Arrival (2016) | ClaudieTV

Well this was interesting...

I'm not the biggest fan of alien stuff, as it spooks the absolute buttons out of me, but this was very cool!

Intuiging concept and an interesting take on the classic 'alien visitor' concept.

Enjoy!

Yeah I was so impressed by how they worked with time order here, whether it be the movie itself or the language! So so good!

Claudie

Their language is based on something called palindromy — basically, it’s circular and sort of goes back and forth, like her daughter’s name. So she doesn’t just see the future — she’s living it, at the same time as the present, and the two kind of blend together. Anyone who learns this language ends up seeing life in a completely different way — it’d honestly change how humanity sees itself. Another brilliant bit about the film is that the whole thing’s written like a palindrome too, which really messes with the way we’re used to seeing time and the world. No wonder so many people were moaning about it, haha. It’s tough not to think in straight lines, isn’t it?

Would love to see you watching CODA. Saw that one recently and found it absolutely fantastic! I think we have a very similar taste in movies, so I bet you'd like it

1:55:49 "Well this was uplifting..." My suggestion for the pool of movies to choose from is "Grave of the Fireflies (1988)". Another uplifting movie.

Denis Villeneuve - Say his name! (LoLz) "If you could see your whole life, from start to finish, would you change anything?" What a question. Touching on the meaning: If you had a hot fudge sundae and you were told you could eat it but there will be a couple of sour spoonful's along the way would you still want to eat it? Would the experience not still be worth it? WTF am I saying here. There was a point, I swear. Go listen to Natalie Merchant "Life Is Sweet" that may help me out. Ha!

Yeah the cinematogrpahy was brilliant, at adding macro and micro scale! I'll have a think :)

The juxtapositioning of the vast landscape and the alien craft against the microcosm of things happening in Louise's mind (and therfore our minds as audience members) is pretty amazing. ETA: My suggestion to throw in the potential movie mix would be Magnolia. Will explain why later when I have more time. Cheers!

Yes! It was only when editing the differentiation became clear! Very very clever! Gotcha will consider those two movies :) Youre always welcome. Enjoy your weekend too!

So glad you enjoyed this, Claudie. This was my favorite film of 2016 and yet another example of Denis Villenueve’s directorial mastery. You asked for a small tidbit, and what I enjoyed noticing in one of my first rewatches years ago was the Montana site being “told” ‘Offer Weapon’ and then the news talking about the Chinese being advised ‘Use weapon’ … which further reinforces the ambiguity of the language barrier because ‘offer’ and ‘use’ have very different meanings. I like that so much of the film is a matter of perspective and context; and that it’s more about our own connection to each other than the profoundness of alien contact. For a Villenueve film set squarely amongst humans and told linearly, Sicario would be my vote … though for more sci-fi, his Blade Runner 2049 is also superb (having seen the first film from Ridley Scott back in the ‘80s is unsurprisingly a must beforehand.) And I know you were being facetious about wanting us to try harder to recommend films that could be emotionally devastating but there are certainly films which we could recommend to do so if you want. 😎. Have a great weekend!
