Togenashi Togeari - Bleeding Hearts (1st one-man Live)

If you are hearing this for the first time, then you might not believe me when I say that this is a real band in an real anime that has a great story line and great music.

I'm completely serious. If you haven't checked out Girls Band Cry, please...go do so. It's a great anime and this is the kind of music you get out of it!

My friend has suggested that I watch Violet Evergarden before and said I would love it. I started the first episode but got distracted immediately with something else. I guess I should go back to it. You and Frantaf have both talked about how good it is. ...anime about motorbikes, you say? A dream of mine is to own a sport bike. I love the idea, but I am too scared to even ride one because of how dangerous it can be in this area. My family is also strongly against it, but ever since I saw Claire Redfield in Resident Evil riding a bike, I've always been interested.

Also funny you should mention League and a scuttle plushie; since I posted about Korean girl band QWER in the comments back on episode 12 of 'Rock Is A Lady's Modesty' I've fallen down the rabbit-hole a little and in the process learned more about them; their name is derived from the primary controls in League and their fans are known as 바위게 (Rift Scuttlers/Scuttle Crabs).

As for my favourite anime of all time, my gut answer is Violet Evergarden, the show and sequel movies emotionally devastate me multiple times in a mostly cathartic fashion, the characters, VAs and stories are great and it's perhaps the most consistently gorgeous looking anime ever made. There's a whole bunch of others I love including plenty from the last decade or so. Cowboy Bebop would certainly get an honorable mention for older fare; my dark horse mention however would have to go to Super Cub, a relatively low budget single season slice-of-life from 2021 partially about the titular motorbikes and growing up in a semi-rural area, it also handles mild depression in a subtle visual way that's really illustrative. It's not groundbreaking per say but really resonated with both me and aspects of my upbringing. The main character VA Yuki Yomichi is a big time motorcycle enthusiast and it shows, her character couldn't have been cast much more perfectly.

The business model for Girls Band Cry is partly based on the Bang Dream franchise (aka. Bandori) that started in 2015, which now has IIRC ten all-female bands that also do live performances to large crowds, with three seasons of the main anime series plus multiple spinoffs, movies and mobile rhythm games. The VAs for those groups are a mixture of members who are either professional musicians first and have then been trained as VAs or vice versa (usually you get a blend of the two types in each group to ensure enough overall musical proficiency & additional backing tracks augment some of the less experienced groups live). It's also meant to be pretty good but requires a real commitment of time given the amount of material out there, so I've not really dove far down that rabbithole. Plus with the storylines there's less emphasis on realism in terms of the struggles upcoming musicians face, the rate of progress and the facilities available to them. In this live performance the singer Rina would've been not quite 15 and a half. She's the youngest of the VA/Band members and infact was even younger than her character when doing the first season (she was born 13th November '07). Next youngest member is drummer Mirei (7th November '03), then bassist Shuri (22nd December '07, my birthday twin even if I'm legitimately old enough to legally be her father, same day as Koga from Gacharic Spin as well), then keyboardist Natsu (23rd August '01) and finally guitarist Yuri (26th September '00). Unfortunately, since 12th July 2024, Natsu (Tomo) and Mirei (Subaru) had been on indefinite hiatus from performing & promotion due to poor health. The remaining three members Nina (Rina), Yuri (Momoka) & Shuri (Rupa) continued to perform shows with support drums & keys (one live featured Tamu Murata of Nemophila on drums). These gigs have been both solo shows, collabs with other bands and at anime conventions both domestically & internationally (Shanghai, Taipei & LA). Both Natsu & Mirei returned to VA dubbing work in April 2025 and have also resumed practicing. They had been aiming to make a performance return for the band's Budokan concert this month but weren't able to be ready in time (maybe a stamina thing or perhaps suffered some minor setbacks) and the band used support musicians again instead. Both posted about it on their individual accounts, so I'm hopeful we might see the full line-up reunited onstage before the end of the year or at least for the domestic tour next spring. The quality of the live shows and stage presence of the three fully active members has noticeably improved each time since the first solo gig, Shuri is probably the flashiest in terms of her technical ability still, but they all seem more comfortable performing. The studio version actually is only featuring the singer Rina (Nina), guitarist Yuri (Momoka) provided vocals on the tracks where her character sang in the show but otherwise all the instruments are being played/recorded by members of Agehasprings, the music production company responsible for writing all the music in the show. For now the other members only play the music live; I think eventually they might get to contribute instrumentally to the recordings, but given they're still only 21-25 in age and half have also been on medical hiatus from performances for over a year, there doesn't seem to be too much of rush to put that added pressure/responsibility on them.
