I knew it would happen because I felt Morty was changing all along this season, being more impulsive, angry and also at several occasions he gave up on Rick when before he would have never done it. So to have him going crazy and shouting at everyone, letting that rage expressing itself, it was not a surprise. I was more shocked by the fact he killed that guy : Morty killed before, but it was someone threatening entire planets, here that one didn't want to participate to the purge and was just hurt by Morty's words. And after that, he killed so many guys…
I know the writers love to play with Morty's moral compass but here I have the impression that they destroyed it. And Rick felt it, that's why he lied at the end, to reassure Morty. Rick, on the other hand, did the right things several times : he was disgusted by the purge, he was okay to help the girl without Morty insisting too much, he was worried for Morty being in rage, he helped the girl at the end against the richs without asking anything in exchange, he reassured Morty… Oh, and Jerry ? They are treating him so badly, and his life is so sad, I can't take it anymore.

I think that during that time of the purge, anyone who is forced to go outdoors that is a death sentence. Morty knows that he can't defend himself, he was just made aware of it earlier outside. Luckily they found a lighthouse who was willing to give them shelter. But technically after listening to the story, Morty was about to be kicked out (into certain death) because why, there was no rational reason that he could understand. Morty really couldn't handle the situation ever since the start and then he was to be thrown outside again into that world he couldn't handle. Being threatened with death and backed into a corner that is when Morty turned a corner and he pushed the guy. Let's summarize, Morty is in deep way over his head. He doesn't have the capacity to handle any one of the sequence of events happening one after another. He couldn't figure out what to do and so he defaulted into the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans" Morty is so inexperienced at this he can only do "zero" or 100, there is no in-between. So either he will die himself or he will kill everyone.

You're right, maybe to see Rick like disturbed Morty a lot, but I truly think that the writers are making a progression with Morty here, through the entire season. First, for sure, with the fact that he began by being forced to kill someone to save entire planets and here he kills someone without wanting it, and then a lot of people by reaaaally wanting it. But, also, see that episode and compare it to the episode in which he wanted to help that "cloud" thing and ended by killing him : in both cases Morty wanted to save a random person because he saw that person in distress, and in both cases he was betrayed at some point. He was sad and disturbed that he had to kill the "cloud" when right here he let the rage scream "let's kill her, let's kill her !".

Rick and Ice-T bonded over that saying to Morty to take it easy and chuckling. (It is green room banter. Rattled nerves before going on a live performance making Morty snap.) (insert pondering emoji face)

(I've been shot in the liver Morty, this is the hardest-working liver in the galaxy Morty.) They are now cast away on a planet in the middle of a purge event. (Hey thanks for the wiper fluid, you're pretty nice old timer. Yes I am..., for now. He said humorously. Humorously in that both parties knew that he would be participating in a free-for-all purging in just a few minutes after the sun goes down. With a wink and a nod it is understood that death is on the menu tonight. It is the dark humor of an-ti-ci-pa-tion! Pre-bloodlust banter.) Morty has to help Rick hobble out of that burning house, and then a mob comes for them... and there is no hope of escape.
