Herbology - next wip

This is one of those absolutely weird moments in which you realise that you have levelled up - without playing the game in months.

I've encountered this a couple of times in my life. Often after long hiatuses without any (or with very little) art, because the last few pieces before the hiatus had frustrated me so badly I didn't feel like drawing for a long time (or in some cases, because I was too busy to draw much. After these stretches, instead of easing into things slowly and feeling your way around what you're doing, your first real attempt at art just goes BAM. Two famous examples are the Oath of Feanor, and In Pain and Regret. This looks is if it might be the next.

For ages now, I've been desperate to do translucent watercolours, especially in the skin. Theoretically, I knew how I wanted to achieve that. But in practice, it just didn't work out. Maybe I've just managed to find some kickass paper again (in which case, yay Canson!), but I think it's more than that. I'm convinced that your brain keeps working on technique even if your hands are not. And sometimes, when your hands have taken a long break, your brain suddenly moves forward in leaps and bounds. Thing is, you won't know until you've given your hands something to do again!

HI Nick, and welcome! Nothing technical - it was a mental thing. I've written a blog post about this, maybe this'll answer the question better: https://goldseven.wordpress.com/2017/11/02/a-herbology-lesson/ Let me know if you still have questions!

Jenny Dolfen

Can you explain exactly what you did to achieve this from what you were doing before from a technical standpoint?

Nick Rolf

Funny how that happens-- it's happened to me a couple times with writing. Glad to hear you're getting back into the swing of things, and looking forward to what comes next :)

It is so great to see you feeling the groove again :-) Have missed your work!

I know! That is something I really have to ease into again - right now, I'm just glad I can do art again. But yes, I'll definitely do some streaming again soon!

Jenny Dolfen

Oh that will be nice!❤️ I‘m looking forward to it. Are you going to stream again? I miss your streams. ❤️

I love the pale highlight down his nose, contrasted with the ruddyness of its end. (See, back to noses again!)

Marvelous, Jenny. I love the facial expressions.
