The concept for this film is genius, I love it. As great as Jim Carrey is I think Laura Linney gives the best performance. Her facial expressions and tone is just so good. Like for example, when they're in the car, she looks back at the camera as if she's trying to assure the audience that everything is alright and yet pleading to Christof to help her, lol. It's similar too when she has to do the cocoa ad, you can tell she literally has to do the whole thing and they are probably pestering her in her ear to do so. I also recently more noticed her reactions in the flashback when she and Truman are dancing and he keeps looking at Sylvia, she gives her quite a few stink eyes, like she's saying "this is my role." I also laugh way too hard when they have to do the "amputation." From the doctor shaking, the patient shooting up and the way they just pull on her leg and say "well done" is just so funny to me. Even though he doesn't appear much later and has minimal screen time I think Paul Giamatti doesn't waste what he was given, I love when he flat out refuses to turn the boat. And I like that they showed the audience being happy for him. There's also some really great deleted scenes that goes further into the actors like Meryl and such. There's a great one where all the actors are having a meeting, going over what's going to happen with the show and they touch upon it a little bit in the movie but they really discuss Christof wanting Truman to have a baby. Probably to not only keep him on the Island more but also to have someone when Truman gets too old, which is insane. But they clearly show that Marlon is not pleased, showing to even feel guilty. Which really makes me look at the scene when he's getting fed his lines a lot differently, to me you can tell he didn't want to say these things, but he's doing his job. He probably really does love Truman as a brother, he's been part of the show and in his life since he was 7. I wish we got more of that, it would have been interesting to explore.

I don't know if have heard it. I would like your reaction to the music video 'It wasn't me.' By Shaggy . Totally on brand for the Hot Mess Express.

Did you catch that Glass is in the movie, ostensibly as himself, when they show Christof conducting the live composing of the scene where Truman's dad reappears?

Ashleigh, I loved your reaction to **The Truman Show** — and I have to share one musical layer that makes the film even more brilliant. The filmmakers brought in **Philip Glass**, one of the most important 20th-century composers, to shape the sound of Truman’s world. Glass is famous for minimalist music — repeating patterns that slowly evolve — and that choice is *not* accidental in a film about repetition, control, and a life that’s literally on a loop. His music feels beautiful but slightly suspended, almost like time isn’t moving the way it should… which is exactly Truman’s reality. What’s fascinating is how the film contrasts that with more traditional Western classical music (like Mozart) to represent Truman’s “normal” life — ordered, familiar, culturally reassuring. Mozart sounds stable and complete; Glass sounds patterned and constructed. It’s almost like the movie is quietly asking: if Truman’s world is artificial, what else that we think of as “normal” is also constructed — even musically? The score becomes part of the philosophy. That’s such a bold, smart choice for what looks on the surface like a Jim Carrey comedy.

When he does the bit in the mirror as an astronaut, that was actually an improv Jim Carrey did that they kept in. That's why he said, "that one is free" at the end. I don't think you're overthinking it. It's a crazy experiment, honestly. Like, he wanted to be "free" and explore more of the world so he wasn't really that comfortable where he was. AND, why would you want to stay somewhere where everything is a lie? Every person in that town lied to him his whole life. The only thing he could do was leave. It's super crazy, creepy and gross that they let it go on that long. And, remember when Christoff was being interviewed and he was asked about Truman figuring it out? He said there wasn't anything they could do to stop him. But he sure did try... like almost killed Truman. It's nuts.

This is one of those movies where I've seen it so many times that I don't really need to rewatch it often, HOWEVER, it's very interesting to see someone going in to it blind. When this came out, everybody knew the concept from the trailers and promotions. It was a big deal that Jim Carrey was doing a "serious" movie. But I still think of this as a comedy.

Finally getting to open up my Truman blu-Ray.

This movie provokes a million thoughts and theories. I love this movie. It ranks in my top 10 movies of all time. My personal theory is that Truman knew that he was being watched the entire time and he was biding his time. He knew since he was a kid. Kid's arn't stupid. He saw the college girl being taken away from him. He saw he was being forced to marry a certain woman. And at the end he says "you never had a camera in my mind". He bided his time until he saw the right opportunity to leave.
