I have changed my vision of “what’s possible” again. I grew up on the Richard Scarry books. Anthrpomorphic Animals of all kinds lived in an idyllic, Switzerland inspired world. He started illustrating these in a more belabored, fleshed out, classic Golden Book approach but by the 70s he had developed a loose, cartoony inking style with watercolors. There are pickle barrels, pickle cars & everything in between. I really like this idea of all these different animals living together but being tied together in trying to make this Busy City operate. This world doesn’t involve the grit that so many of us are overly familiar with in life. This is a simplified cartoon world of animals for children. I ask, why is this not a good basis for a society? Most people would appreciate it, most people could do it & most people would thrive under such a way of living. So much of a realistic view of life is about looking at patterns & assuming behavior based on those observations. This is not the way that creative things are born. I’m not advocating for a polly-annaish naivety, but rather a goal of a smooth running, pleasant society. Step into my time machine, let’s go back to when early humans were just trying to survive, huddling around fire in caves, trying to avoid the large, predatory mammals that wandered the earth. Huge hairy beasts with sharp teeth, massive horns & rippling muscles. Then picture Milan is in 1963. That’s a big contrast, imagine how much cool Italians cared about the make of their shoes. The caveman couldn’t comprehend that, let alone know what a shoe is.
