Hair loss is a problem that can kill one’s self esteem and self confidence.
It's rough. This article will cut through the fluff to give you straight answers about dealing and preventing hair loss.
Remember, hair isn't just about looks; it's tied to how we feel inside. When it goes, our self-esteem can take a hit.
Even a small amount of hair loss can be devastating to self esteem, self image which can affect your overall quality of life.
Many men who were extremely confident when they had a full head of hair are no longer who they once where. Especially in the current modern society we are in where hair is an indication of good health.
What Causes Hair Loss?
1. Genetics
Family history can play a significant role, so if your parents have a history of losing hair then there is a chance that you will also lose hair when you reach that age.
2. Stress
After your genetics, this will be the main cause of hair loss. There are different types of hair loss associated with stress.
Stress can push hair follicles into a "resting" phase, meaning they won't produce new hair strands as they typically would. After a few months, the hairs might fall out suddenly when combing or washing your hair in the shower.
Some people also have an urge to pull out their hair from the scalp, eyebrows, or other parts of their body. It's a way some people deal with negative feelings, such as stress, tension, loneliness, boredom, or frustration.
So when you’re going through a phase where you are super stressed out, you hair will stop growing, this is why its important have an effective stress management strategy which works for YOU when you're going through challenging times.
3. Certain Hairstyles & Hair Treatments
Tightly pulled hair can cause ‘traction alopecia’. Hot oil treatments can cause inflammation of hair follicles leading to hair loss.
Braiding hair too tightly, wearing hair in a tight ponytail or bun daily, using hair extensions excessively, or pulling hair back severely can all lead to traction alopecia.
The constant pulling damages the hair follicles over time. It can lead to inflammation, scarring, and gradual hair loss.
Tight styles put excessive strain on the hair at the hairline, temples or part line. These areas may show thinning or bald patches.
Using chemicals, dyes, bleaches or high heat in addition to tight styles further stresses the hair. This causes damage to the follicles.
The tension limits blood supply to the follicles impacting their ability to grow healthy hair. Then the hair becomes brittle and breaks easily.
Traction alopecia is reversible if detected early and the hairstyles causing tension are stopped.
To prevent it, avoid hairstyles that cause constant pulling on the hair or scalp. Don't tie hair too tightly.
4. Getting A Line Up (Shape Up) Too Often
To get a sharp looking line up, the barber has to slightly cut the hairs in the front. So if you're doing these very often, your hairline will be pushed back slowly overtime.
Over time, this can give the appearance of a receding hairline as the natural growth might not align with the repeatedly cut line.
How To Combat Hairloss ?
Firstly, make sure you’re doing the basics like eating & sleeping properly, also, managing stress effectively.
Assuming you are doing those things, here are some treatments to combat hair loss.
**Please do further research on the solutions I have recommended to see if it will be right for YOU 🫵 before committing**
1. Minoxidil 5%
Minoxidil is a medication that can help regrow hair on the scalp. It works by improving blood flow and extending the growth phase of hair. Use it consistently for at least 6 months to see results.
If you are a woman, make sure you search ‘Women’s Minoxidil’ as the one for men is not meant for women to be using.
Minoxidil is a very popular solution to help grow hair.
It can also help to grow a beard if you’re a man who wants to grow one.
I personally use it for my eyebrows to keep them full and thick. I also apply it to the corners of my hairline.
Unfortunately this product will not lower your hairline. It just does a good job of preventing hair loss in the scalp, hairline thinning and recession.
Use it with a derma roller. A derma roller helps boosts the absorption of minoxidil, making it much more effective.
2. Finasteride
*NOT FOR WOMEN*
This isn oral prescription medication that blocks specific hormones that can contribute to hair loss in men.
It completely stops further hair loss in most men and helps regrow hair in some. It does have potential side effects so do further research on this.
Potential side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory dysfunction. Risk is very low (2-3%).
The side effects are relatively rare and usually reversible after you stop using it.
It is more effective when started early at the first signs of hair thinning or loss. So if there is a history of the guys in your family losing hair, start doing this now before the signs of hairless coming in.
This can be a great way to prevent the hair loss before it starts to happen.
It works best at the crown and mid-scalp area. Finasteride is well studied for hair loss treatment. Clinical trials show it is very effective in slowing hair loss progression and increasing hair growth.
It is not approved for use in women due to risk of birth defects.
3. Hair transplant
This is a very effective procedure which involves the surgeon taking hair from the back of your head and then applying it to the areas where you have lost hair.
If you are to do it, go to turkey. Good doctors, good prices.
Don’t just rush and go and do it, take some time to do some research online for a good clinic to do it at.
When you do your research, make sure to highly consider reviews from people who have your similar hair type / texture. This will let you know if those surgeons will do a good job for YOU.
When done properly by an experienced surgeon, the transplanted hair looks and behaves naturally. The results are permanent.
So you can style it and get regular hair cuts like you would before. I would even suggest to use the minoxidil and finasteride for best results.
You will see results immediately, the hair will start to grow back in 2 weeks, however, for proper results you’ll have to wait over 6-9 months to see solid results.
If you want to lower your hair line, this could be done to achieve that look.
4. SMP
Scalp Micro Pigmentation
This is similar to micro blading that women get for their eyebrows.
Think of it as a hair tattoo. It replicates the appearance of finer, tiny hairs that create the illusion of a shaved head or fuller hair density in thinning areas.
It does not restore actual hair growth but provides a cosmetic effect which looks very natural.
It gives immediate results, no surgery, and minimal recovery time.
Multiple sessions, often 2-3, are typically required, spaced a few weeks apart and it is not a one and done type of thing.
Maintaining it with touch-ups might be necessary every 4-6 years as the tattoo pigments can fade over time.
Again, do your research and find a good practitioner. If you need a recommendation, just dm me.
5. Go Bald
Surprisingly, many men actually look MUCH better when they are bald compared to how they look trying to hold onto hair thats running away.
Guess what? if it doesn’t look good, you can always do any of the options above.
It will just take time getting used to as its something new to you (If you do it)
When you wana go bald, I’d recommend rocking a nice well maintained beard which is not too bushy. Keep it at a good length and make sure it is nicely shaped up at the jawline and chin area to give your face a chiselled masculine appearance.
It’s important to always keep the beard well maintained tho.
Things to avoid
1. If the men in your family have a history of hair loss, don’t ignore it because it will most likely happen to you as you get older. So in order to prevent it, start NOW before the signs of hairloss has happened. Especially with minoxidil and the finasteride.
2. Don’t wear a Toupee. Whilst this may seem like a cost effective way of dealing with your hair loss, it is a very stressful solution.
You are never comfortable when you’re around people and your whole life will revolve around the toupee, you will never be at ease due to it.
You will be highly stressed on windy, rainy and hot days.
Heat and sweat can make toupees prone to lifting or peeling off. So your activities may need to be limited.
"will it shift?""does it look obvious?", or those awkward toupee maintenance moments. It just gets draining.
A toupee does not treat the underlying hair loss problem. Hair will continue receding under the toupee.
And it will be very difficult having the conversation about why you wear a toupee when you meet a new potential romantic partner.
Honestly, theres better alternatives like minoxidil, finasteride, hair transplants, SMP or simply embracing natural baldness.
3. To prevent hairline recession, stop getting a shape up soo often. let your hair fully grow back before cutting it again.
I hope this helps, if you have any further questions, let me know.
Till next time.
Comments
Yes it can play a part to it but it’s not amongst the main causes, there are many people who don’t eat properly or even exercise and they still have all their hair
