I am a natural at both & they have been intertwined in my life since I started to understand myself & the role I played in the world. It took me a while to make peace with the fact that I am a hustler. I had to come at it via the rapper E-40 & the idea of selling tapes out of your trunk when the business wouldn’t return your calls. I’ve been writing since I was eleven, it always just seemed like part of the self-expression package. As long & as much as I’ve been writing, I never considered myself a writer, never took any classes or even gave it extra thought. Marketing was the same for me. I’ve been entrepreneurial since 1986 when I used to sell Garbage Pail Kids cards & MUSCLE toys to the kids at school, this eventually grew into selling my zines, then running an online shop. Again, this just seemed like something you do if you make stuff, you have to figure out how to sell it to people. The combination that has always worked for me is I like something, other people like it, I reproduce it in some way. There are lots of nuances obviously, sometimes I have to make things that other people really don’t care about or understand, also I’ve got my prime directive of edutainment (thanks PBS). I’ve found that people come around eventually to where I’m at & it’s frequently that I’m just really early on things & people aren’t ready to even think about jumping on the bandwagon. The best thing about this is I actually stick with things these days whereas the cycles used to be as short as a couple weeks. DUNGEON DEGENERATES only seems to grow in my mind, it just gets deeper & more interesting to me.
