2023-11-10 03:55:48 +0000 UTCi like the ending montage of s4 so much... even though wire is definitely about the city and its social structures (and sometimes can be even seen as preachy with social democratic pov), at the moments like this it transcends. reminding us that no matter how messed up and unfair life can be, there are personal lessons to be learned for everybody. ultimately it only matters if you are strong enough to adapt & survive - we see randy realizing he has to toughen up in a group home, prezbo seeing that he can't save dukie and that he has to follow principal advice so the job won't break him, bunny deciding to save one child good instead of meaningless fight against the whole system, etc. if there is a victory and salvation, it can only be personal and the song fits so good

There's a great video called "The Wire Cast Reunion April 27, 2020" where it's all the kids from season 4 and their parents in a Zoom call. The video was done at the beginning of the pandemic and it's just really cool to see all the kids (including several small characters) all now grown up and reflecting on the show and their experiences.

2023-11-09 09:05:39 +0000 UTCThe scene in the montage at the end where Carver talks to a group of really young kids at the same spot where our kids hung out, and then glances at the wall and sees “Fayette Mafia Crew 4 evah” with all their names also on the wall… That moment is a complete gut punch; it really illustrates the futility and cyclic nature of things - a new batch of youngsters who are innocently playing (like our kids were in episode 1) but who will most likely be broken by the system of poverty, neglect and disadvantage that they all face 😐

2023-11-09 00:03:09 +0000 UTCI'd argue season 2 is most divisive amongst fans but with the benefit of hindsight and rewatches I think most people realized season 2 deserved more praise than it initially got (me included), the consensus on season 5 has not changed much over time IIRC, now it would probably be the lowest rated season. That's not to say it's not good tv, IMO it just does not reach the incredibly high bar the previous seasons set.
