Poll: Continue True Detective?

We're approaching the end of season 1 of True Detective!

I know they are stand alone seasons so just wondering if you guys want to see me continue on with other seasons or switch to another show/miniseries?

If you'd like to see a different show, leave suggestions below! Keep in mind I will probably stick to shows with shorter seasons for now 👍

Yeah, the series ending. First time that saying 'goodbye' to a character felt so personal and utterly bittersweet, Her telling us we can no longer follow and should to let her go....basically mirrors her letting us go knowing that we'll both finally be okay without each other. Sorry I keep talking about this show. And, fuck yeah, Alabama Shakes.

JayWantsACat

I've never in my life waved at a tv character like they could see me except for Fleabag in the final moment of season 2 💔 It's such a special show. Plus I love Alabama Shakes.

Jen M

The Boys is pretty great.

JayWantsACat

I wouldnt say I'm nearly as broken as Fleabag but I felt SEEN. It killed me with laughter and pain. It's funny because I've never thought about it until you mentioned it but, yeah, I'd like to gesture at the show and have someone who enjoyed and really understood and they'd turn and go "fucking brilliant." Thank you for being one of those people.

JayWantsACat

Oh yes this is just for Patreon. After I finish Firefly on YouTube channel I will be sticking to movies there for a while 👍

Jen M

Reacting to series is definitely a tough call, because you tie up a *lot* of uploads and work time spent on that one thing that probably doesn't appeal to your entire audience. Especially while building your channel and youtube presence, you might be best off focusing on short-form content like movies and 1-season shows. Just my two cents!

Dr Who will be on the TV poll! 👍

Jen M

Lots of good ones. Taking all suggestions & a poll will be up soon 👍

Jen M

Chernobyl (1 season / 5 episodes) Luther (5 seasons / 20 episodes) The Act (1season / 8 episodes) The Fall (3season / 17 episodes) The Night Of (1season / 8 episodes) Unbelievable (1season / 8 episodes) Utopia - UK version (2 seasons / 12 episodes)

Years back Phoebe Waller-Bridge was on that ever specluative list to play the next Doctor at one point. I watched some of Fleabag, I could see that casting working given the right writer.

Daryl

I do want to see Brooklyn 99 but sticking to stuff with shorter seasons for now, but I'll add The Boys to the poll 👍

Jen M

Not sure what you have seen or not but ‘The Boys’ and ‘Dexter’ are a great watch. And for comedy I am a big Brooklyn nine nine fan. Look forward to watching whatever you pick next!

It's actually one of my all time favs as well! Brilliant show. I cried SO MUCH at the end of season 2 and all I wanted was to find SOMEONE who had seen it so we could talk about it lol. Wish I could say I haven't seen so I could react to it here but glad there's another who loves it as much as I do!

Jen M

I know you need to essentially react to generally popular films and shows for the YT algorithm and audience and whatnot. But my suggestion is Fleabag (on Amazon Prime) even if you don't react to it. It's dark, ridiculously smart and funny, adult, insanely well written, and heartbreaking as all hell. Its one of my all time fave shows ever. its only two seasons of six 30 minute episodes each. Not that awards matter much but it's won a ton and it absolutely deserved every accolade. The trailers don't so it justice but it's essentially our broken protagonist trying to navigate life, love, family, and tragedy. It's a laugher and a crier, at least to me.

JayWantsACat

Ohh good one 👍

Jen M

Thanks Eric! New show poll will be coming soon 👍

I've mentioned before but I'll do so again: "Life" and "Keen Eddie" are two of my favorite shows. (Top 5, easily.) And both are relatively short (2 seasons for "Life", 13 eps for "Keen Eddie") so it's not a massive time commitment. BUT neither are popular enough, I'd bet, to gain any traction whatsoever for a react. Bummer. (I'm gonna keep mentioning them though; I'm hoping my fellow patrons will surprise me and chime in that they also loved... either one. Or both.) "Andy Barker, PI" is like 6 episodes; nobody has ever heard of it and intellectually I understand it'll never make a react, but in my heart I hold out hope; it's such a short time commitment, and it's *so* funny. Andy Richter plays Andy Barker, an insurance salesman who moves to a new office, previously owned by a P.I., and a potential client hires him thinking he's the previous occupant. "Psych" probably could; it's a VERY funny show, and Shawn and Gus are one of the best friendship duos in tv history. But it's a pretty big time commitment at 8 seasons (and the final 2ish, while still good, are noticeably not at the same level as the first 6ish, IMO). I'd enjoy a "Psych" react, for sure, but I'd expect you to pass on it given how long it is and also there's no real hook: it's very fun and funny, but it's not, like... "prestige" tv, it's not a beloved cult classic (kind of though? But it was popular enough during its run that "cult" doesn't really apply...) BUT of my favorite tv shows that might actually have a chance, in no particular order... 1 - Farscape: an excellent sci-fi show; my favorite, actually. It isn't quite as polished and slick as Firefly, I don't think it grabs you right away the way Firefly does - I mean, for me it did, and for others it did, but Firefly was more broadly appealing, I think; it was designed in a way that worked really well at getting new viewers to care about the characters. Farscape's setup kind of keeps the non-POV characters at arm's length for a bit longer; the crew has to build a dynamic, a relationship, over time whereas the Firefly crew is fully formed when you, the viewer, arrive. And so it takes something like the first half of season 1 telling mostly stand-alone stories while slowly revealing the characters to its audience and to each other. And the writers are world building. I think the first half of season 1 is good, don't get me wrong, but it really picks up momentum later in the season and *really* hits its stride. 2 - Ted Lasso - wholesome, heart-warming, funny. Great characters, great relationships... EXCELLENT writing. There are essentially no characters that don't have depth. 3 - Veronica Mars A really satisfying, and kinda sneaky heart-warming (at times, at least), show about a girl detective. I don't know how much to reveal about even the backstory because the show paces its story and character development so well; the first episode brings you into a story in progress and slowly fills in the backstory, so anything I say about it can be considered... if not a spoiler, at least spoiler-adjacent. Veronica is tough and smart but she's not perfect; she's got a chip on her shoulder, she's cynical. Her flaws are understandable, but my point is that the show is not merely escapist pulp, there's depth to the characters. (Nothing wrong with escapist pulp, but... at least for react purposes, I'd think a tv show ought to be better than that; there are enough movies like that if we want to have a good time, no reason to devote that much time to a tv show that doesn't offer more, I think. Again, for react purposes.)

Eric

Ya I'm sure I'll check out the other seasons of True Detective on my own if not here 👍

Jen M

I hope we do watch the others at some point, or at least you do alone. Even though I like Season 2 and 3 more than a lot of people seem to, I'd still be the first to admit that they can't really shine next to Season 1. It'd be better to give them their own space. And I'd advocate for Deadwood. Another show cut short sadly, but at least we got three seasons (and a movie).

Also the Netflix Marvel shows are short and make for good reactions. I'm particularly fond of Daredevil.

Absolute0

Are yes you're right, my instincts said that didn't look right 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

Daryl

Ohh true yes! 👍

Jen M

The Midnight Manager or The Night Manager? The one with Tom Hiddleston? That one looks great!

Jen M

I've always thought Orphan Black would make for an excellent reaction. Plus it's Canadian!🇨🇦🇨🇦

Absolute0

These are all mini series. •The Midnight Manager •Des •Dopesick •Dr. Death
