Buckle up, shit's about to get real. I had a lot of trouble trying to think of what to do for this one. A pirate's map? Nah, I can't really relate to that. I hate maps. I have always had trouble following maps, and I'm really glad that GPS is a thing now.
The only thing that kept flooding my mind whenever I tried to think of what to draw for this prompt was the map that was given to me in 2nd grade. It was the beginning of the school year (I think?) and I had always taken the bus to school. Then suddenly I became a foster child, and I was tasked with walking home from school to my new house. I remember my teacher going over the map with me, because I was so anxious about it.
The bell rang, and I went out through the back exit of the school, clinging to the map. I didn't get far before I was lost. I was a kid who was afraid of everything, and stranger danger was big. I remember standing at an intersection having no idea what to. No one was around. Then all of a sudden, my brother appeared (he's a lot older), and he took me to the house. There was my foster mother in the front yard in a lawn chair waving a flag, and the yard was covered in flags. I always felt like she was so disappointed in me, because I couldn't get there on my own, and I didn't deserve that welcome. That was the last time I ever felt welcomed there.
So this isn't a great drawing or anything, but it's a representation of that map and that day.
