Dad Reacts to Daft Punk - Discovery

Comments

And the reason I say it’s overdrive is do to the bit rate that it’s processing at, try using distortion on a guitar then try it overdrive and change the bit rate❤️

I just wanna say as an audio engineer, the “distortion” you hear on short circuit is actually overdrive. They way if boost the frequency instead of the signal, much ❤️

Song @ minute 55 of the video to be exact. Been looking all day and I can’t find yet

I need that Chromeo song you guys were playing !! It says “ we fell in love in the summer”. Also I’m recently subscribed to the Patreon!! Makes work go by watching these videos !

Alive 2007 could be a good album by Daft Punk to listen to with no stop seeing that it was a live set

Okay, finished watching this video. AH! Incredible. Daft punk is so fun/innovative/incredible. Glad you enjoyed this, Kevin! And glad you both spent time listening to this together. The sampling is sensational. You both bring me so much joy with how much you love and appreciate music. I can completely relate to the excitement and joy it brings <3

Kelsey

Just started the video and I am HYPE FOR THIS! Can't wait to listen to you listen to this gem of an album :)

Kelsey

It's funny you guys requesting daft punk come back to make a music video for one of the tracks when the whole album is the soundtrack to an anime movie, which was made as a 'visual companion' to the album. It's fucking awesome and you can find it on youtube. Super creative and really elevates the music!

Ben Garside

Now I can't wait for porter robinsons nurture

Jayden

"there's one song on here that's too long" *glances at camera* lmao

Andy K

I'm biased, i love every single track on this album, even Too Long.

David Sonne

will you put the reaction to the face to face sampling into the final cut?

you should definitely watch the movie they made from this album, you briefly mentioned it in the video: Interstella 5555. definitely frames the whole album in a new way!

Alex Shadrake

the funny thing about veridis quo is I always read that as “Very disco” and i’m not sure if that was intentional, but after hearing you guys says it im questioning everything

kai

Hey Max! I love Tom :) - Kevin

TTT

too long is the perfect ending!!!

Jorge Campos Jr.

Kevin will boogie to Tom Misch-Geography

this makes me so happy seeing yall dance the way i do, brings me new joy to songs that i had already reached their peak in my mind. Thank you for doing what you do!!!

etgima

Even though it is a Daft Punk track, Todd Edwards is credited massively on the production of Face to Face, who also did the singing here, and on Fragments of Time (with chorus sample chops on that track too). That sampling technique is his style and DP were fans of him (even got a shout out on “Teachers” from Homework). And all of his tracks are little sample chops from different songs, he’s a NJ and UK Garage legend fr!

Really happy with this video, one of my favourite albums. Would love to see some more electronic music- new skrillex (Quest for fire) and Fred agains actual life series would be good to dig into

Ben Hogan

^as these fellas said…. Lonerism!!!

Gavin Camp

I think it would be a good time to do Lonerism!

Jamison Prosser

absolutely this!! It's incredible to hear how they combine songs from their albums!

Lonerism!

Drapsol

I third this. That’s my favorite album of all time, so many all time moments where three songs are playing at once and you cant even tell

Jake Purdue

So happy you guys did this. You have to listen to alive 2007. They combine all of these songs and they sound even better. It’s a live concert with them remixing their own stuff. Absolutely best album for cardio or working out and my favorite album of all time

Jake Purdue

I second this, there's a very good edit of Alive 2007 on YouTube called ALIVE 2021 - EPILOGUE, it's from a user named "Ghoulie" you don't even necessarily have to do a YouTube video for it, but it's truly a mastercrafted performance.

You guys should do alive 2007 and 1997 the full video version, if you guys want to do some visuals like the Frank Coachella you couldn’t do

Andrew Lodge

Short circuit was a song from their first album 4 years prior but they didn’t drop it until discovery

Andrew Lodge

Romanthony is the singer on one more time & too long, Todd Edwards is on face to face

Andrew Lodge

Album tracklist was designed around the film I think, which is why too long is at the end

Andrew Lodge

Thank you!

Tracy Ware

❤️ I think this is the one album you should have introduced your dad to a visual like Interstella 5555. The music would have *SO* much more meaning along with the videos. Still amazing. Nobody has done a Discovery album in this depth ❤️

Tracy Ware

so cool to see y’all talking about your love for sampling. face to face is one of my favorite songs ever but especially one of my favorite sample-heavy songs. i’d love for y’all to react to Since I Left You by The Avalanches because it’s an entire album of only samples. there’s so many samples that they don’t even know how many they used (anywhere between 900-3000). it may be difficult to film a reaction because it’s basically nonstop with seamless transitions but if y’all could make it work i think it’d blow Kevin’s mind.

Christian Arrieta

Also, even the drums in Face to Face are a sample. There are a bunch of people that are trying to discover all the samples in this track, and currently there are only a few small snippets that are left to discover, someone has nearly perfectly recreated the full song by recreating the samples.

Tyler Callagher

Fun fact, the name of this album is based around the track Veridis Quo which sounds like Very Disco, which when switched around, is Discovery.

Tyler Callagher

Face to Face is my favorite song on this album but every Daft Punk song and album is a masterpiece

I checked out gogo penguin and I spent all night listening to it with a friend and im going to see them live in Brooklyn next week. thank you guys for the rec!

Patrick Daniel

Now if this ends up being a move into more dance related reactions, a sit down with Justice's Cross would be glorious – not just for it being such a banger & another French double act, but how much influence it had on the whole music scene 👀

John Brown

Something about Us is my “favourite”song. A song about love not fulfilled. Knocked me off my feet the first time hearing it

Mclovin Legend

Now that Kevin is into more of the electronic stuff I'd love to see a reaction to Four Tet - There Is Love In You or Burial - Untrue. The 2 albums that did it for me and would genuinely be interested in the discussion about the different type of electronic music like this from the UK

Aaron Edmonds

For sure best DP album. No misses

Steijn Fraser

so happy this album got covered! such a fun time watching you two listening to it. this album is a CORNERSTONE of electronic music and many of the most influential artists in this sound grew up on this. (ex: Zedd, Porter Robinson, Madeon, etc.) Discovery is to electronic fans, what Kanye's Bear Trilogy is for Rap fans. It's just super nostalgic feel good music. a fun fact about "Verdis Quo" it's not actually french, it's supposed to read like "Very Disco". Whenever I hear that song, I always think back to laying in bed in my childhood bedroom. i'd kill for you two to listen to "Nurture" by Porter Robinson. It's the perfect album for the spring season, and it's doing to electronic music in the 2020s what discovery did for it in the 2000s. magical experiences.

wallace prower

Have to do Donuts soon now, especially if Kevin is getting into instrumentals!

Tyler Handy

Too Long is the classic 12" House SIngle kind of track, an extended dance remix of their own song basically, i love it!

Jim

I love you guys for doing this! One More Time is my favorite song ever. Listened to it all the time as a kid, and even more as an adult

Jason De La Torre

Too long is awesome, you go in to the song already saying it’s a very long track and how you always skip it, so you’re already dissing it before listening😂 it’s a perfect closer

Sergio Cerda

i subscribed again just cause of this reaction, thank you guys

you two need to watch some live performances of this album together, absolutely unreal

Nino Marino

Also, there’s a film called Eden by Mia Hansen Love which kind of weirdly includes daft punk as characters & has some of their music featured. It got mixed reviews but I liked it!

So hyped to hear your thoughts on yard act! Having lived in a small English village my whole life ‘Tall Poppies’ really speaks to me 😂

Also if you're looking for more EDM, The Avalanches - Since I Left You is so worth BOTH of your time! It's a dance album made exclusively from samples (more than 2000 in total). Absolutely required listening and SO good!

Dylan Owen

I adore Too Long! But the thing to understand about Too Long is that it's a true to form house song, unlike a lot od the rest of the album. Monstrously long songs just kinda come with that territory.

Dylan Owen

Too Long like you guys wasnt really my cup of tea at first, I'd really only listen to it if Im ever going through Discovery on a full listen. I definitely think they were just having fun when they made it and decided to put it in the album for shits and giggles. It's by no means one of my favorite Daft Punk tracks, but I appreciate it enough to not skip it

NathanCritz

The last track on this album stops this album from being perfect imo

Grandgregtauro

Strong agree

sampparts

Not sure if your dad is a big stevie wonder fan (who isnt) but tell your dad to watch the grammys version with stevie wonder. Dont wanna spoil what happens but its one of the best things ive ever heard

Grandgregtauro

You should definitely do the Justice Cross album after having done this one!

James Glass

Burial - Untrue PLEASE

Nick

You guys GOT to do some more Chromeo lmao. Their albums are fun. Also the French House style was so influential. These guys and Justice were a cornerstone of my music foundations I'm college.

Scott Watrous

would love nurture if youre starting to do more electronic stuff!!!

Ben Bronson

Where BTI hehee

Cracc

Alive 2007 is mixed amazingly. I love how they mashed up all of their work and made it new

i've been waiting for this 🔥🔥

Something About Us and Face to Face are my 2 favorite Daft Punk tracks ever. So many memories dude.

Drew Wiley

after this mind expanding sampling conversation, Kevin NEEDS Endtroducing in his life immediately. Please give this man some Shadow soon

Christian Bach

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - Self Titled

Trey Buckner

I think it's my duty to drop some knowledge here on Todd Edwards. He co-produced and sang Face to Face (as well as Fragments of Time on RAM) and his music is known for that super dense, rapid sampling style. He's not really an album artist but he's probably my favorite musician ever, every song is so mind-blowingly dense with samples. You guys should check out some sample breakdowns on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=San8yeM7iyA

Vaughan

Best Daft punk album imo, great video! If you haven’t heard it already I think you both really would enjoy Lovesick by Don Toliver!

Marcus Møller

Discovery ranks above RAM for me I think, I just think its perfect. Would be cool to see you guys do Alive 2007 as well.

Thats it !!! - K

TTT

YARD ACT!!!!

Tristan

Loved this video. It wouldn't be worth making any content for, but if you all get an itch for more of Daft Punk's work from this era in your free time, check out both the 1997 and 1999 Radio 1 Essential Mix Classics from Daft Punk on YouTube. Their work as DJs on those two mixes is absolutely incredible.

Ryan

Now that Kevin is "converted" to sampling.. :D you have to show him Since I Left You by The Avalanches.

Hmm idk

Rest in Peace Gordon Lightfoot ❤️🙏

Michael Gerdes

Need the wtt reaction! Such a good album

Devin

Also Kevin I think the Justin Timberlake song you were thinking of during thr last track is Can’t Stop The Feeling, I was thinking the same just before you said it 😂

Luke Baxter

feels like years since the last daft punk reaction, so hypeddddd

Tyson Jankowiak

You think we waited a long time for this? How about 'Loveless' and *cough* ..'Watch The THRONE!" - it's been 2 years now since you first teased those two, so...come on now lads. Let's get to it? 😴

Jon Scanlon

I’m doing my uni dissertation right now and you guys are helping me push through with the vids. appreciate it! 🫡🫡🫡

Luke Baxter

I love that you guys just don't stick to one or two genres to react to. It's really nice to see that the Daft Punk journey didn't stop at RAM.

Ersin Günay

Whilst you're on the instrumental train, time for some Khruangbin!

Callum

naming the file "dp.mp4" is crazyyy

Mathew Moore

Loved this one guys! Fun fact, " Veridis Quo " is the inverse of " Disco Very " in how it is pronounced

Arthur Klause

Saw The War on Drugs vinyl in the background - potential reaction?

yellowflannel

Oh damn this is was an instant classic.

Scott Watrous

Thank y’all so much. I second the guys opinion on too long right above me

Jackson Kricken

To be honest, I also didn't really like Too Long when I first listened to the album, but it has grown on me a hell of a lot. To me at least, the length and feel of the song kinda makes it feel kinda like getting back home from a grand adventure. I would highly recommend watching Interstella 5555, it can help give some new perspective on all of these songs, especially for Too Long.

cheeseflag99

Too Long is a great way to bring the album to an end with a very simple but catchy pure house track. It takes their signature ability to introduce/drop elements at just the right time and extends it over a more calming ending. I do think a lot of my love for it does also come from Interstella 5555 and Alive 2007 tbf

too long is a great ending i love it. it's a long jam to end the album out, very fun to decomress to, it's catchy. face to face would feel like an abupt ending

JohnMichael Kane

Watch Interstellar 5555 👽

I came here to say this too. Please watch it!!

I know y'all get a lot of requests, but if you want to show your dad more EDM type music then i highly reccomend Porter Robinson. Super creative dude with some great production

Grandma NumNums

Yes! I came here to say just this! Would love for Kevin to watch it on stream or something!

Nino Small

So glad you guys got around to this one finally. The only other Daft Punk album that could maybe warrant a reaction in my opinion is Alive 2007. Even though it's a live album, it's very pivotal for defining what modern live EDM looks and sounds like (artists like Skrillex and Deadmau5). The way they mix their songs together to create something new out of it, is truly astounding.

also intersteller 5555 is an anime movie that daft punk hired actual anime companies to make. and the audio of the entire movie is discovery and it follows a whole storyline with the music kind of like as a part of it

JohnMichael Kane

Illinois please

yellowflannel

Yes 👍
