Greedy Little Men, part 54.

When one is contemplating becoming a super-hero, one is always in the right, and always the winner. But reality is under no obligation to match your dreams. Reality is stubbornly messy, in fact.

Greedy Little Men, part 54.

If Jan wants to be a "superhero", then she can run around getting kittens out of trees and saving people from floods. If she wants to go after bad people and bring them to justice extra-legally, then the word she is looking for isn't superhero, it's "vigilante". And if she is going to play the vigilante game, she needs to understand this: Don't carry a weapon if you won't draw it. Don't draw a weapon if you won't use it. Don't use a weapon if you aren't prepared to hurt. Don't hurt unless you are prepared to kill. Don't kill unless you are prepared to be tried, convicted, and imprisoned. That doesn't mean you always kill (looking at you, Pat!) - but you understand it's always a possible outcome. And if you aren't willing to deal with that, hang up the suit and go back to the boardroom.

As Jan wonders what she got herself into... Nobody said it would be pretty, and revenge always has a bitter aftertaste.

A friend always says, "The only reason I survived Nam is because Heaven wouldn't have me and Hell was afraid I'd take over." Hardly original, but now he's looking at 80 -- and 80 blinked.

On the topic of becoming a monster, I have my own saying on that. If you are thrown into Hell and you die, you are a Victim. If you are thrown into Hell and you make it back out, you are a Survivor. If you are thrown into Hell and you come back with trophies, you are a Hunter. If you are thrown into Hell and you stay because you enjoy yourself, you are a Monster.

I believe the quote is "Battle ye not with monsters, lest you become a monster. If you look unto the abyss, the abyss looks back unto you."
