agree as with the trend, but not so much as with the chicken-lizard. It reminds me very much of the mythological Basilisk (the classic one, not the Harry Potter rip-off) and that goes together well with not being able to look at it (orin this case see it) directly. And as mythological-like creatures go that are lonely and frightened and the Doctor eventually feeling compassion for them. That is also a trend...

Oliver

No one is immune to the Van Gogh episode. We are all crying.

A trend I've noticed: in the historical episodes, the better the historical figure featured, the less interesting the monster. The Gelth, for example, while perfectly serviceable, were not exactly exciting, while Simon Callow as Charles DIckens was (to use a word) fantastic. Same with the Carrionites and Shakespeare. This is quite possibly the best historical figure in any DW episode, so much so that the monster was almost annoying. If the big chicken-lizard (who's only purpose was to get the Doctor motivated) had buggered off in the first few minutes, the beautiful exploration of Van Gogh's genius and agony, not to mention the heart-wrenching ending, would have been scarcely affected. It was a good chicken-lizard, to be fair. Of all the chicken-lizards I've have ever seen, it rates in the top ten. Okay, top twelve.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam I'd say do it - it's such an experience. The man was truly one of if not the greatest painters of all time. I've never been to the Musée d'Orsay myself so can't compare it. Also worth dropping into the Rijksmuseum next door as it's full of beautiful works from other Dutch artists.

Danny Roberts

This is just one of my favourite episodes. It really captures the essence of a classic Doctor Who episode. Back when the show first started, the idea was that trips to the future would teach us about science, while journeys to the past would explore history. This episode does exactly that and that is why it is beautiful I also love it because the portrayal of the invisible Krafayis serves as a powerful metaphor for mental illness, particularly depression. Just as the Krafayis is unseen by everyone except Vincent, mental illness often goes unnoticed by others, despite its profound impact on the person suffering from it. The Doctor and Amy cannot perceive the creature, reflecting how those around someone with depression may struggle to understand their inner pain.

This episode never fails to make me cry 😭 These writers can make us cry over a monster's death, and add to the heart-wrenching emotional roller-coaster by taking Vincent to see his work in the future and how many people love his art. One of the best episodes in my opinion 🥰💓

Melanie

I meant the scene with vincent in his artshow, but also the very last scene with the doctor's speech about making a difference, is also fantastic. I love this episode's depiction of mental illness, too. People actually fear it, and turn against people for it out of that fear. You can also have great days and horrible days, and that even having that fantastic moment with Amy and the Doctor, didn't change that Vincent was still mentally ill, and took his own life. It made a difference for sure, but sometimes the bad patches are unbeatable and the urge to give in, is too strong despite the good patches :(

Oh my god I just can’t with this episode holy shit 😅 i cry to doctor who almost every episode sure but this episode every single time 😭😭 im still crying for god sakes 😂. The loss of Rory still weighs on amy so much it’s hard to watch. Yeah he honestly just kept going and used the immense feelings that bring him down , turned them around and used it to shine a light on the universe that exposed such beauty he was simply fantastic. Doctors slip up saying Amy and Rory did actually make me laugh a little as i keep forgetting about that part and it shakes me every time 😂 thanks for the videos again! Have a good afternoon!

Me too! Just like I have 3+ favorite doctors. These lists are bigger on the inside!

I'm pretty sure at this point my top 10 episodes has more than 10 episodes in it hah. But this is up there with the greatest! The end gets me every time.

"To me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular, great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived."

OverWims

This is a special one. Written by writer and director Richard Curtis, in tribute to his sister Belinda. She loved Vincent's work, and very sadly took her own life. Bill Nigh, also reportedly admires Vincent's work and the man. The speech he makes at the end about Vincent's impact on the world, was apparently not scripted. I read that he ad libbed it when asked to speak about Vincent, from the heart.

Daryl

I absolutely love the ending to this episode

Gareth Roberts

Omg the ending to this episode is so damn beautiful, with such a beautiful song choice ♡

x_Rhi_x

There is an alternate ending to the 10th Doctor episode "The Unicorn and the Wasp" where Donna and the Doctor visit Agatha Christie on her deathbed and they show her the book from the year 5 billion to make her realize her books' value. But that one was a little bit cheesy and I'm glad that they cut it out because that left this idea for Vincent. In this episode it is just so beautifully done.

Oliver

And I've used that "pile of bad things, pile of good things" saying to cheer up friends in need once or twice since.

Paul Hess

This has one of my favorite ever sequences in the entirety of Doctor Who (you know which sequence), and several other awesome scenes mixed in because one great sequence isn't enough. Wow. I've been waiting for this and I can't wait to watch it with you

Paul Hess

Omg yes!!! One of the most beautiful episodes of the entire show. After this episode aired on the BBC they had a graphic with a suicide prevention number for people to call. I love how realistically and tactfully they deal with mental health in this too, it's not something The Doctor can fix in Vincent and he knows that. This sums up for me why I love Eleven so much too, the empathy his Doctor has is just so beautiful, he's very sweet with Vincent and how he comforts Amy at the end warms my heart Amazing episode!

Michael Harrop

Yay, Doctor-Wednesday and the van-Gogh-Episode! I had a long day, just the thing I need right now.
