114 - Are Internet Comments a Good Idea?

My short answer would be yes, but there's certainly a down side to just about any type of mediated communication and Internet comments are no exception. We bring in Barnaby Dixon to talk about the plusses and minuses and the quirks of this new way of interacting with each other.

You know who's good at Internet commenting? You. Thanks for being a part of this in the way you are.

Comments

In considering this subject, I realized that, similar to Jack, I have no internet presence in commenting on any platforms, with one notable exception: right here. I'm not sure what to think that my only comments on the internet are behind a paywall, so only folks who are also supporting Destin and Matt will ever see them. It gives me a certain kind of comfort to know the folks who will read my comments have the context of appreciating NDQ's content to the point of putting their money towards it. It feels like it'll be a better discussion right out of the gate. Comments on the internet have almost exclusively been a neutral or negative experience for me. The internet is a type of the modern marketplace for the largest gatherings of people interested in discussion, and it feels like things are progressing so far towards antagonism and disallowing that people just aren't showing up anymore. It feels like the folks who agree with each other show up to their own discussions about how right they are and how wrong others are, with the end result that no one ever gets a chance to discuss anything. My wife and I discussed Sasha's bravery in sharing her clinical experiences and perspective, and Barnaby's bravery in putting a video on his channel that airs someone's opinion on a debated subject. Whether someone agrees with her or not, it still is facing a challenge to place content into a sphere where potentially millions of people are waiting to voice their opinions. I was really affected by Barnaby's maturity in how he processed things and handled the negative feedback without getting ruffled, and really absorbed the uplifting comments as personal motivation. Well done, Barnaby!

Great episode, and I enjoyed as always. It’s unfortunate that negative comments gained more attention and talking space during this discussion than positive ones. Nevertheless, that’s the nature of us. We tend to fixate on negatives rather than positives.
