117 - Right In the Privates
Added 2021-09-19 21:29:21 +0000 UTCDestin's working on a video I think is super important about privacy rights, and privacy practices of tech companies. We got deep into that stuff in this conversation.
Also, Destin celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday and I think that's pretty cool. He's off in the woods right now enjoying nature and spending time with Tara, so I think his forties are off to a good start.
It's good to have friends who have your back.
Thanks for that.

You mentioned you would love to be able to pay for Google, you should check out an upcoming product called Neeva. It's made by many of the same engineers who helped build Google search, except with a fresh business model that sounds like exactly what you were asking for. Long time fan of the podcast, thanks for all you do :) [disclaimer I am an employee at Neeva]

2021-09-23 17:54:21 +0000 UTCAs I am new-ish to this podcast I listen to older episodes in between the newer. In the last two days I've listened to this episodes 117 and, by coincidence, 055 which has similar elements of privacy, internet security, post-truth madness and a little bit of how the government has a role to play in these. Then I triple whammyed myself by watching 'The Mauritanian'. It's a 'true story' based on a person detained in Gitmo after 9-11. All of this combined has been a lot to take in all at once for my brain. My point is that I'm grateful that Matt and Destin present the information thoughtfully, rationally and truthfully. Thank you guys. God bless. Ps. I highly recommend The Mauritanian as must see. Even better to do an episode about it!
2021-09-22 17:29:45 +0000 UTCHappy birthday, Destin! I’m really hoping with Ironwood Rhino and a new SmarterEveryDay Podcast this doesn’t mean the end of NDQ…that would be a travesty! Love the podcast and a proud Winged-Hussar!
2021-09-22 15:02:28 +0000 UTCIn the last moments of the podcast location based warrants were mentioned. I think some of that has been limited by some court cases. But, the need for that data is being fulfilled by data brokers that law enforcement agencies have turned to. Here’s some relevant search results (quality of source and data should be assumed to be not that great): https://www.criminallegalnews.org/news/2020/jun/15/office-homeland-security-circumventing-warrant-requirement-buying-cellphone-location-data-marketing-firm/ , https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/us/politics/dia-surveillance-data.html , https://www.wired.com/story/can-government-buy-way-around-fourth-amendment/

2021-09-22 01:31:05 +0000 UTCListened today and really enjoyed this one! Your three tier hierarchy for the podcast reminded me of your backwards bike video. I remember you saying that knowledge is not understanding. One can know everything about a bike and not know how to ride, having never been on one. So maybe knowledge is the access and understanding is any experience gained of the process? That's what I'm thinking. I appreciated paralleling with your idea on the heart being wicked too, because I think the mind is the one wicked one, since it's the lizard brain. Heart means well, but the mind goes about it poorly. The point on the freedom and space to change and not be defined solely on one point of our past is so good too. Data from the past being easily taken out of context.
