Stay frosty! ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

Oh my goodness I loved this movieeee!! What a crazy good action movie, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Scary aliens vs. badass Ripley and I loved every minute!! ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

** Note: I watched the Director's Cut! **

*Note 2: Some have noted issues with syncing on this one and suggested playing my reaction at -0.042 speed to keep in sync! Thank you to everyone giving suggestions below ๐Ÿ‘

Some people have noted issues with movie going out of sync and suggested fixing this by adjusting my reaction video speed to -0.04 speed

Thanks for hanging out and watching with me :)

Aliens (1986) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Would love to see you react to last yearโ€™s Alien: Romulus. It takes place between the first and second Alien films. But would also be down for you continuing with the others in the franchise.

Simon

"She can't die she's the main character," yeah like Marion Crane right?

Rob Nichols

Did you know that Amanda Ripley is the main character in the Alien:Isolation video game. Her mission is to find out what happened to her mother on the Nostromo.

MrDannySteele

agreed. I was able to convert to 25 fps and it's good. I cannot count home many times I've watch this. First time, it was my first R rated in theaters, went with my dad (cherish that memory). Both versions are perfection, I would have liked Jen to react to both and get thoughts on what SE added. I listen to this soundtrack a couple times a year, GREAT.

J M

@JayWantsACat I get where you're going with that, but as other movies go to show eventually, the company was founded by a man that demonstrated the negative traits detailed above, so it makes sense the company could be considered to be an entity that has continued to reward those same traits, a corporate culture that would influence the actions of its employees, like Burke.

Thomas Yanez

Owe you're absolutely right I did use that word incorrectly.

Daryl

Asking completely out of curiosity, what do you see as being subversive about his including the power loader reference? I don't see how he is targeting any institution, dogma or political stance, or in any way shining a light on some important issue or cause. It is just Eddie being silly, as Eddie often does amidst his other actually subversive material. Commentary on the British royalty, religion, alternative lifestyles - sure, plenty of opportunity for subversion. Darth Vader in the canteen or the power loader? Not so much. Now, on the other hand, since he often inserts the silly in the middle of the subtly serious, you could say he is subverting expectation, but that is not the same as subversive comedy.

Thomas Yanez

It syncs perfectly with a PAL (25 FPS) version, so that is what she was using.

Thomas Yanez

No, it has nothing to do with copyright. If you get a PAL release, which runs at 25 FPS, it will sync perfectly. She used a PAL version (25 FPS instead of NTSC's 23.976 FPS), that's all.

Thomas Yanez

For people coming late, regarding Jen's reference to a sync issue, there is another alternative - get your hands on a PAL edition (25 FPS instead of NTSC 23.976 FPS) and it will sync perfectly for the entire run. She probably watched it off a DVD gifted by a non-North American fan. That is how reactors usually end up rendering their videos with the embedded image at PAL framerates, but who knows. Point is, if you can get a PAL version, it will sync perfectly without the manual adjustments that will still occasionally be required even if you offset the playback rate per Jen's suggestion. If you don't have access to your video's metadata, you can also determine if you have a syncable version by the runtime. The PAL Special Edition (what she is calling "Director's Cut") has a runtime of 02:28:01-ish, compared to the NTSC's 02:34:27-ish.

Thomas Yanez

As was already indicated, Joss didn't direct. The story was changed after Joss was brought on the project and had presented a script treatment based on what he'd been hired to write originally, and then the ending he did write was also changed from what Joss intended. Finally, let this quote sink in: โ€œThere is always going to be a shitty Alien movie out there,โ€ he said to Total Film in 2013. โ€œA shitty Alien movie with my name on it.โ€

Thomas Yanez

i just subbed to her Patreon and this is the first reaction I'm watching and I'm also having the same problem. I've seen this issue on a number of other watch alongs so it isn't just Jen's channel. I feel like this is another way the copyright affects streaming the movie.

Aww ya what a shame. Legendary composer

Jen M

Your video runs about 4.5% faster than my system. Unfortunately, my player only lets me adjust in full 1% increments, so it requires adjustments as it plays. Not a big problem, although because much of this movie is dark, it's hard to see where the playback is at on the small, blurred screen.

David Martin

If you look up James Horner in Wikipedia, you will probably be astonished at the number of good and great films he wrote the score for. It seems like every time I watch a movie I really like, from the 1980s through to the 2010s, James Horner wrote the score. James Horner died in 2015, at the relatively young age of 61, certainly for a composer who probably had decades still inside him.

David Martin

I got good results with a playback speed of 0.958 (ever so slightly slower at -0.042) because it still played a little too fast for me. Kept good sync for over 90 min.

Ron

I set my playback speed to 1.04x in VLC and that seems to keep them in sync (or close enough).

Alexis

Whedon wrote it but it was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Amรฉlie, ...) and he's the reason why the movie feels so... strange... (to be fair, it's straight up normal if you compare with some of his other works).

Alexis

Oh thanks for that tip Daryl. Not sure what happened with the sync but I'll try to be more mindful of it for future ๐Ÿ‘

Jen M

Lollll Vader in the canteen ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Jen M

Oh, and as some had said, I did notice that the sync was out of pace on this one. But it wasn't an issue. I just played your reaction at -0.04 speed which mostly compensated for the differing frame rates. I have to do this from time to time over multiple channels. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Daryl

This is still as awesome as the first time I saw it! Still a night time watch! But I started this one earlier to make sure I made through. I like Alien well enough, but I do have to admit the pacing doesn't work as well for me as Aliens. I'm a child of the 80's and the comparable films from these two decades and film makers; one lends itself to my preferred style more than the other. What's interesting to me, from a film analysis stand point. A lot the films from these two very different decades are quite indicative and reflective of the world at those times, much as you'd expect them to be. Just the simple comparison of the supporting characters in these two films. With the more flashly 80's, in this sequal, we do have these larger than life, quippy one liner sorts of characters. It's like the 80's became the decade that began to produce that trend of the more quotable movie moments. "Get away from her you Bi@tch!" Every time I've watched this film in recent years. I've always remembered a bit of standup by the comedian Eddie Izzard. In which he obscurely works in 'a bit' when acts out the sequence of Ripley in the Power Loader. Such is his subverting improvisational style. He also does this bizarre enactment of Darth Vader in the Death Star canteen, now I come to think about it. ๐Ÿคฃ Ahhhh brain tangent! ๐Ÿ˜† Anyways, great reaction as always. ๐Ÿ˜

Daryl

Sorry guys! Does adjusting the playback speed on either the reaction or the movie help at all?

Jen M

I had the same problem with this film specifically. No problems at all with the "Firefly" reactions or her "The Princess Bride" reaction. Doesn't seem to be any difference tied to TV or movie reactions. Also no problems with any of her "Back to the Future" reactions. Just this one in particular.

Miles E Coburn

Thanks Justin!! So glad you liked it as much as I did! What a great movie ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ‘

Jen M

I have the same problem because I live in the United Kingdom. Movies play at a faster rate in Canada, the USA, Japan and South Korea than they do in the rest of the world. It also depends on how you watch (stream, DVD or Blu-Ray/4K UHD).

Lee Pitman

I never watched this movie and was great to watch along! Felt the same stress you were going through..lol! Awesome reaction Jen! Looking forward to the next one! Appreciate the great vibes!

Justin Terry

Sorry to hear that! Can u adjust the playback speed on either the reaction or the movie so they match up better?

Jen M

Is anyone else finding the reaction video goes just slightly faster than the movie itself? Every time I sync up, Jen's reaction inches ahead again.

Michael G. Munz

Burke is indicative of Weyland-Yutani and it's immorality. So, yes, he is the true villain both literally and figuratively. The corporation is a commentary on corporate and personal greed, power, money, etc. in general as represented by Burke. Nobody forced Burke to be the POS he is and to put himself and the corporation above all else. Hence, he's the true villain. Weyland-Yutani isn't a person nor an all encompassing force that directly affects the franchise's protagonists. They are the avenue and resource through which shitty people are enabled to do shitty things that both benefit themselves and them. So, to me, saying Weyland-Yutano is the 'real' villain is like basically saying greed, evil, or power is the true villain. Like, no sh*t. You can't get much broader of an interpretation than those generalizations. So, to me, it's how people handle and/or utilize those traits. People are the true villains. Hell is other people.

JayWantsACat

There is a deleted scene in which Ripley finds Burke alive but cocooned while searching for Newt and she gives him a gun for him to end his misery

Rick Trujillo

True true! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Can't believe they didn't listen to Ripley!!!

Jen M

Oh my gosh Ripley in that machine was AMAZINGGGG!! ๐Ÿ˜† I'm excited to see the Terminators for sure, they are on the watchlist ๐Ÿ‘ LOL Paul Reiser's Mom!!! Too funny!!! ๐Ÿคฃ

Jen M

I mean, no, Burks was definitely the worst. The low-key *real* villain of the Aliens franchise isn't the Aliens, it's the corporation - Weyland-Yutani - because they're willing to throw away human lives in pursuit of money. In both movies, that's what happens, and it wasn't an accident or a coincidence: that was a deliberate writing choice.

Eric

Yay! Such a great movie. Everyone has the same reaction when Ripley comes in in the Powerloader. Just one of the great badass moments in movie history. Aliens is a brilliant sequel, and unfortunately the (very) high water mark for the series. There are other movies, but they don't rate anywhere near this or the original, sadly. James Cameron wrote and directed this one, he also made the first two Terminator movies, Titanic and Avatar - so the man knows his stuff. Also, Paul Reiser's own mother was very upset with his character in this movie :D

crawlie

I know how much you enjoyed Firefly so you might like the style of that flick. I remember working at the movie theater when that film came out and having to go to work on Thanksgiving (American -I sometimes celebrate Canada Thanksgiving as well) and being pretty drunk because my grandfather kept having me wine taste. Fun times

Ed Dunn

OH I didn't know that, that's cool ๐Ÿ‘

Jen M

So Alien Resurrection (the 4th one) was written and directed by Joss Weadon (Firefly, Serenity, Avengers) so it has that quirky fun feel to it

Ed Dunn

Ya for sure!!

Jen M

Oh I didn't know there were more, does Sigourney return for them all or recast?

Jen M

Oh I didn't know she was nominated for this, that's awesome! She's soooo cool man, she's a real icon as Ripley ๐Ÿ‘ I really enjoyed these, much more than I expected! So scary but such a fun ride ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

Jen M

Thanks Matt! You're right, these movies are so perfectly paired together! I loved the action in this one and it probably wouldn't have had the same punch if the first movie hadn't been such a slow burn for sure. Really had a blast watching this one! ๐Ÿ˜†

Jen M

Awesome reaction and amazing cosplay!! The Alien and Aliens as a sequel may be one of my favorite movie + sequel out there. Alien, was strictly a horror movie, while Aliens is an action thriller. BUT it sets the movie up with the audience expectation of a slow burn horror so the built in tension is already there. The juxtaposition of the action after the horror plays so well together and really just makes for an awesome pairing that I will always love an rewatch from time to time. Thanks for an awesome reaction & I look forward to an awesome week of releases!!

MattN

It's sooo awesome!!!!

Jen M

I loveddd itttt ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

Jen M

Lets GO!! I am so excited for this reaction!!!
