Art in the time of corona.

So, things are definitely not normal. States all over the globe declaring emergencies, shutting off borders, shutting down all social life. My county decided it would close all schools from Monday onwards - for three weeks plus two weeks of Easter holidays. Shops and even restaurants here are still open, but I'm pretty sure that won't be for long.

Weirdly, the realisation that we'll mostly be cooped up at home came as a bit of a relief. Not going to a place where a thousand people meet every day does put my mind at ease a bit (add the fact that millions of other people will also not meet daily anymore). I have no idea whether this will be enough, but we'll see.

Anyway, I decided that, having to spend five weeks at home, I will need to give myself something to do other than hitting "refresh" in the live ticker on news sites. So welcome to Art In The Time Of Corona. I will try to make something beautiful every day, and I hope it will brighten your days a little, as well!

Stay safe, stay well, all of you! Let's dig ourselves in and not give up hope.

"In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.
Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell."

Fantastic idea Jenny, to bring some beauty & art in these times of trouble!

We've been asked to work from home at least until the end of March (I'll be surprised if this isn't pushed until after Easter). Even if I keep at my known tasks, this will buy me 10 hours per week just in transport, plus another 10 hours for the mixture of support and firefighting that usually occupies much of my time ... Looking so much forward to have time to actually get to a few of the things, I've been postponing for months (and in a few cases even years). Still, a few fresh new distractions will be extremely welcome, thank you :-)

What a great way to occupy your time. It makes so much sense for people to self-isolate whenever possible but unfortunately, I have dialysis treatment 4 days a week, so that will probably be the only time I'll be leaving the house. It's a great opportunity for people to catch up on their reading (I have a mountain of books to get through) and seeing your wonderful illustrations to cheer themselves up.

No, some teachers have agreed to come in on Monday and Tuesday to take care of kids who can't stay home. Most of our students are old enough to stay home alone; it's just the Year 5 and 6s that may have to keep coming in. Our headmaster will tell us how that affects us, but so far, I haven't heard anything.

You don't have to come in on Monday and Tuesday (for looking after the kids whose parents couldn't organise supervision on short notice and for "kollegiale Absprachen" whatever that means)? I'm envious. We do, and then we'll have to figure out how to keep classes running for those pre-teens whose parents are working in indispensable jobs (health, police, etc.). There's definitely a sense of relief though - both for good reasons (minimising infection vectors) and bad (it'll sure be nice to have a few additional weeks to tidy stuff up and filing stuff that's been gathering on my desk since after the Christmas holidays...). As soon as I know just how much school life still takes place for teachers, anyway.

You and your family need to stay safe Jenny! Scary times we are living in. Most of my friends fall into the high risk category, as do I, so we're all staying home here in California instead of going out even to eat. So strange.

Hope you and your family stay healthy!

Thank you for posting “In western lands”. It really brought a smile to my face. All schools are closed here in Pennsylvania for the next two weeks. I have a feeling it may turn into more. Strange days indeed. Stay well. I look forward to your art.

Good health to you and yours! And thank you for the lovely image! <3
