LGR - Best Classic PC Game Cover Art [Pt. 3]

Comments

Oh yeah, I really wanted to make a game cover or get into game art back then. I still think it'd be neat, although WAY out of the realm of my current life goals :)

LGR

Definitely had to use it as the thumbnail, I love that one

LGR

Likewise, although my Babbages was under the Software Etc moniker! I still wanna get some shelves like they had and do my best to recreate the look and feel of those stores :)

LGR

It's a shame the Gas Guzzlers Extreme box sucks! http://imgur.com/aS4C10H

Gerald is the man, I'd love an entire computer game based on his art.

LGR

Same here, Max Payne was a revelation to me. Really showed what you could expect over the next few years in gaming with third-person shooters

LGR

We've talked about doing Myst together for the longest time!

LGR

I really hope you do that!

LGR

Heh. Of COURSE it's a ball tree.

LGR

It very much sets the stage for the game's art and atmosphere, yeah. Love that box.

LGR

Never noticed that!

LGR

Haha, it's pretty amusing if you don't realize that's the name of a magazine :D

That Riven cover mildly triggered my trypophobia (fear of small holes in clusters or irregular patterns)... and when looking up said word, because I wasn't 100% sure about the spelling, Google decided to show a bunch of horrible pictures that made me cringe in absolute horror and scroll VERY QUICKLY down... THANKS GOOGLE. ...But anyways, on a lighter note, when you were in graphic design, did you ever aspire to one day make a cover for a game? Do you still want to? haha :D

Lindsay Michelle

The box art for Riven is probably one of my absolute favorites.

John Kinsman

my vote goes to Sidewinder

mavrick

I always remember looking at the pc game selection in Babbages at the mall and thinking about all these awesome looking games that I would never own. Those were the days.

Justin Dotson

MegaRace seems an oddity, but I've spent so much time with Gas Guzzlers Extreme lately it makes me want a boxed version with similarly inspired art. Man!

Abuse is such a great experience, love it. Never knew there was such a cool looking box-art for it though, nice! And yes, Mageslayer, totally. Would have never bought that gem if it wasn't for the interesting cover and I'm glad that I did. Thanks, Gerald :)

Marnix

Max Payne blew my mind back in the day. I just couldn't put it down. Nice edition with the mousepad.

iCach0

ohh and Sacrifice.. Great great game, so glad you want to do a cover of it !

Banjo Guy Ollie

We seriously need an LGR Plays (and beats) Riven. I love that entire series, and I would love to see you play it, maybe with PUR. :) Also, that box for Sidewinder looks straight out of Psygnosis.

Zem Hysong

oh man I got to do a speedpaint of that Riven box. thanks for reminding me :)

Banjo Guy Ollie

These are a lot of fun to watch too. And it's a balltree. Balls.

Zabe

Riven is one of the ones where the box is is indicative of how good the in-game art is. For YEARS after playing Riven, I was using screenshots from it as wallpapers. Especially the coastal scenes with the turquoise water and the weird tribal kinda architecture built over it. Loved it! Great video man! :D

RetroSwim

My favorite little touch from the Max Payne box: The mousepad is actually slightly different! on the cover the warning tape says "Do not cross/NYPD" but on the cover, it's "Do not cross/A man with nothing to lose". Neat touch (even if it might just be an earlier revision of the art or something)

Foone Turing

"Oh my God. This game is awesome!" - Game Fan That is so generic, Lol.

Marksider89

These are some of my favorites to make, so I'm glad to hear it! And yeah, as an art-inclined dude myself, I always find it strange to see so many companies not crediting these folks. I love finding new art and browsing more of the artist's work, but it's tough with a lot of these old games.

LGR

YESS, I love these, probably my favorite videos of yours... And as an artist myself, kudos for how you always take the time to find out who created the box art and credit them by name-- that shows a lot of respect, and not everyone would bother (ie: half the companies in the video, unfortunately...).
