Oddtober #15: Standoff

After a desperate battle, First Lieutenant Blyse, Director Maddin, four researchers, and a single enforcer were all that remained, the fallen subsumed into the ranks of the enemy.

     "The escape pod," said Maddin, catching her breath, "it's down that way." She pointed down the darkened corridor.

     Blyse turned. With a nearly mechanical motion, he fired a single shot into the back of his enforcer's head, then turned the gun on Maddin. "The data-core," he said plainly, "give it to me." He motioned with his open hand.

     Maddin and two of her researchers lowered their weapons, the other two turning to run. Her eyes narrowed. "I should have expected this."

     "No time to waste," said Blyse. "Take it out of your pocket and roll it over to me."

     "It won't be as useful without me to explain it." Maddin slowly retrieved the metal sphere. Crouching, she rolled it along the floor.

     "But it will be useful," answered Blyse, bending cautiously at the knees to grab the object in his right hand, "and I will be alive."

     "Your superiors will learn of what you've done here." Maddin attempted to lock eyes with Blyse, but the hood of his officer's cowl obscured them. "Even the New Dominion wouldn't reward conduct this craven."

     "The New Dominion rewards success, Director." Blyse smirked. "And besides, they'll never even know or care that you existed."

     The creaking and buckling of metal broke a brief and silent tension, and with powerful inertia, something massive moved from the shadows beyond....

This is the 15th entry for our "Oddtober" event. Every odd day (up through Halloween), we'll be releasing some models following a sci-fi horror theme (all following a light narrative), adding them to the $5+ reward folder as we go. Today's model (Director Maddin, the civilian research leader) will require supports when printing.
