The Pacific ep 6

Comments

You know the Marine’s commander on Guadalcanal, Col ‘Chesty’ Puller? Basilone puked in his trash can in Australia. I was reminded of this story when you talked about people being squeamish about seeing blood. Well, that wasn’t Chesty. He was at a forward position, way too close to the front, and Col Puller came across a Marine who’d been wounded in the neck and was choking on his own blood and tongue. Without missing a beat, Chesty grabbed the man’s tongue, opened some big safety pin he had or got and pinned the soldier’s tongue to his shirt. Just one push of the needle, straight through. The man was found by medics and fully recovered. It’s gross but it saved his life.

In one of the episodes, not this one, you mentioned you ‘hated to see the look on their faces’ after a battle. Like, when the sun was coming up and, though the Marines had held their ground, it came at great cost and the men were just staring around unseeing. This look has a name, believe it or not. It’s called the ‘1000 yard stare.’ A yard is pretty close to a meter. So, a stare fixed on some point way out in the distance. Like, the eyes aren’t seeing the horror right in front of them. It was common among front line troops. A mixture, I think, of exhaustion, horror, fear and wariness.

FO = FORWARD ONSERVER. Basically he's going to do a reconnaissance of an upcoming area without putting your main military force jeopardy/danger.

Poisoning a water source is actually a war crime.

As a Marine, thank you. You watching a series like this helps us veterans feel understood.
