This arc is probably my favorite. I just love the chimera ants and their complexities.

Danny

@Ninaly wha I didn't even notice, twinsies!

Nina

I have, and I read the manga. I think I know the scene you wanna talk about and it's great. It's also not great how someone else doesn't get a scene like that and they're just stuck babysitting. Although that babysitting scene is also great.

Shivering King Banana

@Nina hi twin!

Ninaly

Try going back to hunter exam from here, it's not remotely the same show, Togashi really hits his stride here.

Nina

I'd say this part of it isn't that slow. Yeah there's no big fights happening currently but you get plenty of exposition to keep your interest. There's some later parts that I'd definitely say slow down the pace tremendously, but we'll how they feel when they get there. The girls aren't the types to mind a slower pace anyway, they're not here JUST for the action either like some are.

Nina

I think on first watch it’s always captivating but on rewatch there is definitely an element of waiting for the incredible stuff at the end

Mahni Alizadeh

I'm going to assume you haven't watched the rest of the show

Nathan Elkin

Este es mi arco preferido de todo el anime.

David Brown

Yeah the mom was malnourished and the kid is tiny. But still he had a moment where he almost remembered.

Shivering King Banana

Hola. Primer punto. Las amo. Me divierto mucho con ustedes. Son lo máximo. Segundo punto. En español también se dice Quimera. Hello. First point. I love you. I have a lot of fun with you. You are the best. Second point. In Spanish it is also called "quimera"

David Brown

That ant jumped over the mom and kid because they weren't nutritious enough.

Nathan Elkin

Gon

Nathan Elkin

Intelligence does not necessarily lead to empathy. It can just make something more efficient. Empathy is a trait that is taught, in my opinion. I usually think of the Chimera Ants as having alien morality. Also, it’s hard to teach something when it is born with the ability to kill everything around them. I feel bad for Gon. Letting his dad down is an unreasonable notion, but I understand letting himself down. I also think Gon needs to understand that it’s okay to retreat. There’s nothing inherently wrong with running away, but Killua and Gon have little experience when to do what. Standing your ground can get you killed for nothing in return. The universe doesn’t care about good intentions. I’d personally would feel guilty if my choice got my friend killed, even if they stayed with me on their own.

Rare

Morality is a human construct, we created it so society can function better and people can get along better. There are animals who display empathy but I doubt they question whether something is right or wrong. It's also why humans are the only animals capable of evil since we are the most self aware and should know better.

Lil Don075

🙄🙄🙄

Lil Don075

What? But that scene was so "fun".

A

It feels like the part 2 to hxh. The better part

Cole

I never understood how it’s slow I was captivated since the beginning.

Cole

100% this, it's basically all setup but the number of intriguing storytelling possibilities that open up every episode is unbelievably exciting (and it lives up to all of that!)

Payam Sharifi

OH I think I know the one. Yeah good god

Payam Sharifi

God people say this arc starts slow and it does in that the conflict takes a bit to get set up. But when you consider how much happens in that setup, when you consider that we're going from more-or-less mindless ants to a the beginnings of a whole humanoid society within a few episodes, it's actually incredibly fast-paced. And man, I cannot wait for so much of what's coming, I've never been so excited watching this channel before.

Payam Sharifi

I’m expecting some of those aot tears to make there way here eventually time will tell how the girls react as we move forward very excited that two episode lock is really gonna feel like a weight here lol

Justin Spencer

Your point is well taken, but by the same token there are animals and insects that are purely wild and act mostly on instinct and inherent programming. In HxH it gets way more complex since some chimera ants inherit moral traits directly from the humans they were created from - whether for good or for evil through no fault of their own. Both nature and nurture come into play here.

R L

I loved your discussion. About Pokkle, the guy with light purple cap, he was indeed hiding in the grass and he used a poisoned arrow to paralyze his target during 4th exam. The person who attacked Gon and was killed by Hisoka used poisoned blow darts too

Yū Nishinoya

Side note, you guys really need to watch jujutsu kaisen. Its absolutely crazy, and I hope you do

Allison Cornell

I agree it's already so refreshing watching it with them

StrawHat

We used selective breeding on animals, but they had to be domesticable first. Only certain animals are able to be tamed, and that trait wasn't around because of humans. So, animals are not able to be domesticated BECAUSE humans exist, but humans were the ones able to exploit and use it. And wild animals don't have to fight everyday to survive, that's a little hardcore.

Billy Overlord

Gives me dopamine to see Lola say "oh my god" every 1 minute as her brain starts firing off with possibilties. I've seen many people call the start of the arc slow, whereas for me it's one of my favorite buildups ever because I was immediately fascinated with the concept - glad the girlies are on the same vibe!

Ninaly

Not only does the ants have different personalities but their ideologies will be different too when ants start get into larger groups and has to follow basically castle orders lol.

ForiegnKarma

To be fair , the only reason why domestic animals exist IS because of humans. Humans have traded our animalistic tools to survive in favor of having intelligence over time in evolution.Wild Animals regardless have to fight everyday so their mentality is different rather than a puppy that’s been genetically made to survive by humans lol.

ForiegnKarma

I can't wait for the reaction for the climax of this arc. Anyway...i know this is Off Topic but is there any chance they will do the One Piece Live Action reaction? I think girls would love that show.

Cris92

I'm rewatching the anime with you girls for the 3rd time and I'm reading the manga new chapters, and with all that background I get more and more surprised and shocked by how many meaning and impact each dialogue brings to the show. Nothing is wasted, everything serves a purpose in the future, it's bizarre how fucking good and well written this is, Togashi is really something.

Max__

Okay wait why is this show getting so good? I love an exploration of humanity, very cool to see them learning.

Michael Cannon

Oh crap, a scene in this episode reminded me of a nauseating future scene. Now I have to brace myself for it, good luck with this arc girls lol.

Nina

The fact that you already like the ants and want to see more of them on screen is reassuring, many people don't like this beginning because of the time we spend with the ants, they are strange and not carismatic, but this beginning is very important for everything that be to come

Wallas

You keep saying "humans have morality and animals don't" but is that even true? Generalizing all animals is a big statement, lots of animals care for each other, and feel love for each other. The ones that can be domesticated even feel love for creatures from another species! The material difference between humans and animals is our intelligence. Stuff like "animals don't have consciousness" really just sounds like wishful thinking, since it would really suck if animals DID and we still mercilessly slaughter them lol.

Billy Overlord

I love your excitement and how you already anticipated many of the discussions in this arc

Wallas

while on a personal level i agree with you lol its more efficient as a business tactic to have more variety rather than finishing one series fast.

Danny

can i get a haw yeh in hobby craft

TuiLa4

Honestly after Violet, I really hope filling in the spot with HxH will be a possibility. I've heavily advocated for Ranking of Kings on multiple occasions, but I am willing to wait longer for that if we get more of this. However, that's not up to me, just a suggestion though.

Komikall

21:39 (of lm reaction vid) they suggested that the queen has "traces of human blood within her".

Komikall

NANA is literally my favourite anime and manga ever and it's easily the best shojo/josei (manga catered towards women) ever for me. I think the girls will absolutely love it because of how strong the character work is there and because they would be able to relate to women in their early 20's. I know they'll be frustrated with many character but also love them because of how realistic and complex they are. Overall, if they ever watch NANA I will actually ascend to a new realm. Another josei I want them to cover is Rakugo. Actual masterpiece

bondbond53

So this episode all but confirms that the queen is how she is because whatever ant gave birth to her consumed a human. That's also why the first ants she gave birth to were so big, because she already had a tiny amount of human DNA to mix with the fish/bats/crabs she was eating. The talk about the desert enviroment potentially mutating them was just conjecture in the previous episode.

Kya Colosseum

I think they would love it. I can imagine them spending more than half of the time yelling at the screen though lol

Adrian

Always happy when I see you post a new HxH episode reaction. I remember watching the Chimera Ant arc 10 years ago, I just started college. Waiting 1 week for each new episode was such hell lol

Adrian

A question for the anime fans: would the girls be a fan of Nana? They said before that they'd like more female driven shows, and IRL friends of mine love it, but would it be there cup of tea?
