The microphones popping in at the top of the screen happened more back then, as these episodes were all filmed live in front of a TV audience, and so holding the boom/mic above the actors for so long could result in slips. Technology wasn't as good back then too, obviously. And then throw in the height of John Cleese, and these things were going to happen from time to time!

When this first ran on TV Fawlty Towers themed restaurants became popular. A short questionnaire was filled out before hand.

Yeah they would, but I think they should watch phoenix nights first. That’s been requested a few times. Hopefully it will be on a poll soon 🤞🏼

There's an interesting side fact in the dialogue. When Sybil was speaking about her mother's fear of things, she was actually describing John Cleese's mother (dialogue which obviously he wrote!). If you watch this clip you'll understand!! https://youtu.be/UefOyRQF7fw?si=XZ5DaciBw6NlWN2p

Most people, when digging a hole for oneself, only dig so deep, climb out, and throw away the spade. Basil comes back with an excavator!

It's strange to think that back then there was a rule that unmarried couples couldn't book a room together.

This was a masterclass in YouTube reaction from Mike and Jess. They actually made one of the funniest TV shows funnier. Every pause was justified, and the comments were pure gold. Even the confession from Mike about playing classical music in the background during family dinner. Pretentious? Moi? 🤣. Loved this and will watch it again and again. Thank you 👏.

Be interesting to see what you think of the next episode, as it often divides people (not in a controversial way, dont worry 😅)

Great reaction guys, I grew up watching re-runs of this in the 90’s and it’s crazy to hear you having the same discussions and feelings about this show almost 50 years after it first aired and 30 years after I first watched it, the true meaning of timeless! Thanks as always

“A word of advice…. If you’re going to grope a girl, have the gallantry to stay in the room with her while you’re doing it, hmmm?”
The greatest line by Sybil in the whole of Fawlty Towers!

Iv always maintained Communication Problems is my favourite, but this one is right up there.
In reality I cannot rate any episode less than 8 out of 10. And I can't say that about any other sitcom

My father had a 'nervous breakdown' when I was 12 years old in the mid 70s and had to retire from one of the best paid jobs in the world. We moved to the countryside and into poverty, but his mental breakdown was considered so shameful that my mother had to pretend to the local grammar school that he had had a life-threatening heart attack.

Agree totally when it comes to social situations. The moment someone tells you they are involved in psychiatry the immediate response is ‘oh you will be examining everything I say from now on’. lol
I can’t imagine how predictable that response must be for anyone involved in the profession when all they are doing is engaging in a social gathering just being normal human beings.

Basil is actually based on a real person he and Connie were staying in his hotel during filming Monty python, all the rest left due to the hotel owners attitude, but John and Connie stayed and made a fortune because of it!
BTW Joan Sanderson and Prunella scales played mother & daughter in another sitcom called ‘after henry’

The one episode where Sybil takes centre stage and we don’t see much of Polly, Manuel or the Major. Prunella Scales was fantastic in the role.

That's such a misread, Basil is purposely written to have a very snobbish attitude toward people he sees as common or lower-class. Both the undercover officer in S1 and the guy in this one are intentionally portrayed as dressing, speaking and acting as what Basil would consider common or lower-class

I checked my emails and the watery fowls title cracked me up .My dad was constantly quoting I know nothing when I was a kid 😂. I love Sybil so much . This episode features the worst Australian accent I’ve heard but I’m happy to be corrected haha

He is threatened by "manly" men which is why he tries to put them down. He did the same thing with the Spanish speaking undercover officer in S1.
And yes, he did think the male doctor was 2 doctors purely because in his mind there was no way a mere woman could be a doctor. See how his attitude changes to simpering and grovelling when he thinks there are people of 'class' around?

I actually work in Psychiatry myself. It’s true that people used to be wary of speaking to psychiatrists as they were scared that their every word would be analysed, even in social settings.
